Unfortunately, things do go missing in the post. It could be stuck in the bottom of a mail bag that's not been emptied properly or anything. Found one in a mail bag (because i was conscientious) that was dated 11 months earlier.

However, I have to agree with custardly here. Tickets should not be sent in any other way apart from Special Delivery.
Am I entitled to compensation with Recorded Signed For™?
For compensation on services used with Recorded Signed For™ please read more about compensation.

Cash and jewellery are not covered under this service. For more valuable items (e.g. cash, jewellery, tickets and vouchers) please use Special Delivery™ Next Day or Special Delivery™ 9.00am.

You can ask for a Recorded Signed For™ fee refund if we are unable to provide proof of delivery.

So yes, although 1st class normally gets there in 1-2 days, things do go astray. With all the changes going on in RM at the moment, I'm surprised that more things don't go missing.

There's a clear misunderstanding in this thread...

op did NOT pay for a premium service, op paid for the STANDARD 1st service and asked for a signature to be obtained at the other end. Nothing premium about this

    Hi all

I just need to let off some steam :mad::mad::mad:.

Booked some train tickets for DD1 to come home from uni for a few days and as I booked them on my card had to collect them from my local station (or pay £6 delivery!!!). I sent them FIRST CLASS recorded last Thursday and they haven't turned up and there is nothing Royal Mail can do other than apologise that they aren't there 4 delivery days after posting.

I was told I should have sent it Guaranteed delivery (at a cost of over a fiver) if I wanted to it to arrive !!!! When I asked about the 'contract' I had entered into buying first class postage I was told that as a customer who hands money over to Royal Mail I don't have a contract with them as they are exempt from the Sale of Goods Act (unless you send Guaranteed next day - oh which you cannot complain about until 10 days after it should have arrived if it doesn't)

So having had a good moan I am now off to purchase - at almost double the cost - another ticket to get DD home tomorrow :(

Rather than all the "should RM deliver in 1/2/3/4 days / at all" issues, doesn't the bit in bold form the key to the rant / vent?

So, what does the OP want under the Sale of Goods Act? Their £1.20 back - well that would be scant recompense for their loss.
    £1.20 wouldn't stop a rant / vent.

So, I'd suggest the OP would prefer that their consequential loss was addressed; But that is not a part of the Sale of Goods act.

    well done
now wipe that vasaline off the lens
people werent interested when postal staff were telling you the service would decline
they didnt care as staff levels have been cut by tens of thousands
they didnt see the issue as later start times were introduced
they malign RM,its staff etc for being resistant to change
then when things change they harp back to how things were
oh,BTW 2pm. that would be the end of an 8 hour shift on a 6am start
    so wheres the issue?

Actually, people did care about these things happening but how exactly were we meant to stop them from happening? Like many people, I didn't want the postal service to get worse than it already was, but sadly it did. Did we all not cross our fingers and care hard enough or something?

well I can only go on the opinions I see/saw
even on this forum it was the same when the workers/CWU(though im no CWU fan) raised issues
people were quick to malign the staff as the problem
the introduction of later starts was the funniest.so many folks counldnt see the problem
now all they do now is moan about getting mail 'late'

Actually the bit about the Sale of Goods Act (which I thought covered goods and services) was a genuine question as to why Royal Mail were exempt.

Don' want any money back, know that the items weren't insured, just miffed that I was let down by Royal Mail - end of :D

As I said Amanda, unfortunately it happens. Has your daughter actually checked (wherever) that there is no mail there for her. It's quite common (although it shouldn't happen) for recorded deliveries not to be signed for.

And although this is a vent thread, and you've quite rightly had your vent, I hope that others learn from this and use the appropriate service when using services from RM and other couriers.

  • In response to some comments regarding poor old posties not being able to get mail delivered ad quick as they used to. Clearly they cannot offer the service they used to but STILL state different on their site. Theyre offering a service they can't luve up to, the very least they should do is correct the site!

I think they do live up to it. The figures, although not 100% on this, were something in the high 90 (s)% that 1st class mail is delivered within the deadlines.

Practical thought... If the item has still not been delivered (no signature) and after 3 weeks RM declare it lost - does Amanda65 get to reclaim a) the Signed For fee b) the value of the contents or c) both. Mazza111 quotes the RM above - it says cash and jewellery not covered but tickets and vouchers "please use" Special Delivery. So that suggests that she can claim for the tickets up to the max of £46 (100x 1st class). The ticket might be worth more - but at least it's something.

If it turns up late - then there's probably no comeback. If it turns out to have been stuck in the hall porter's desk for days - maybe a complaint to them is in order.
I need to think of something new here...
