Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

I have mentioned that I was disappointed to find that my Aldi fresh turkey crown was packaged with the backbone and leg bones, thus not being as good a bargain as it appeared.
Another member has pm'd me, saying she found the same, after previously buying crowns which were not so 'loaded 'with bone.
Did anyone else experience this or were we unlucky ?
I can't remember what was on the label of the fresh turkey crowns but it said something like premium wing. I had a discussion with another buyer about it as usually a crown is just the double breast with breast bone. You could see they included the upper part of the wing. There was also a small amount of skin and backbone which I was happy about as it meant I was able to stuff the "neck end" and the stuffing stayed in place. All in all I was really happy with fresh crown I bought.0 -

I buy boil in the bag rice, savoury rice, cous cous , grated cheese, cereals , ciabatta rolls, white seeded batch bread, teacakes, crumpets, yoghurts, juice, bhajis and samosas when in as a special . The southern fried chicken wings and drumsticks packs are my family's favourites, so good. The only product that is not good enough apparently are the cat pouches, my cat is the only one here who thinks he is too posh for Aldi .
Funny that cos mine love with a passion Aldi tuna in brine I ran out of it and gave them John West and they turned their nose up at it lol!:rotfl:xXx-Sukysue-xXx0 -
Our Xmas was Aldi all the way! We had their fresh sprouts, carrots, broccoli, potatoes and frozen roast pots. Also bought the frozen turkey crown, gammon ham and hog roast . We bought their christmas pud with the oranges on and had it with their extra thick double cream and the salted caramel cream.Their mince pies were truly everything the papers said they were I am still jealously/selfishly guarding them for me only! The blackforest stollen was delicious as always and the wensleydale and cranberries cheese was lovely .OMG we discovered the sncikers equivalent choc bars much better than the original really thick lovely chocolate on them. The specially selected boxed clementines were the best we have found this year they were just lovely. I didn't like the ss cranberry sauce with port it was too boozy for me but the others loved it .Their yellow pkt of honey cashews and peanuts were lovely and the bucks fizz was second to none. All in all I have to say I have saved at least 50 quid on my xmas shop and we have really enjoyed the food we have eaten, excellent quality and the price is just unbelievable !xXx-Sukysue-xXx0

Just wadded thru all 50 pages noting stuff you guys recommend. Aldi is a bus ride away, but Lidl is walkable although rather grim place - but I'm going to give it a try.
I have spent years refining my grocery list down, so that much of what I buy now is Sainsburys value range. But there are some things I haven't been able to downgrade to and wondered if it might be worth giving Lidl a go for these:
Granola cereal
Fresh juices
Cat food (madam will only eat Whiskas)
Greek yoghurt
Dishwasher tabs/washing liquid
Brown sauce
Also wondering about body lotion, mousturiser, other toilteries - I recall some have won prizes. We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0 -
I much prefer aldi to lidl, think their products are superior, Id shop in aldi over lidl any day.0

I did buy a mini Xmas tree at Lidl and its still looking very healthy - going to put it in the garden after 12th night and see if we can keep it going for this year!We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0

Its funny isn't it? I prefer Lidl's products!
Its probably that I happen to like all the product I buy from Lidl but have had more 'duff ones' from Aldi - just the pick of the draw I guess
For instance Lidl sandwich egg mayo is the best around to my taste and the mature cheeses tastier. The sweets are bigger value packs in Lidl. But then Aldi does a better range of meats...
Then again we shop in both, one after the other most weeks anyway!European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.0 -

May I suggest a slightly different approach? Don't worry about what's been recommended - just assume that everything's fine unless several people have said it's not. You're very unlikely to be disappointed if you do that, and I'd back pretty much any Aldi/Lidl product against a supermarket value line. The value lines tend to be pared down to a price, but the Aldi/Lidl lines are just the equivalent of the supermarket normal own label ranges - ie on a par with the big brands. Aldi have even introduced their own value lines now!
I prefer Aldi, but it's just a matter of preference. I can vouch personally for both granolas - every bit as good as any brand. Aldi do fresh (not from concentrate) juices which are better than Tropicana, and I imagine Lidl are on a par.
Try replacing all your Sainsbury products - I'd be very surprised if you found any you were unhappy with.0
