how can the coop justify a small trifle at 99 pence when the same thing with an asda label on it is 34 pence
they are as dear as marks and spencers but no where near the quality
ive said before on other threads that the coop move into a village like mine decimate the other small traders and lets be honest dam lazy shoppers who dont price check and do all their shopping in their most nights on the way home from work and because of this the coop keep putting their prices up because most people dont care

its rumoured we might get a tesco soon, oh how i cant wait, proper competition

i must add im one of the forum members whos trying to not use the big supermarkets this year and i am also eating out of the freezer and cupboards challenge on another thread

had a day off work today and went to a large town outdoor market bought 6lbs of scraping potatoes 2 onions and 3 large carrots for £2.65,try doing that in the coop
i spent in total including coffee from poundland and milk from morrisons etc etc £19 all the stuff i purchased would have cost nearer £30 if i had coop shopped

i would just like to finish by apologising to Azari for any punctuation mistakes but have my ceremonial scabbard at my side just in case

Curries red Cola - that takes me back. I didn't know they were still in business.

Owned by Dunns nowadays apparently, bought up a few of the older local soft drinks companies.

My local coop is expensive but they are good for their reductions and they do have good offers.

Staff in my coop are ok and friendly enough although one member of staff informed me and a colleague once that she would be vacating the till after serving me to visit the bathroom because she had eaten too much fruit

If there's a residential area a reasonable distance away from a supermarket or city center, you can be sure there will be a co-op about. I've always found them to be in quite convenient places if your not particularly close to other amneties - I guess alot of the time your paying for that privelege

For Christ's sake it's CENTRE. This is not America.
  • I live 2 minutes walk from a Coop (formerly Somerfields). Their pices are extortionate.
My other half and I now take a taxi to an out-of-town Tescos and back (total £25) when we do our big fortnightly shop, and we are still saving large amounts of money over what we spent in the Coop.
And don't get me started on their so called 'offers'. I've seen items on 1/2 price sale still significantly more expensive then the none sale prices of Tesco or Asdas.
People in our town are praying for the day they close down and hopefully get replaced by a 'proper' supermarket not a so called convenience store.

A lot of people in this thread seem to be failing to compare like with like.

Most Co-op's are situated in high streets and are more reasonably compared to Tesco Metro and Sainsburys Local than the big out of town places.

Smaller, high street, supermarkets are bound to be more expensive than their out of town counterparts because the overheads are so much higher. And the fact that there are OOT equivalents means a lot of people only use them for buying the odd item - the bulk of their shopping is done elsewhere - which means that these large overheads are exacerbated by a lower turnover.

So you are paying a big premium for convenience.

It doesn't really matter where the various Co-Ops are located; they're still extortionate compared with Tesco Metros etc.

As has been mentioned already, their prices are comparable with M & S or Waitrose, but nowhere near the quality.

Yes, my Co-op is in the Hight Street and it is right next door to an Iceland store. I can get 4pts milk in Iceland for £1. The same thing next door in the Co-op is about £1.60. They don't seem to venture outside their own premises and see what other shops are selling things at. They advertise things at half-price and I can still go next door and buy the thing cheaper. If that is the case, then they have to have some added value to attract customers. One way might be to have plenty of staff on duty but they don't which was my original vent.

The Whisky sold in my Co Op is on average £3.00 dearer than in the off license/general store around the corner..
  • My local co-op is absolutely brilliant. They regularly publish vouchers in our local community magazine, evening paper and occasionaly print them out from the till for as much as £6 off of a £30 spend. They also have a great reduced to clear section unlike Tescos and Asda who seem to be putting out less and less these days, or its being snapped up as soon as it goes out.

Combined together the vouchers and reduced to clear save me a fortune.
    We can't find you now
But they're gonna get the money back somehow
    And when you finally disappear
We'll just say that you were never here
