I don't believe you came back with an answer?

There are quite a few answers the op is avoiding if you ask me. Seems to be trying to see this as a one sidedway of getting his hands on a car regardless of whether or not its legal.

No, "anybody cannot use askmid". To use askmid you have to confirm that you have a legitimate reason to ask for the information:
    askMID wrote:
I am entitled to the insurance information about the vehicle detailed above for one or more of the following reasons: It is either registered/ owned/ insured by me or my employer; I am permitted to drive it; I am an Insurance Broker or agent and acting on behalf of my client.

I understand it is an offence to wrongfully obtain information of this nature without any of the above reasonable causes. If I fail to provide true reasons for acquiring this information I may be committing an offence of unlawfully obtaining data contrary to section 55 of the Data protection Act 1998. I declare that the information provided will not be used for any purposes unrelated to this enquiry.

Askmid claims that the DPA is in force. Seeing as the DPA isn't actually in breach for the public that use it (IE there are no personal details given out) they're on a bit of a weak leg.
  • Ok lock me up for using askmid in the past.

I've seen people quote this a lot on here, but I only ever want to see the v5 in the sellers name.
When you buy your cars, what proof of ownership do you ask to see, before you pay. I can't think of any apart from the v5.
(or anyone else that does it for that matter, who doesn't just accept the v5)
You can ask for the bill of sale from when the seller bought it, but that proves nothing, they can knock that up on word, and then it still doesn't prove it was legally owned when they bought it.

I only buy from reputable main dealers so the issue never arises for proof of ownership.

But, if I were to buy privately, I would look at the full history, bills, MOTs, etc. etc. to show what has happened in the car's past, and I would do a car check using someone like the AA service to get extra piece of mind.

But, each to their own, if you are willing to just use the V5C then fair enough, I admit the risks are fairly low since the majority of cars are registered to the owner, I believe.

    Hello everyone

Before I start, I swear I didn't know this before yesterday evening.

I deliberately called the vehicle a Landrover and didn't give the location because, if it really was abandoned, I was worried about others trying to do what I was trying to do. It is in fact a 1993 Toyota Landcruiser 80 series, in London.

It isn't stolen. It isn't a ringer. It isn't abandoned. I won't be reporting it to the police or DVLA. And I won't be trying to claim it.

I was surprised that it hadn't been taxed since 2009 but there is a very good reason why it hasn't been busted for all that time. Its been on an overland trip!

When I came back from my own trip in 2008, various people contacted me for advice about overlanding and one of them came and saw me 2 or 3 times and bought some stuff from me in late 2008. He then went from not having a car at all to passing his test, buying his LC (which I never saw at the time), driving it across Europe and into Algeria for the start of his trip all in the space of a month (!) I did follow his trip for a while but had't looked at his site for some time - the last time he contacted me was way back last year when he'd reached Alaska and wanted to sell his vehicle, so wanted the text from the ad I had placed to sell my own vehicle.

I was stung by the comments from trickywicky about the vehicle being possibly a ringer if it was listed as untaxed since 2009, and that I should get the police to examine it before sending the V62 off to DVLA. Equally I didn't want to do that as I knew they would simply tell the council/DVLA it was untaxed and it would get taken away. So, just in case there was any mention of this numberplate on any of the Landcruiser websites (like those for Landrovers) I googled it and I am glad I did, for a story came up about it getting towed by the police in India - they thought it was the car of a Pakistan spy!

Now it all makes sense. Looking again at the overlander's website shows that sure enough, he didn't sell the vehicle in the USA but shipped it back to the UK. It was complete news to me that he has moved into a house at the end of my road - or has sold the car to someone who does live there - and I have emailed him for a chat.

In any case, the vehicle was (finally) gone when I came home yesterday evening.

    Thankyou and good night!
