Just come back from Lidl, picked up a nice lean pork loin joint wrapped in bacon down from 7.99 to 3.99 as date is only to the 5th, straight in the freezer for some future sunday lunch.
European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.

Thanks Doc N - will Aldi/Lidl prices be on par with Sainsburys value brands? I was thinking of switching those particular items because they are the ones that we find the Sainsburys value range doesn't deliver on and are therefore paying brand prices.

Just wadded thru all 50 pages noting stuff you guys recommend. Aldi is a bus ride away, but Lidl is walkable although rather grim place - but I'm going to give it a try.

I have spent years refining my grocery list down, so that much of what I buy now is Sainsburys value range. But there are some things I haven't been able to downgrade to and wondered if it might be worth giving Lidl a go for these:

    Granola cereal
    Fresh juices
Cat food (madam will only eat Whiskas)
    Greek yoghurt
    Dishwasher tabs/washing liquid
    Brown sauce

Also wondering about body lotion, mousturiser, other toilteries - I recall some have won prizes.

Where I live, Aldi is more convenient and I also think they stock a wider range of products. So I shop at Aldi with an (ever decreasing ) top up at Sainsbury's.

I still go to Lidl occasionally to stock up on DH's favourite luxury muesli (never tried Aldi) and dishwasher stuff. Aldi's dishwasher tabs are fine but the salt and rinse-aid in Lidl are brilliantly packaged. Aldi Magnum washing up liquid has also won awards.

I only have concentrated juice but the basic Aldi orange is fine and best value anywhere IMO.

I use their moisturiser (Day Cream) and it suits my skin just fine also the serum if I can be bothered. Body Lotion is great. Also the 49p mouthwash and roll-on deodorant is fine.

Why not try a little experiment and print off a Sainsbury's basics shopping list and then have a wander round Aldi and Lidl and see how prices compare?

I don't know the Sainsbury value prices, but I imagine they're much in line with Tesco's. If that's the case, the Aldi/Lidl standard lines are going to be around the same price - but better quality.

Reckon on Aldi/Lidl prices being 25-30% lower than Tesco/Sainsbury prices, and at least the same quality - often better.

Those Lidls with in store bakeries sell the most delicious blueberry muffins, not at MSE prices but @ 69p each they are as good as I have ever tasted, moist sponge with chunks of blueberry and a thick syrup inside and a crusty topping. Had 2 this weekend.

Their pastries are really good and great value. 39p for a maple and pecan danish, bargain ;)
  • I'm not sure if this has been mentioned as not had a chance to read through all previous posts but I adore cocobay aka the malibu copy. I would go as far to say it tastes better than malibu as has a bit more coconut flavour and at £5,15 a bottle I need to be careful not to make it too regular a purchase :D

Sorry should really have mentioned it is an Aldi purchase!

I finished the bottle tonight by adding it to some cloudy apple juice. It was very lovely :)
