The holiday adverts now start on Christmas Day!!!

Wooligan 2 squares for smoky - 3 squares for HTA
    Preemie hats - 2.
  • To be honest many of us think the same, as MLW says. All this nonsense of buying the most expensive presents for young children, whatever is on trend this year. Then if the shops run out of said item it is a catastrophe!!!.

I know I am old now but we used to have such fun making things for our 2 girls, as well as buying, but we just didn't have pots of money to spend. My girls still laugh at me because you can bet each year I always forgot one present that I had hidden in the wardrobe and found about 3 days later.

As long as we had food on the table, Christmas tree decorated and love round the table we were happy.

  • And that CANDLELIGHT is the TRUE spirit of Christmas!!!

Candlelight - my mother did this on more than one occasion and I was the lucky recipient. It was a real bonus to receive a late present - one was at Easter! I do remembering why she looked quite puzzled one Christmas morning as we opened our gifts - now I understand:)

I'm ignoring the TV ads -in fact, out of principle I refuse to buy anything or from certain places which continually appear in our faces. I've opted for locally sourced gifts this year and more in the line of luxury foodie type things.

I do think some of the ads are priceless - so called celebrities touting for business from places they wouldn't be seen dead in but they will do anything for money.
    NO FARMS = NO FOOD
  • Relieved its not just me!

Having a low key Christmas this year - gifts will be food, drink and cash, meals will be simple and we will concentrate on being together as a family. We will have our lovely DGD with us for her first Christmas :)

Usually have a big baking day at the beginning of December with DD1 to get all our plum bread, mince pies etc done ...it hasn't happened this year but I don't think it will spoil anyone Christmas to eat shop-bought for once :)

ScottishMinnie - I love your remark about celeb's touting for businesses that they wouldn't be seen dead in!! Spot on :rotfl:

While I've had cold and tummy bugs I have had to stop taking the medication that suppresses my immune system - just started back on it but all my joints are very stiff and creaky as the dratted Rheumatoid Arthritis soon rears its ugly head. :(

  • Hello all..i hope your all ok.
Scottishminnie..ouch toothache..nothing worse i hope you get it sorted..

Mlw..did you have a lovely weekend?..

Charlies aunt..hugs for you..hoping you feel better..

Candlelight..am laughing at your post on lost presents..my gran always did that..we all got 3 little gifts each..hat scarf gloves..sometimes we got hats and scarves or hats and gloves..bless her off she would go and find them in her ottoman..i did the same one year with a box of lego bricks for Samuel..i hid them in the utility room and totall forgot about them..well that year Santa apparently left one behind and his elves popped it in the wrong place..o Sam was so excited..
I agree with you about the tv adverts..its ridiculous..its literally thrown at you about your kids must have this and must have that..flipping eck..drives me potty..i am fortunate that we rarely have tv on during day..which is when most of them are pushed at children..its too much and i feel for parents who feel they are being pressured into buying things.
This year the girls have about 12 presents each..plus my MIL sent them some money to buy an outfit for Christmas day..we are going to look at dresses this week..they are so excited..
I love Christmas but its got to be a big selling point that makes me sad,, i just love the mystery of Christmas..whats in the little box and ooh that feels squishy..i love to see the girls and sam's faces..its what i live for..all the excitement and being busy is just a bonus..
Our Christmas is really about being happy and having good family and friends..fun times lots of laughing..like everyday but with gifts lol.
I got told i was a meanie yesterday..in a joking way..i refuse to put up decorations and tree's too early..i think it ruins it..we do it 12 days before christmas not the 1st of december..if i put them up then by the time christmas actually gets here the girls would be so bored with it..does that make sense....my older girls have already got theirs up and those with children are regretting it..children think because decorations are up then christmas is almost there..overexcited,not sleeping properly been there done that not doing it again.
right that is enough of me ranting about christmas..
    going to get girls up..
    will be back later
    love ftm

  • Afternoon all, grey and damp here today but not cold. Have just got back from afternoon walkies and the whole village smells of open fires and woodburners and I was instantly back to childhood(not that I've ever been that far from it anyhow!!!) and how everywhere used to smell when I was small. I wonder if it's people being green and trying to cut back on emissions or if people can't any longer afford the central heating and are using open fires etc. as an affordable alternative to stay warm?

