Not sure about specific foods, but I do find that if I eat lunch, and it doesnt matter what I have, within 20 mins I'm struggling to keep my eyes open!

Me too, actually after I've eaten lunch and dinner I have real problems keeping my eyes open.

I have no health problems as I know of, slim and reasonably fit.

I often wonder why I feel really sleepy to the point of having to sleep after I've eaten?

Merlot - It has something to do with the way your body processes the sugar in the carbs and releases Dopamine whilst it does it!
If you ate virtually no carbs, so maybe a leafy salad, no fruit (like tomatoes!!) no pulses but maybe a bit of lean meat, you will probably feel different. The body deals with protein in a very different way. I had the same problem as you, (in fact cheese on toast was practically an instant sleeping tablet for me :o) but when I stop the carbs I get "normal" again.

Not easy to stick to, mind you

I know i should eat better, drink more water and less booze, exercise, loose weight etc etc but i feel so tired i just want to sit on the sofa on an evening and i inevitably fall asleep in front of the telly. sad huh? i feel dull and stupid, look ill when i want to look and feel fab and have bags of energy. So does anyone want to join me on a quest to feel better and have more energy??
I think this is in part habit. If you did some exercise - nothing strenuous, just an hour's walk in the evening after work - you would instantly feel better and sleep better at night too.

I too have an underactive thyroid - 225mg daily and 3 anti depressants a day (thats another story). I find that when I eat mostly protein I feel much much brighter - however carbs (even good ones) are my comfort food! Off to drs to get results of blood test today - always makes me nervous if they even talk about messing with my tablets. hunt around for a doctor - some doctors only treat the blood test results - others will also look at your symptoms. Those are gold dust - find one and stay with it. Tiredness, constiptation, dry skin, forgetfullness are among the symptoms and I have all of those!!

When OH was in the army and we were in Cyprus one of the military doctors told me that the meds can have an effect on your bone density - so perhaps calcium tablets - or ask your doc for a bone density scan. Have also heard that some leafy veg isn't good for thyroid sufferers, but haven't paid that much notice myself.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.
  • I do know that with an UAT we should avoid soy products, cant remember why tho (forgetfulness another symptom!!)

Finding a dr on the nhs which doesn't just look at the numbers is almost impossible, I found a private specialist in the end 4 years ago and now my gp knows not to argue numbers with me lol

On a negative, I slept right thru my alarm this morning didnt wake til 8.40 and hadnt even made the kids lunch boxes! Inevitably poor kids were late for school :( and I'm still tired! And feeling like a bad mummy!!

Going to try just having protein for lunch today, will have bacon and poached eggs and see if that makes a difference, never have breakfast, dont tend to eat much at all actually but still overweight :(

  • Another TATTer here. I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis which leaves me [STRIKE]tired [/STRIKE]shattered and both conditions are only eased by heavy duty meds. These meds suppress the arthritis enough to keep me mobile, though achey and skin clear but leave me wiped some days (one of them is a lose dose chemo I take once a week) so I am always struggling against fatigue.

I too fine minimising carbs helps, though not always easy to do.
I also find great benefit with a daily pint of green smoothie (lots on line about green smoothies). These are basically a green leafy veg smoothie sweetend with fruit to make it not just palatble but very yummy.
These are so healthy, it is a great way to easily up your green leafy veg rate which is very good for your overall health.
Does wonders for my skin too (I mean my 'normal' skin, not psoriasis) - the number of people who tell me how well I look when I have a run of them after an unintentional break...)

    A green smoothie recipe
    Add to a blender:
    • 200ml unsweetened fruit juice; even better is fresh fruit (or 1-2 bananas + cup or two of water)(personally I self juice 3-4 carrots and 2 apples and an inch fresh ginger, but I have a very high quality juicer)
    • add two handfuls of washed raw spinach leaves
    • Blend
    • Drink
You can also add 1/2 a small ripe avocado - makes it sooo creamy.
    I also add flax seeds.

Play around with the quanities til you get a drink that tastes lovely to you - this should be delicious, not a punishment, lol.

I have a very high quality blender, so I also vary the spinach with pak choi, kale or cabbage and a whole variety of green leaves)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

I agree with the tired after food thing but I did Atkins strictly for a couple of years and didnt notice any difference but as I said fruit really does seem to help, thanks for the smoothie recipe Brighton belle, I'm going to give that a go, the iron tablets are starting to make me feel sick, I actually just had to force down a bagel (which I love) so not good so far.
Thank you for this site Martin

I feel like eating all the time too. I'm fairly convinced it is at in least in part my body's response to the fatigue: I'm excessivly tired and my body is assuming I need to eat. I'm a stone overweight and am desparately trying to curb my appetite at the mo.
