ADAM Blair.... The guy who slaggs off GPS detectors..

    www.beatthespeedtraps.com

Why don’t I sell ‘GPS’ detectors?

Simply, because they are less effective and (much) more expensive. They are effective but you have to pay a monthly subscription fee. And if a new speed camera is installed before you do the monthly update or the Police set up a mobile unit, you will not have this information in the systems database, making it less than 100% reliable.

My BTST Laser / Radar Detectors are 100% reliable because they work by picking up the ‘radar scatter’ of fixed and mobile devices AND you don’t have to pay any subscription fee to keep them up-to-date. What’s more, they are cheaper
to buy in the first place! It’s a no-brainer, really.

BTW he also sells GPS speed cam detectors

  • Totally out of the blue, this is what has been sent to me from Talex :
After working some seriously long hours over the past few days,
our technical bods (headed up by Umair) have got the Talex
Speed Camera Updates working so you can now download the
latest Speed Camera database to your Talex.

The current database is a slightly improved version of what we
bought from Embedded Technology (the previous owners of Talex).

However, in the next 28 days we will begin our "speed camera
domination" plan, the aim being to:

    1) have EVERY SINGLE Speed Camera and known Mobile Speed
Trap site in the UK in the database

    ...and

    2) remove the old "possible mobile speed trap" sites that are
    no longer relevant

So if you already have an active subscription you are going to
notice big improvements over the next 90 days and beyond in
    to the future.

If your subscription has expired then I seriously recommend
that you renew it NOW, by going to --

    * http://www.talex.co.uk/UpdateMyTalex

We are investing a substantial amount of money in the database
in the coming months and ongoing in to the future but I am
NOT increasing the price so you are going to get some serious
    value here.

What I want to do is make sure that you never get a Speeding
Ticket ever again, and that you are so impressed with your
little Talex that you tell anyone who will listen about how
    great it is!

Happy driving, and thanks for your patience during the takeover,

    All the best,

    Adam Blair
    Founder, Talex Technology Ltd

P.S. in case you haven't already got the Talex software
installed on your computer (you should have, unless you have
changed computers since getting your Talex), you can get it at
    http://www.talex.co.uk/downloadarea/default.asp

The address to go to to renew your Speed Camera Database
    subscription is... http://www.talex.co.uk/UpdateMyTalex

    Cheers, Adam

It's looking good for the future even though they are charging for the updates. I could not see how they could run the business without charging :)

I bet no one takes out 3 years though :)

I have a talex lite and a subscription for the next 18 months
I telephoned talex 2 days ago as i have lost my password. i was told that he did not have the database in front of him but he would ring me back later.
    no call was received.
I rang again 10 minutes ago and when i got through a message played saying the memory was full!!
    does not inspire confidence

All registered users got that mail by the look of it. Before you get too optimistic bear in mind the new talex has nothing to do with the old talex and Adam Blair in his other companies sold this
    http://www.speedcameralocator.com/promo/
which I've seen posts by owners saying it did not pick up cameras that their 4 month out of date Evesham sat nav picked up at the same time. So much for his puff about 100% accurate database for that company!

Also see scooters post above. Blair also sells laser detectors and in those adverts slags off gps detectors like talex as no being good!

I suspect that with laser detectors becomming illegal he has had to change his tune to maintain profits, and saw the talex name as a good buy because a lot of uninformed customers will not know about the change of ownership and he can trade on the old talex database reputation and reviews etc.

I shall certainly not be giving subscription money to new talex because don't trust them based on the history and posts of people who knew Blair's old companies well, selling useless "how to get out of speeding ticket" books etc for inflated prices etc, so am leery of these claims about best database in the country etc. Certainly on PocketGPS world where they have thousands of spotters mailing in to their database, they regard Blair and his claims as a joke.

Sorry to pour cold water on the party :o
  • Yes, that's the email I got too and I've written to Adam Blair asking him who/what/why/how questions!

I took out a longer than one year sub (would need to check back what I paid for) from the old Talex. haven't tried updating anything yet as I'm not sure what to do, keeping an eye on this and my email for answers from the new Talex and Novus.

I suspect that Adam Blair is getting inundated with emails questioning what is going on. Not surprising after all the customers were emailed by Novus informing of free updates for life, then next emailed by Talex asking for subscription renewals.
I too emailed him, but then later that day found this thread and learnt the full story.

Oh dear, just when it looked like some good news....

I've not had a reply to my email about yesterday about problems updating my device, and when you ring the number you either get engaged tone, or a BT answer phone, similar to the one you have in the house, which says message memory full.

Guess he's not running the business from a fully staffed office...

If I didnt have an active subscription I deffo would not be even thinking of giving him any more money, until it becomes clearer whats happening.

Wonder how many people have signed up and paid the money since the website came back up a day or so ago..nice little earner for him!

On reflection, I might apply for the job he's advertising....

    http://www.adamblair.com/appointments.html

At least it also lists another number for him there....

    "Aims" cannot always be met.

Oh and this Adam Bliar guy doesn't believe in qualifications. Does this mean he's a bit dim? Oops, suspect he's reading this thread. Hi Adam!

But I suppose most of the businesses in the UK reflect that you don't have to be the brightest of the bunch to make money.

on the new talex page, the first retailer prominently displayed is halfords:

    http://www.talex.co.uk/

so it is interesting to read halfords own faq page about talex

    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_catalogId_10151_storeId_10001_partNumber_ST_SAFETYCAM_langId_-1

    quote:

    Talex Safety Camera Detectors:

There have recently been some concern about the ongoing availability of camera updates for the Talex Lite device, since the supplier, Embedded Technology Ltd, have gone into receivership.

This situation will actually benefit many people with future camera database updates. If you already have the Talex 'update kit', with the required Talex to USB lead, you are able to obtain lifetime updates from Novus Systems, who are now maintaining the camera database, free of charge. Update Kits can also be purchased directly from Novus Systems.

To get the new updates you need to download the new update utility from NovusGPS. Carrying out updates from the existing Talex Utility will result in the database being replaced with the same data over and over again, and not receiving any new information.

Novus systems are available to support customers on 0845 659 0959

    unquote.

not quite in agreement with adam's emails then...