I went to W*itrose on the bus yesterday and they had a very good offer on Aberdeen Angus Topside so our christmas day meat is now in the freezer, and I carried on to Mr.M and I got a lovely piece of smoked gammon too to cook for having cold over the christmas period. It didn't cost me a penny extra either because I've saved up all our pub quiz winnings over the year and had £105 pinned up on the noticeboard specifically to pay for christmas. I've also got in some nice cheese with a good use by date and some cured meats that are good until February so other than veg, fruit and perishables we're all gathered in and sorted.

Hope you are all keeping ahead of the game and staying safe if you have this abysmal weather that seems to be continuous these days, look after yourselves, Lyn xxx.

    Hello all..how are you all.

We have had a very busy week..all good apart from one incident that is hopefully resolved now..
We have been making christmas decorations..paper snowflakes with silver glitter on the edges..and card ballerinas with silver gitter tutu's..o they all look lovely..sparkly carpet but worth it...we also made no water snowglobes..we put that fake snow stuff in the bottom of glass jars and put little figures in them..not really sure what a t-rex has to do with christmas but Iris insisted..screw lids on and bingo a no-water snow globe..we made paper chains and some tissue paper balls for hanging from ceiling..the dining room is basically a childs christmas room..lots of bright colours and santas and elves and reindeers..plus they decorated their own tree..looks lovely..
The living room is a grown uppy version..green red and gold..we did it yesterday..wow never realized just how much christmas stuff we had..
We didn't go dress shopping as girls were a bit snotty and it was a bit cold so we shopped on ebay..they were so excited to see how many dresses there was for sale..5 hours later we had 2 dresses ...both have opted for the lovely tutu style with sequins gorgeous..and in cream..am sure thats a mistake i will regret when sauce or juice is spilled..but up to them..different styles but same colour..will look beautiful in them..just need to get some warm woolly cream tights..they have cream cardigans already..
Its seems my budgetting has paid off..i have a small savings tin and checked it last week..i had nearly £100 in it..so i have bought OH a lovely new food mixer..he is really into bread making..the bread is amazing..he made devonshire splits and ice buns too...the man has missed his vocation..he is in the kitchen now..my kenwood chef is making weird noises and gets soo hot when he uses it i am terrifed it will go bang...i also bought him some heritage seeds for the allotment..bless him..he will be shocked when he gets them..
I have finished the tutu's i made and 3 scarves..done some baking..mince pies and tarts..yummy..going to make brownies and choclate swiss rolls too..
We are breaking up from school on Wednesday..going to have a little party..with dancing..pin the nose on the snowman and musical statues which i am rubbish at..forget to turn off the music and if someone else is in charge of it i get carried away dancing and always lose..nevermind.
I still have presents to wrap and some cards to post..so will be doing them next week...
anyway got to go..oh has made a cuppa..ooh that man is lovely..
    love to you all

  • Hi lyn..we posted at same time..o thats so good thinking on saving wininings..your beef sounds good..
We have got most of ours already..just fresh bits to get..
Yes am a bit bothered by Storm Emily thats coming our way..it was very windy here yesterday..lost a lid of a water barrel somewhere..
I love the smell of chimney smoke..nothing like it is there..my gran had a proper fire..i would love to see it and know it would be waiting all warm and cosy when i got home..good memories..
I would love to have an open fire but the council won't let me..rotten swines..we would pay for it but the answer was a resounding NO!!!
we have to be careful how long we have our heating on for..but sometimes think *od it..and leave it..bad way to be but i dont like being cold..however saying that all my heat saving ideas have worked so far so its no too bad and others remark how warm my house is..so it must be working or they live in freezers lol..
    take care lovely..
    love

  • FTM I'm sad enough to still enjoy clearing the fire of ashes every morning, I never did feel sorry for Cinderella!!! It's lovely to see smoking chimneys, makes me feel warm and cosy even when I'm outside and it's blowing a hoolie!!! Lyn xxx.
