I keep getting a box up telling me that I must wait 15 seconds between searches even if I have not done a search for a couple of hours.
That's a long-standing problem but, as I hadn't noticed it lately, I assumed it had been fixed. Obviously not. I would frequently get it even if it was the first search I had done that day.

I think it loads the top of the page first because of the facebook embedded link.
Maybe, but why do you say the Facebook link rather than the Twitter link beside it?

And surely, if that were indeed the case, it would only load to the Facebook link, but it loads right to the top of the page, right to the 'Search MSE...' box, 'Home' link, 'Forum' link etc.

Oh, yes, I've got it! It's Martin's picture! We are forced to look at Martin's picture each time the page loads, it's all so obvious now.

It could be the twitter link as well and it is probably more likely as Martin seems to be obsessed with twits these days,

I get the impression that the established forum is on its way out, the long time users don't click on enough of the affiliate links to pay for its upkeep so all the stops are being pulled to get new members as they will be the ones that click the links and pay the wages.

I have not read the whole thread, so apologies if this glitch has been mentioned. It is only a very minor glitch and is not something I would class as essential.

When I post into a thread, lets say I am nearing the bottom post on a page in a thread, the refresh glitch would be my post will find itself on the next page, ergo I will not see my post appear until I physically go to the next page (if that makes sense).

Its only a minor glitch, but as with all glitches, a domino effect can lead them to snowball into chaos.

  • Hi all,

Recently we have had a few reports of the Twitter and Facebook share buttons being slow to load in Internet Explorer. I was able to replicate these problems myself. The buttons have been removed for the time being and replaced with simpler, faster ones which will not slow down Internet Explorer. I hope that helps.

No, that hasn't affected it, it can't have been the buttons.

I reckon it's something to do with the righthand column of links. I'm presently using the 'recommended' version and, if I click on 'most recent post' of a thread (for example), the thread appears, starting at the very top of the page as already mentioned, and showing the posts stretching across into the righthand column, which shows no content at that point.

Then the page is 'redrawn' (so to speak) with the correct post showing at the top at the same time as the content of the righthand column appears. The actual width of the 'white space' area doesn't change, but the posts shrink to their normal size and the RH column pops into place.

This process takes around a second or two each time.

If anything the forum is even slower today with up to 15 seconds between pagas loading, going back is worst and I have noticed that the page is waiting on the 'travelmoney' widgit while loading a few times.

Using this forum is becoming a joke, it is difficult to navigate round and for the time it takes for pages to load, it spoils any enjoyment I used to get from it.

    ETA

Some of the longest waits that I have for a page to open is when reading a thread and I try to open a previous page of the same thread ie. click on page number, it can take up to 20 seconds to load.

Im not having any speed issues, unless it has already been fixed for you it could be something grinding your computer. ;)

For speed issues - switch off and unplug router. Leave it well and truly alone for several minutes for the router to update and then switch it on. The router sometimes needs updating, specially when there are changes to servers, browsers and sites. I was once advised of this by my clever internet provider and it aways works.

I only ever have problems speed wise with this site and only since the recent changes, I have no problems anywhere else on the internet.
MSE Joe did some tests using info I gave him about my browser and such and gave me a set of figures back that did not correspond with my own experience (his figures were slower for the other sites and faster for this one) He then left me with a parting line that it was my browser that was to fault but as it had not changed, I dont know how he arrived at that solution.

I use a fixed line cable so there is no router to switch off.

I can have another browser open doing stuff at normal speed at the same time as I am using this site at snails pace.
