Help! My grandmother is 75 years old and has high blood pressure. She is travelling to USA to visit family for first time next month. She's booked to go for 2 weeks and the cheapest insurance quote she could get was £400 which seem a bit excessive. Can you advise where she can go for cheaper deals?

    Many thanks.

I was successfully operated on for breast cancer 5yrs ago last May. I have Type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure and, worst of all (it seems) I will be 66 next month. My previous insurers, e-sure, would not consider insurance of anyone over 65. I found the same ban with many other insurance companies. It left me feeling old and depressed until I looked on Martin's page of insurance for over 65's. I have now got annual world-wide insurance (excluding previous medical conditions and without skiing (!) for £59.40 from netcoverdirect. Their letter said "old" is no longer in our vocabulary - new Silver Surfer trip policy covers ages 65 - 75 years young. Annual multi-trip cover at standard rates up to 69 years. Thank you, thank you Martin! You've taken years off me!

My husband's mother would like to spend Christmas and New Year with her daughter and son-in-law in Florida. Virgin have been exceptional in fulfilling her requirements flight-wise, but when it comes to travel insurance she is really in trouble. Unfortunately she has pre-existing conditions: Chronic Leukemia, angina and diabetes. However, 'tis not as bad as it looks as all these conditions are being successfully treated, she is mentally competent and able to keep on top of her meds - at 70 with all these conditions, she is really doing well.

The cheapest insurance she has been quoted is 9k!!!!

We're taking Martin's advice and phoning the companies on his list. Does anyone else have any advice and experience on this subject? Thanks.

  • Thanks for that Information Dinahmyte. I have filled in their on-line form and will just have to wait to see if they will cover her at all. Like you say, it is downright depressing for her to get turned down all the time, especially since she is managing her conditions so well. I'll keep you posted.
  • Mum-in-law is now all kitted out (except for pre-existing conditions). We went with netcoverdirect and she was insured within the hour.

I've been trying to obtain an annual policy for my mother-in-law to visit family in S.Africa for a month. She's 71 and on 3 different blood pressure medications which is not classed as "mild and controlled". Tried most mentioned on here but premiums coming in around the 400 mark. Anyone else had the same trouble. Don't really want to consider single trip as she also wants to visit family in USA at a later date.

Can anyone advise my mum. She says that she has heard that it is nigh on impossible to get travel insurance now she has had mastectomy and radio therapy.

Does anyone have any experience in trying to do so?

    Thank you

it is difficult, and can be v expensive if you can find it. Online you can try https://www.allcleartravel.co.uk , but they can be v dear for any type of cancer, but they may let you exclude it.

Offline you could call MediQuote on 01243 534435.

    Good luck.

    HTH.
