Abandoned Landrover?

I'd be tempted to move it to a 'place of safety' ie your driveway, amd inform the police of your actions.
If there's ever any arguement you can claim to be being a good citizen, and just 'keeping an eye on it'. It the owner does turn up you're obviously going to return it. Remember theft is permanantly depriving the owner of their property0 -

You missed part of the definition of theft. The dishonestly part. Has the op been gdmdpt so far?0 -

is this the actions of an honest person?
It hasn't been reported stolen:.............yet.0 -

Still falls foul of Section 12 of the theft act though12 Taking motor vehicle or other conveyance without authority.
(1)Subject to subsections (5) and (6) below, a person shall be guilty of an offence if, without having the consent of the owner or other lawful authority, he takes any conveyance for his own or another’s use or, knowing that any conveyance has been taken without such authority, drives it or allows himself to be carried in or on it.
..................................
(4)If on the trial of an indictment for theft the jury are not satisfied that the accused committed theft, but it is proved that the accused committed an offence under subsection (1) above, the jury may find him guilty of the offence under subsection (1) and if he is found guilty of it, he shall be liable as he would have been liable under subsection (2) above on summary conviction.0 -
Regardless of the taxation status, it's surely not abandoned if it only appeared in your road 3 weeks ago, that's just parked (albeit illegally).
Some of my fleet are regularly not moved for weeks at a time, but if I found you had stolen it, I might be a little upset to say the least.0 -
TrickyWicky wrote: »Did you just give the police the registration over the phone for them to check? - IF so then (as mentioned previously) they could be false plates. The police would need to physically inspect the vehicle (with a lot of cars the glass is etched and the VIN number is under the windscreen in front of the dashboard).
This still sounds a bit dodgy to me.Inspectorlund wrote: »I have had a VERY interesting chat with DVLA -I called them to try and get from the horse's mouth how to take over an abandoned vehicle. In the process of doing so, I gave them the reg no and they said it HADN'T BEEN TAXED SINCE 2009!!
They tell me I am advised to confirm no objection from the police (I have semi-done that already but nothing in writing) and council and then send off a form V62 to apply for the registration to be transferred into my name. I will need to write ABANDONED VEHICLE where it asks for the VIN no. They will try and contact the keeper and then if the keeper doesn't respond within X number of weeks I will get the V5 in my own name -takes 4-6 weeks.
Also that if it does get taken away in the meantime, I can get it released by whoever has taken it (police, council, DVLA) on production of the V5.
Still trying to ignore the obvious then?
Have you or have you not, had the police around to physically examine the vehicle?
The lack of Tax from the DVLA for 3 years rings serious alarm bells about it being a cloned vehicle. You seem to be drooling over the prospect of just getting a free car regardless of its legality. While there are grounds to claim and remove genuinely abandoned vehicles I'm not sure that your motives are taking the genuine part into account at all.
I think you're looking at it thinking £££ regardless of its lawful status if you don't mind me saying so.0 -
Just tell the police about it and see what happens.0

Op - You also need to remember that getting a V5C in your name does NOT make you the legal owner (the V5C actually says in capital letters : "THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP")
I would assume that some other legal document would be needed to claim ownership of an abandoned vehicle (if that is the case)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I've seen people quote this a lot on here, but I only ever want to see the v5 in the sellers name.
When you buy your cars, what proof of ownership do you ask to see, before you pay. I can't think of any apart from the v5.
(or anyone else that does it for that matter, who doesn't just accept the v5)
You can ask for the bill of sale from when the seller bought it, but that proves nothing, they can knock that up on word, and then it still doesn't prove it was legally owned when they bought it.0 -
