What can I use to sweeten my porridge (Quaker Oats)? I have this for breakfast most mornings (if not every morning) and I have to add sugar otherwise I can't eat it 6.gif

I tried adding mixed nuts which I snack on, but still had to add sugar as it was tasteless.

Apart from sugars already in food and fruit, I only add sugar to my porridge as I don't drink tea anymore.

Matryoshka, there's only about 16 calories in a teaspoon of sugar, so unless you have loads of it, chances are just the action of eating and digesting porridge, a slow burn carb, high in fibre, will negate a small amount of sugar.

When I have it, I put in 1 sweetener tablet, and then sprinkle the top with about 1 tsp maximum of ordinary sugar, just so it doesn't get overpowered with the sweetener taste, which I detect because like you, it's the only thing I add sugar to. I also mix my porridge with water and milk, so think my calories are pretty low per portion anyway.

Pleased to say I have another loss this week of 3.5lbs. It's not been a difficult week to stay on plan, and I managed to survive a night out with the family and avoided any of the fast food on offer. To be honest it looked pretty rank, so it was easy to resist.

Lots of baking for me again this week, which really tests my willpower... I didn't realise you could make cakes without licking the spoon/bowl, but it is possible. Who knew?

To all losers/STS's no matter how small those losses may be, they're not gains. I used to want to brain the consultant at my SW class when she'd say 'you'll see it on the scales next week' if I'd been good and had no loss to speak of, but 9/10 times she was right.

Beanie, is it SW you do? If so, can you use one of the online support forums/threads to help you, and be accountable for a weekly weigh in? The SW thread on MSE was always very welcoming I found, and lots of useful tips and recipes. When I finish my current plan, SW is the healthy eating plan I intend to adopt to keep me at my target weight, because I know how satisfying it is, whilst keeping my bad carb binges at bay.

Lois, not sure what plan you're doing, but whenever I needed to try to have some excellent losses, it worked if I upped my water intake, and swapped carb foods for fruit/veg, etc. I think on the SW plan they call them speed foods. If 2/3 of the plate is filled with those, the other 1/3 is protein/carb you should see a shift. Just ensure the veg you have is not high in sugars like peas, tomatoes, etc. Fairly commonsense I suppose. I find cabbage, courgettes, leeks, mushrooms, are great for keeping me feeling full, taste lovely with a bit of seasoning, and bulk out a meal just nicely with some lean meat. You could definitely reach a 4lb target in 2 weeks doing that, if not the 5lbs you're after.

Thanks for responding. I don't use sweeteners. I use about 2½ tablespoons of sugar to my large bowl of porridge  so that'll be, by your calculations, almost 100 calories of sugar alone everyday  Isn't that too much?

Honey's good on porridge - you can try the different types to see which you like best.

    Hi all

Fred - thanks for the chart again, and the quote of the week, very apt in my case.

Lissarria - well done for SOTW again. I'm so glad I'm in the same team as you! lol

Sary - thanks for the tips. Tomorrow is shopping day, so I'm going to plan meals that include lots of veggies and less carbs. I'm doing WW by the way. I've got to drink less alcohol too. :o

Matryoshka - you could try adding dried fruit to your porridge and a little honey. I haven't tried it myself, but people on WW recommend putting sliced banana in when it's cooked.

    Catch you later.

I need to lose some weight before my Daughter gets married on 18th May:eek: I just cannot get my dress done all the way up. I need some advice please. I thought low carb but what do I eat. At the moment I have been on a diet for 2 weeks and not lost an ounce, but I think it's because I don't know what I'm doing. Not eating chocs or greasy foods but chicken etc. Please advise me if you can. I see lots of you have lost weight:A so feel I am asking in the right place.
    Thanks

Congratulations mother-of-the-bride :T Someone will come along soon to give advice as I don't diet. I simply try to eat right and exercise daily.

Thanks for the advice everybody re: the honey in the porridge. I'll give it a try tomorrow morning and feedback :j
