  • I did wonder about Avon. I will probably stick with the one I am used to.

    Thanks for that Jeannieblue.

    No...............

I am not putting Avon down - I just don't know if they are pure minerals or not. Their mineral make up could be the best for all I know!!

    Right, that's it - I'm going shopping...

(edit)...aaaaaand I've ordered the brush which Unity recommended :) It sounds very good quality, and although it's not as pretty as the EB ones, I would rather spend as little as possible until I know I get on with mineral cosmetics.

Now I just need to buy some actual make-up! I've emailed EB to see whether they think the various products I have in mind will be right for my skin, and what else they might recommend.

By the way, what's the actual definition of a kabuki brush?

The Kabuki brush is Japanese and comes from the make-up worn in Kabuki theatre, if you are interested, here's a link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabuki

The brush from Iona cosmetics is quite stiff when you first get it, and is better after a wash with shampoo and a little conditioner. So far I haven't had it shed any hairs, and even the Bare Escentuals Kabuki does that - despite being quite expensive.

I finally ordered some samples from Elemental Beauty on all your recommendations. Have to agree that the lady there is lovely and very helpful. Unfortunately although I love the 'feel' the colours are a bit yellow on me - even the barley.
Also I seem to have a strange problem with my nose looking like a strawberry - does anyone have any suggestions for how to prevent that? I'm sure I saw a post about pore minimising cream but can't for the life of me find it.

I'm a bit of a makeup junkie so I didn't really need to get new stuff as I already have foundation from two places on ebay that I've not seen mentioned here before:
I got a kit several years ago from face-value-cosmetics in the US which was extremely good value. You can get both light and medium foundation in a clever little two layer sifter jar so you can mix and alter as you get paler or darker. The colour suits me well and I quite like the feel but with all the talk about what's in different formulations I'm curious about how 'pure' it is. The one bad thing I got from them was a brush you can put powder in the stem of - seemed a fantastic idea for taking out but nasty nasty brush texture made me itch. Has anyone found one that's worth trying?

The other place is Minerals will work 4 U (which I think is Irish from memory). They have the colour that works best for me when I'm pale- light neutral - as well as some lovely colours of multipurpose minerals and great red lipgloss. Also my favourite brush - a kabuki with a long handle but it is £12. This seller gives the contents of the makeup and says all have only mineral in and they do a 5set sample pack for £10. For those of you I saw in earlier posts having problems with EB being yellow this place might be worth a go, although I think they are more expensive.

I've got the day off so I think I might go shopping and wash all the brushes now!

I've just ordered samples from EB as well. Nicola was very helpful, she says my skin tone sounds very similar to hers, and on that basis she recommended English Rose for preference plus Nude, Barley and Blush to try out different blends. (I hadn't even noticed Blush on the site, cos it's at the bottom of Page 2 after all the dark ones). I've also ordered one sample of each finishing powder and an eyeshadow/concealer brush, and Nicola has offered to supply small samples of two concealers (Colour Corrector and Fairly Light) free of charge :T Total cost inc VAT and 1st Class recorded delivery, £13.13.

I had some trouble with the website yesterday - after entering all my address details it was giving me an error message when I tried to proceed to payment - but it worked this morning.

Incidentally, does anybody know why it is that (in this country at least) mineral makeup is such a "new" thing? Bare Escentuals has been around over 30 years and it would seem that Lily Lolo has been popular in the USA for a while, but it seems to be only in the past year that it's come to prominence in the UK, and only since then that the high-street cosmetic brands have started doing their versions.

Why the sudden craze? I'd never heard of the stuff a few months ago.

    I have no idea...

But it could be due to QVC. I get up early for work and have to have a couple of mugs of tea to get me vaguely awake and I have flicked onto the shopping channels......... saw Sheer cover - my skin at the time was horrendous, acne, eczema and weeping (oh god, can't believe it now...).

For me, that is where it started... this site and investigations, Sheer cover never suited me - I passed it and Lily lolo which made me itch, on to my sister, so it wasn't wasted. I then (can't remember how), heard about allantoin, and then someone on here said that EB has it in its foundation.... etc etc...

Exactly why we haven't had it over here before is a mystery - I thought it was new - ish.

I think that QVC has made it popular.. and this site!

I tried mineral foundation today for the first time and I'm really impressed - the finish looks so professional. Are the other products - eye make up, lipstick etc as good?

I got a Bare Escentuals lip gloss as part of a kit, but it's nothing special, much the same as most other cheapie lip glosses.

The Bare Escentual eye shadows I found quite hard to get a good colour build up. Lilly Lolo seem a little more highly pigmented. I much prefer Elemental Beauty, but the trick is to apply the powders on top of crayon type cream shadow as it gives them something to adhere to. I find if you sort of stipple the powder on (the same action you'd use if you were stencilling ;)) rather than stroking - it sticks better and doesn't go all over your cheeks.
