Clearly they cannot offer the service they used to but STILL state different on their site. Theyre offering a service they can't luve up to, the very least they should do is correct the site!

Practical thought... If the item has still not been delivered (no signature) and after 3 weeks RM declare it lost - does Amanda65 get to reclaim a) the Signed For fee b) the value of the contents or c) both. Mazza111 quotes the RM above - it says cash and jewellery not covered but tickets and vouchers "please use" Special Delivery. So that suggests that she can claim for the tickets up to the max of £46 (100x 1st class). The ticket might be worth more - but at least it's something.
If it turns up late - then there's probably no comeback. If it turns out to have been stuck in the hall porter's desk for days - maybe a complaint to them is in order.
all of this is on the RM site

There's a clear misunderstanding in this thread...op did NOT pay for a premium service, op paid for the STANDARD 1st service and asked for a signature to be obtained at the other end. Nothing premium about this
I think you need to learn what a 'premium service' is.
Where you have two services and one, a more expensive one, is an enhancement of the other, the one with the enhancement is a 'premium' service and the difference in cost is the 'premium'.
This is pretty basic stuff and you really shouldn't need it explained to you. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Yes. By you.

however, neither of those services guarantee a delivery period.
a more relevant analogy is own brand,vs brand name vs premium product0 -

I wasn't talking about guarantees.
I was just correcting arcon's ignorance about what 'premium' means.
We all know the facts in this case.
RM f**ked up but, because of special treatment under the consumer protection laws they are not legally liable. (And this is quite sensible since if they were the cost of first class would have to rise to pay for the inevitable glitches that will occur running a service of this size.)
The OP merely wanted to vent on a vent forum but the usual suspects insist on blathering on about the legal intricacies which were never the point. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

The OPs opening statements referred to expecting next day delivery from 1st class.

You must be looking at a different lot of "opening statements" to me then as I can't see any mention of them stating they expected next day delivery.
All they mentioned was that their mail hadn't arrived 4 days after posting.Booked some train tickets for DD1 to come home from uni for a few days and as I booked them on my card had to collect them from my local station (or pay £6 delivery!!!). I sent them FIRST CLASS recorded last Thursday and they haven't turned up and there is nothing Royal Mail can do other than apologise that they aren't there 4 delivery days after posting.
I was told I should have sent it Guaranteed delivery (at a cost of over a fiver) if I wanted to it to arrive !!!! When I asked about the 'contract' I had entered into buying first class postage I was told that as a customer who hands money over to Royal Mail I don't have a contract with them as they are exempt from the Sale of Goods Act (unless you send Guaranteed next day - oh which you cannot complain about until 10 days after it should have arrived if it doesn't)
So having had a good moan I am now off to purchase - at almost double the cost - another ticket to get DD home tomorrow0 -

ah,its a nice try Hermione ,and I know you do like to try
The important part was that little 's' at the endWhoa - a bit harsh! Particularly liking the YOU in bold and underlined
I don't think at any point I have said I expect compensation - what I did expect when posting something first class was for it to have arrived the next day! Not unreasonable I don't think.
I have to say I don't often come on this Board - perhaps I'll stick to the ones I usually use where people are a bit more supportive.0 -
The OPs opening statements referred to expecting next day delivery from 1st class.
Indeed.
And that is quite fair.
RM say they aim to deliver first class the next day and if someone says they are aiming to do something on a certain day it's reasonable to expect that they will do so.
It's not, of course, reasonable to expect them to guarantee to do so unless they actually state that the make a guarantee.
I think the mistake a lot of people make in situations like these is to assume that because RM usually delivers first class mail the next day that if it doesn't come the next day it will come the day after.
i.e. if they deliver 19/20 items next day they will deliver 19/20 of those they don't the day after, etc. This would mean that the chances of something not arriving after 5 days would be minuscule.
However, in reality, I have found that if a first class letter does not come the next day after posting there is a good chance that it will be delayed by several days rather than just one. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Must say I've found the complete opposite, that when it doesn't arrive the day I expect it, it does arrive the day after. And that's usually due to sender not getting it in the box on time4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0
