    Morning all.

Am working from home all this week. Thankful for the wonders of modern technology as it lets me multi task in quiet spells and get some of my "own" things done.

I think I'm reasonably organised now. I have my turkey in the fridge. Going to pick what few Brussels sprouts I managed to grow today and clean them and store them in water until Friday. The reason I'm picking them so early is to work out if my meagre supplies are enough or if I will need to buy some for Christmas Dinner!
I have the two Christmas cakes marzipanned and will ice one today and the other tomorrow. Decorating isn't my strongest skill so it will be lots of snow like royal icing - covers a multitude of sins.
I have finally decided that I will make a Yule log for desert on Christmas Day. Just need to decide on another dessert to give people a choice. I was thinking of either a champagne or mulled wine sorbet as it could be made well in advance. I'll have a trawl through my ice cream recipe book later and see what I can find.
I haven't thought much about starters to be honest. I will make turkey soup howevere not everyone likes soup to begin a fairly big meal so I'll also do something lighter. I may just cheat and buy some salmon parcels from one of the supermarkets.

I had a gift of 2 dozen eggs from a friend yesterday. She h quite a number of hens and one of her regular customers had gone away on holiday unexpectedly leaving her with extra.
She warned me to use them up quite quickly so I will make some bath he's of meringues today to share around. They will store for at least a week in Tupperware boxes which will allow people to keep them until after Christmas Day. I don't know what I will do with all the yolks though. I'm loath not to make something to use them up but it would have to be something which I could then freeze as we have plenty fresh baked things on hand at the moment. Ideas welcome:)

Candlelight- I sneaked a look at FTM's blog. The picture of Flora is adorable, she looks so calm and good natured.

I hope everyone is well and not too busy with preparations for Friday.

  • :xmassign:SM you sound as though you are busy. Are you off to the US in the new year? My sister and BIL are off again in January.

Flora is gentle and good natured. When she first started visiting us she was very timid and was brought to us by a black and white Tom. She always stood back and let him feed first and she had what was left. Of course I got wise to this and then they had a bowl each. Eventually she would spend all day on the sofa and then I would have to turf her out at night. I couldn't have the Tom in because he was more ferrel and hadn't been "done", so he would spray.

When she brought 5 kittens to us we thought it was time that we officially adopted her as obviously she had adopted US. My Dd found homes for the kittens, we had Flora speyed and chipped and now she is a house cat. The Tom lives in a little house, with an igloo inside, in our garden and is fed at least twice a day sometimes more.

Well I think I am already for Christmas. Shopping all done except cat litter, which I forgot so will pop out tomorrow.

If I don't get back on here before Christmas can I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year. On the Daily Thread there has been so many poorlies and people who have lost loved ones, and I send my love and hugs to everyone.

Thanks, I didn't realise custard could be frozen. I'll certainly have a look at this as it would be good to have custard in the freezer for January. We often have soup and a pudding during winter rather than a main meal so that would be ideal.

Candlelight - I'm off to the sunshine state on the 27th all being well. I have mixed feelings about being away as we have lost several close family and friends over the last few months however those close to me are admamant we should go. We will be remembering them while we are away.

  • Hello everyone,

I'm 2 hours away from 2 1/2 weeks of freedom! I just wanted to wish you all a merry Christmas and a very happy 2016.

Lots of love from Hoglet, DH, Socks, Izzy and Alfie xxxx
  • Merry Christmas all:santa2:

I'm relaxing a bit before getting things lined up for lunch (not until 3 so I have plenty time). I've had my first "oh no" moment of the day - I bought what I thought was a pack of 32 pre made pigs in blankets. Turns out to be 8 pigs in blankets and 8 stuffing balls so I now have only 8 tiddly sausages for 6 people (well 5 as I won't have any). I'm hoping as there is so much other food nobody will notice.
Hubby helpfully said that's what I get for cheating and buying ready made pigs in blankets- he's pushing his luck today:D

I made Delias mulled wine sorbet yesterday and it is very tasty, very happy with it so off now to construct the Yule log which I made in my very petty Yule log tin. I'm even going to snip a piece of holly from my own tree once I've donned my wellingtons to splash down through the garden!

    Have a good day all.

  • Wishing you all a very happy, prosperous and contented New Year. It's been a lovely holiday but now I'm itching to get back to normal life and meals. I love the day of Christmas day and Boxing day and New Years Eve and New Years Day but the bits in between drive me distracted! It was so nice to have family home for bits of the time and I shall miss DD1 as she's going home today but getting back to routine and normal menus is much better for the two of us and then it will be Spring again and the growing cycle will start over, life will be 'right' again.

Have yourselves a good day everyone, Lyn xxx.
