Lynn, we're about to light the fire too; it's not cold but a fire is so cheering when it is dank like today.
We're mostly sorted for Christmas food; having lamb which I got from Ocado last week (half price boneless leg) with roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, leeks from the garden, carrots and sprouts. Only need chipolatas, carrots, sprouts and bacon for breakfast on the day so will pop to local farm shop first thing over the weekend.
I finish work on Friday then I'm off until the new year
Been pootling today, not achieved much but gradually tidying up. Labelled 24 bottles of wine and stored those in my bookcaseGot more to bottle tomorrow  we should be alright for several months!
Sounds like everyone is on top of things. Just checked my cards and realised I need cards for mum and dad so will get onto that tomorrow; OH also needs cards for his parents so will get them at the same time0 -
Hi everyone.
I hope everyone is well and looking forward to Christmas.
We have had dreadful weather this weekend. Really awful winds yesterday, and grey and rainy today.
Charlies-Aunt hope you are feeling better and the medication has kicked in again.
MLW, do you think as we get older we yearn for the Christmases we had as children? I still try to make Christmas much as we had as children. obviously we have more money than our parents did, but I don't think it is just down to money. I want my grandchilden to feel secure, love. happiness and all the things we felt as children.
Over the years they have made me the most wonderful cards and decorations, and I was telling Fern and Iris I have a treasure box that I put everything in they have made for me. Periodically I look through it and they always seem amazed I have kept everything - why wouldn't I?
FTM how lovely you are having a party on Wednesday for Fern & Iris. I can remember when we were at primary school we were all asked to take something in for our "breaking up" party. The girls sound as though they have enjoyed making everything for Christmas. The snow globes sound wonderful, what fun they must have had.
We have had a quiet weekend really, no last minute rushing about. I must look for a nice wreath tomorrow to take to the cemetery for Mum and Dad, and I want to cut some greenery from the garden for something for our front door. I don't make a wreath I just gather greenery together, tie it together with some nice ribbon and hang a couple of red baubles from it. It usually looks quite effective.
I made more mince pies and sausage rolls on Friday and they are in the freezer and an apple pie. We have had a slice each of that but I have been very good and cut the rest into slices and frozen them.
Oh by the way had my blood test last Monday so I popped into the Doctors on Thursday and computer says NORMAL no further action. So that means I am back on track with my blood sugar thank goodness. We have both worked really hard on this and Himself has been so good. He is prepared to go without sweet things although he does have a sweet tooth. He is a lovely man and we have been married 46 years(I was a child bride lol) I wasn't really but it sounds good!!
I am watching Polar Express at the moment, I love that film I think the graphics are so clever.
I think that is all my news for this week, will be back next weekend to wish you all a happy Christmas. In the meantime take care and hope the weather improves for us all.
Love

Hi CANDLELIGHT I'm not sure if I want childhood christmases, what I think we lose as we grow up is the innocence that makes the magic and I don't think that can ever be regained. What I enjoy best now is family being together, the familiar routine with them at 35 and 29 still insisting that stockings have to be opened sat on Ma and Pa's bed at silly o'clock on christmas morning, having breakfast and then going for a lovely walk along the river with the dog, having done all the preparations for lunch the day before. We all pitch in and do the cooking and clearing for lunch and then another shorter walk across the common and through the woods before coming home to play silly board games and giggle a lot and light the woodstove and sit in front of it with a cuppa or something stronger for the others. All really low key and simple but giving more pleasure than all the riches of christendom. This will most likely be the last of those years as with baby Ezra arriving in February we will have a new magic in our lives and I suspect that we shall gain far more than we lose in the years to come and change is sometimes a very good thing and to be embraced and not regretted, yes? Hello..again..
MLW i have to ask whats a hoolie..i did chuckle at it?
Kate..yes i did have a smile on my face as Iris explained Jesus was born soo long ago that dinosaurs could have been there..bless her..who am i to argue that point..
Candlelight..i am so glad your blood tests have come back good..well done you on working hard to get it that way and himself..
Unfortunately for children i keep all of the things they make..i love having them out every year..cards from nursery and all the angels and santas they made from loo rolls..they are about falling apart but i treasure everyone..they are given pride of place on the tree or fireplace..
I agree with you lyn..i used to watch my gran cleaning the fireplace out and when i got bigger it became my little job to do..i miss it ..would love to do again
Candlelight your right about wanting to make the children have a christmas like we did when we were younger but it will be hard to do nowadays..its all to commercial,we like just good old fashioned fun and family.. but like you say safe and secure in the love of the family...
O lyn your girls are just like my older ones..even though they are not here they ring at silly o clock in the mornings asking what did santa bring you..its lovely to be honest that they have their own lives but still want to share in the magic of it all..i love it. Baby Ezra is going to bring you all so much joy..its a great thing to be a granny..
love ftmBe who you are, not what the world expects you to be..:smileyhea

Lol! I know this expression! does He Who Knows also use the expression "its the sort of rain that wets yer"? Its our local expression for a fine, steady and unremitting downpour
Had a productive weekend - strained and sugared our HM cassis, raspberry vodka and sloe gin, did two big jars of pickled red cabbage and started off 5 pints of raspberry vinegar. A bit late for Christmas but something tasty to look forward to in the New Year.
DH borrowed power drill from work and we finally managed to get a curtain pole up over the back door and have got a curtain up there tonight. Immediate end to the freezing draught that was blowing in so it was worth the hassle. It is milder here tonight now that the wind has dropped - really hoping that we don't get another severe winter.
We brought a mega jar of pickled gherkins with spices and peppercorns back from holiday this year - very piquant and spicy but sadly nearly empty...seems a crime to waste all that lovely flavoured vinegar - will it keep until next year to pickle HM onions or will it go "orf"?:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls

Lincolnshire lad and Yorkshire lass for parents - brought up in Lincolnshire. Dad was a character and had lots of funny sayings - I think my favourite ones of his must be the one about money

Aww I Love this thread, it is so .... cosy!
I am saying "stuff the marking" (note, not the turkey - I buy a boneless joint prepared by my butcher - no waste that way. Can you have a boneless joint? isn't that a contradiction in terms? :rotfl:) and prioritising the house.
I am extreeeeeemely stressed and the house is the major cause at the moment. Not sure how it's got into such a mess. One room done, another 9 to go  . Though DD can do her own and DS's isn't bad enough to be worth the nagging - a quick dust and hoover will do it.
Also struck lucky today when I wandered into a lesser known department store in our town (a "Dunnes" if anyone knows them) and picked up some bits for OH, a couple of sets of gloves etc for kids stockiings, a table football game for DS and some new underwear for me - great result though the bill was a bit ) I have also relented and got DS a "Call of Duty" game for his Xbox - don't judge me. I always said he couldn't have one as soldiers are being killed all the time and its not a game. But he is nearly 15 now and some are age 15 and over and I figured that it would be me to get the first one rather than him have to do it furtively and get an older one. It was £7 second hand so if I really don't like it, it will go. Anyhoo, I think present wise we are pretty well done. if the house gets sorted today, then it will be food and just keeping on top of it all.
Oh and marking. Forgot that! But at least I can just do some as and when rather than feeling stressed about everything.
The stress is giving me chronic indigestion and affecting my sleep - it's all a long way from a baby in a manger isn't it?I wanna be in the room where it happens0
