The people i got him from had been giving him monthly worming tables but the vet yesterday said to forget thos and just use the treatment on the back of the next for both, which i gave him yesterday, think it was called advocate or something like that? Well i gave him his first treatment yesterday so he shouldnt have worms.

Advocate won't treat all worms at all,my vet uses practic for fleas, tics etc and millibax ( i think it is) as a wormer -my boy wolfs it down thinking it's a treat!

They may say they did but he may not have taken it or given they didn't seem great anyway.....

Given he's been off with food and when he ate he threw it back up worms are a possibility

  • Okay thanks i will look into that about the worms then, i hope he hasnt got them. How will i know if he has? Will he act differently, will i be able to see them when he goes to the toilet?

Just been having a look at puppy pens, these seem like a better idea, think i will need to get one with a top on though otherwise he will just jump out. The most he will ever be on his own for will be four hours and this will only be 3 times a week, so would it be acceptable to leave him in there then?

A puppy pen with a top is a crate ;)

Maybe the crate you have is a little small, which would explain your concern, but as the others have said, he'll probably spend most of his time asleep anyway!

Edit - just to say though that if you get something that is a bit big, it won't help with the toilet training as he'll just go in another area where he won't be sleeping!

Haha yeah i guess it is! :o

I just thought if it was a bit bigger then there would be more room to play! The one i have seen is a soft one so it doesnt look like a cage, although knowing him he'll chew through it ;)

You could well see them when he goes toilet and it's not a nice sight! They can be pretty big and may even wriggle a bit:eek:

Should be ok,he may take time to get used to being on his own though and howl himself to sleep

What kind of sides does the soft one have?Beagles are brilliant climbers so be aware of that

I don't think a fabric one would hold up well with a puppy. I wouldn't worry about it looking like a cage, in the dog's POV anyway - a dog doesn't understand the concept of a cage or have any negative connotations to being "caged in" - they see it as a four poster bed, as such, with bars instead of fancy curtains! Infact, if you don't like the aesthetics of a crate, you can buy fabric covers for them (just mind puppy doesn't pull them through the bars and chew them, I've heard a couple of horror stories of dogs pulling blankets in through the bars and getting limbs wrapped up and caught between the fabric and the bars)

Puppy pens do have the bonus of being adjustable in size, if you get one with lots of panels (or some have the option to add more panels) then you can start with a small square and enlarge the area once he has more control of his bladder. It's a personal choice, I didn't use crates at all, just babygates to confine puppy to a more mop-able room!

  • Have you decided what to call this little darling? I think he needs a name other than 'puppy'! Unless I've missed it?

It's a shame that he's had such a uncertain start to life but I'm sure he'll settle in nicely and forget these weirdos. If they do start contacting you again, tell them he's been neutered. Maybe that'll stop them once they know they can't make any money off breeding him. Or can dog vasectomies be reversed?

    Good luck!

Dogs are usually castrated rather than vasectomised, the testes are actually removed (vasectomies can be done but don't tend to have the positive benefits that castration can as the hormones remain)
