  • Thanks FLOSS our village Post Office is a teeny one, just a kiosk in the One Stop shop so they have very little by way of space for storage and won't accept a parcel over 2kg in weight which both of these are. No Staples or Ryemans anywhere near BUT we do have a little copy shop/stationery supplier in the village and they may have a roll of brown paper.....at a price, so He Who Knows will try them on his way home from walking that houndicus!
  • Morning all. - actually just noticed it's afternoon. That sums up how hectic things are!

I have news on the job front - I still have one (unlike some colleagues) which is a huge relief however it definitely doesn't feel much like cause for celebration. We have been warned that it's likely we will need to go through a similar exercise of being placed "at risk" every year which is very unpleasant. We were also told if people left of their own accord though that may help ease things - nothing like making you feel wanted. I guess that's the joys of working in banking these days!

That sounds very frustrating re the post office MrsLW - it doesn't take much for a parcel to be over 2kg so it must be really inconvenient for people. Until last year I had 3 post offices nearby - all within Co-op shops however the actual post office part has now been removed, staff made redundant and you simply hand over your mail at the shop counter. Unfortunately the staff training has been shocking - last week I had 8 overseas Christmas cards to send and the assistant stuck first class stamps and "Airmail" stickers on them and was adamant that was how things worked. It took me showing her the Royal Mail website on my phone to convince her (and her manager by this time) that wasn't correct and then she announced that she'd been doing it that way for the last 6 months and nobody else had complained. I wonder how many cards and letters didn't make it to their recipients :(

Our tree is up and some decorations dotted around. We are heading out to our place on the Gulf Coast on 27th so they will be coming down on boxing day. its still very mild up here so doesn't seem like Christmas at all.

Candlelight - I believe the Florida property market is quite positive right now so good news that your Sister has sold her place. I'm sure that will be one less worry for her.

I wrote my UK cards last night so they are now ready to send/deliver where I can. It's shaping up to being a busy week as my mother has gone to New York with my sister for the week so I'm cooking at the farm each night to make sure dad is ok and looked after. Whilst I'm sure he could muddle through on ready meals if he had to I hate the idea of him working all day then coming in to a microwave meal on his own so hubby and I will eat there until mum comes back. I have the meals for the week planned and a mountain of potatoes peeled (dad is a meat and two veg type) so I'm as prepared as can be.

Lainey - thinking of your mum, I'm sure she wants to see as much of you as possible so may not say if the travelling is too much. It's hard to know what to do for the best sometimes.

Hoglet - keep up the cycling efforts. The gym I go to has taken delivery of 25 new spin bikes (at last) which track your distance. It's a real novelty to most of us but I'm so terribly competitive that I may well break my neck soon trying to see the tally of the person next to me :) I'm averaging 15 miles on a 45 minute class which I don't think is too bad however there is always room for improvement!

Working from home today so I'm taking a break whilst having my potato and courgette soup. I needed some more freezer space and I was also reluctant to put the central heating on so the soup is heating me up.

The sun is shining at the moment and reminding me that the windows badly need cleaned. It will have to be done before Christmas or it will be remarked on at Christmas Dinner - I love having big windows as we have a fabulous view but I do wish someone could invent "always clean" glass :)

So, back to work now as I have a mountain of things to tackle - no sign of it slowing down for the holidays just yet.

Being Mrs Impatient I must ask - Fuddle - do you have a "moving in" date yet??
    NO FARMS = NO FOOD
  • Hello all . Haven't read back yet so a few pages to read .
I've had one of the many viruses our doctor says are doing the rounds at the moment . Thankfully we managed the appointments so far , only four to go before the holiday .
I did see SM post above . I'm glad your job is safe for now but not quite what you hoped for is a shame , I don't understand the companies now who create a fear factor around employment nowadays . Surely it is better to employ a workforce that feel valued and aren't in fear of losing their job .
My tree wont go up until 21st ( yule ) which is just as well as I feel as though I've been wading through treacle for the past week or so and need to find some energy .
I hope all are well .

I can't imagine what it's like to have the feeling of impending doom hang over you scottishminnie. Ignorance isn't bliss but sometimes knowing something could happen is worse, over time, than dealing with SHTF - well I think anyway. I'm just sorry it's happening to you sm.

No move in date yet. We're just at the beginning of the searches being carried out and given that the council shuts down for 2 weeks over Christmas I doubt we'll know anything until sometime in January.

I do have other news though. We have accepted an offer on my mam's house. It's not even been on the market for a week yet. It's an investor. He's come in low but acceptable to Sis and I and a huge relief that we could be letting the house go sooner rather than later. Fingers crossed.

I took a bus today. I know  I never venture out of my locality in the week. I had exhausted my charity shops so took a trip further afield to seek some fabric. 1 blouse and 2 more pillow cases later I think I have enough to add to my ebay purchases to finish my quilt. It's a bit disjointed in places but I'm thrilled with it. I've ordered wadding from ebay and bought a single sheet for the back as the cost of fabric per metre makes my eyes cry.

Speaking of which. I've cried on and off all day. I feel ok in myself but I just miss my mam. Not my mam that I often would see but the lady whom she was when she wasn't under the drink.

    I guess I just need a bit of closure. It's coming isn't it? :)
  • Fuds The closure is on it's way . I hope when the present stress is sorted you will be able to remember your mam in a loving way - it will take time but you will find peace . If you have room at the new house a Rosemary in a nice outdoor pot would be a way to remember your mam and dad , you could even sow some forget me nots in spring in the pot and some snowdrops .
So glad all is moving forward with the move and fingers crossed the sale of Mams house goes ahead .
Well done with the patchwork - a bit of wonky makes it homemade !
As Leonard Cohen sang " There is a crack in everything , it's how the light gets in "
    Take care .
    Much love polly xxxx

  • Fuddle, that is so good it didn't take long for your Mum's house to sell.

It is exactly as Floss says, another link in the chain of your Mum's life but such a natural feeling from you. I can remember when we had a buyer for Mum's bungalow. She and Dad bought it new after we had all left home, and now someone else would be living there. I was 60 at the time, so much older than you are now, and it still hit me. It is all part of the grieving process that each of us must go through.

You will be fine little one, and you are allowed to cry any time you want, there are no rules

((HUGS)) fuddle. I remember a character in a book I loved saying "There is no timetable for grief. Grief isn't a train that you catch at the station." and it's very true. Thinking of you xx

Fuddle, that's fantastic news about your mother's house. The market must be quite positive up there.

You give way to tears when you have to, its all healthy and healing. As Ivyleaf says, there's no timetable.
I would do what Pollyanna says and plant something in your new garden that will hold a memory of your mam for you.
I still have the last thing that my mother did for me before the dementia destroyed her for ever. She dug me up a root of her mint. That mint, or its great, great grandchild, goes with me to each new home. It has survived 6 moves so far.
My Dad's cap sits on the newel post at the top of the stairs and I pat it every night when I go to bed.
You will find your own way of celebrating your mam's life and as time goes on you will find that the bad memories fade and it will seem that the real person that was her will be restored to you.

All cards written, just 4 letters to go.
