Abandoned Landrover?

  • Well - I was either wrong about the 2 being owned by the same person or the owner didn't want to play, for yesterday evening the 2nd one was gone and I didn't hear from him.

Also heard from the police this AM that the one I'm interested in 'has no issues' meaning it's not stolen, although they did confirm the road tax has expired.

Unsure where to go from here

I would dearly love to do that, but DVLA only give that info out if you can show just cause, no?

The police should now be taking action (or informing DVLA) to fine the registered keeper for no tax whilst on a public road, since they are now aware of it, shouldn't they ?

I know you can do it, but I don't remember how. Try a bit more Googling.

Well, if it had turned out to be stolen I would have told them where it was.

But as it wasn't I didn't tell them and the reason I didn't do that is that a) if the owner in fact hasn't abandoned it but has merely lost his job / gone on holiday etc then I don't want the vehicle and have no interest in dropping him in it and b) if it IS abandoned then any attempt by me to get my hands on it isn't going to be helped by it suddenly ending up clamped or towed away!

I suspect the keeper will already have had a fine in the post for the road tax in any case.

Did you just give the police the registration over the phone for them to check? - IF so then (as mentioned previously) they could be false plates. The police would need to physically inspect the vehicle (with a lot of cars the glass is etched and the VIN number is under the windscreen in front of the dashboard).

This still sounds a bit dodgy to me.

I'd leave it for a while.

If the russian maf!a have come back to collect "their" property ready to be crated up and shipped away now they're sure there's no tracker on it, they might not be impressed if it's moved into your garage.
  • I have had a VERY interesting chat with DVLA -I called them to try and get from the horse's mouth how to take over an abandoned vehicle. In the process of doing so, I gave them the reg no and they said it HADN'T BEEN TAXED SINCE 2009!!

They tell me I am advised to confirm no objection from the police (I have semi-done that already but nothing in writing) and council and then send off a form V62 to apply for the registration to be transferred into my name. I will need to write ABANDONED VEHICLE where it asks for the VIN no. They will try and contact the keeper and then if the keeper doesn't respond within X number of weeks I will get the V5 in my own name -takes 4-6 weeks.

Also that if it does get taken away in the meantime, I can get it released by whoever has taken it (police, council, DVLA) on production of the V5.

I'd go for a ringer, on plates from a vehicle broken in 2009.
Does it look like it's not been used for two years?
