Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

Lidl do big packs of 'cooking bacon' for (can't remember offhand but less than £2) for about 1kg. Its basically the end of joints that are starting to taper too small for them to slice 'standard' rashes off, so quite big solid chunks. There are packs in there with no rind or fat at all, totally lean. If your adept with a good very sharp knife you can slice tons of mini rashes, with a nice thick cut and no trimmings or waste. Any small bits left over are diced and frozen to go in quiche, pizza topping, cauliflower, cheese sauces etc.

I like to cook it fast and hot on a griddle, it doesn't curl up as its without rind and not much water in it. My family say its the best bacon ever and I agree and incredibly cheap, you end up with big freezer bag from a pack.

I won't be buying anything else bacon.

The goods on sale at Aldi are usually not a good deal (e.g. clothes, electronics, etc) even though they say they are superbuys or sales, etc. The stuff in the middle aisles. Research before being tempted to get those.
I've had some excellent buys :

Medion laptop with three year warranty
Hand held steam cleaner, with two year warranty, for about 30% less than elsewhere
Dog crate, whose leaflets showed that it was actually Rosewood, a premium brand for crates.
Knitting yarn, at half the price of elsewhere
Silicon muffin moulds at 99p for 6.

    From Lidl I've had:

    Electric food slicer
    Electric hand held blender/chopper
    Mini electric blanket-excellent for backache
Knitting needles/crochet hooks and other related items

I have mentioned that I was disappointed to find that my Aldi fresh turkey crown was packaged with the backbone and leg bones, thus not being as good a bargain as it appeared.

Another member has pm'd me, saying she found the same, after previously buying crowns which were not so 'loaded 'with bone.

Did anyone else experience this or were we unlucky ?

Have taken stuff back to Lidl....no problems, instant refund, no quibble.
Best to check with manager first, so no problems at till.

I'm no expert but I would not consider leg bones to be part of a crown, which to me means the breast area. I'd complain, especially if they have tried to downgrade the value from previous years.
  • Is Ballycastle so all year round or should I stock up now for Easter ?

The bones were binned and the bins emptied, but I have a second crown in the freezer, so will see what that turns out like.

I live very near to Aldi, so can go along when the aren't busy. I have taken a number if things back and only had one adverse comment, from a grumpy manager who said I should have returned some mouldy strawberries the very next day. She did give me a refund, though.
