Thank you for the reply! :)
Well as schnapps wise I don't mind really, it all goes to a punch so it will be a mixture of tastes anyways. It doesn't have to be schnapps really :).

I cant comment on the prices but you could use mysupermarket.co.uk to see what the top 4 supermarkets charge for what you need.
It's worth noting that mysupermarket now includes Aldi, though it seems to be only a limited selection of their products.

  • Went to Aldi yesterday to do a shop, first time we have been in a couple of years, I have shopped with them on and off over the years but kept hearing so many good things about them decided it was time to give them another whirl and see how we do.

The short story is we were very impressed, we did our usual kind of shop that we do every week in Morrisons and it cam e to £60, usually we spend anything from 75 - 100 for a comparable shop in Morrisons so straight off the bat we saved money, excellent, however I am a bit of a nightmare when it comes to food and would rather pay more for a better quality of food, I always thought the more you paid the better the quality but with everyday shopping it appears Aldi does not follow this convention.

Donkeys years ago when I was a single, young skint man I used Aldi quite a lot and had a bit of a fetish for something called frikandellen, Aldi used to sell them as a kind of a burger and I loved them, not really a fan of anything processed but theses were so so tasty, anyway, whilst mooching around there yesterday I noticed they still sold them in a meatball type format, I could not resist and decided to use them as a meatball with pasta sauce and spaghetti, got the Aldi special pasta sauce with pancetta and their own spaghetti, not the cheapest one the other one, it was delicious, I mean really really good, I enjoyed every mouthful of it, this is the way I will do pasta and meatballs from now on, I used to make the meatballs from scratch but the frikandellen balls were just delicious.

Still got lots of shopping to try over the next few days but so far had:

    The above
their toastie white loaf for 55p
    their gold label coffee
    a reduced round fruit cake
    fresh ham "trim"
    Welsh mature cheddar
cheap 15 pence low fat yoghurt's
    tiger topped muffins
    their own version of pringles
    the spreadable butter
the cheap pure orange this it was 62p or something like that

So far all the above has been delicious, no complaints at all and all a fraction of the price!

We also got some of their men's anti antiperspirant deodorant for 89p and the shampoo and conditioner that is 75p and again cannot fault either of them, the deodorant is excellent.

We were really quite surprised and will 100% be returning later in the week. Got their own fresh chicken for tea, my wife won one of these before christmas a t a poultry bingo session in the village hall and it was fantastic, really healthy looking chicken, fat in the right places, no urine burns on it's legs, had a yellow tinge to it where it had been fed corn it it's diet, it was the best chicken we have ever had and that includes a £15 bird bought from the local farmers market, the Aldi one beat it hands down, 2kg for about £4.75 unbeatable, the only thing that compares to it in anyway is Tesco's finest corn fed chickens at twice the price, so anyway got one of those for tea tonight with a frozen plum, apple and custard stroodle that look lovely for afters.

So far a big thumbs up from us :)

Just shows what a myth the big and expensive supermarkets like to try to get us to believe. Fortunately some of us never subscribed to this view and others like you, are quickly coming round! This was a brilliant post, I'm really glad it has been such a good move for you. The only problem I have, as previously mentioned, is that with so many converts, parking at Aldi is turning into a nightmare.

I popped into lidl this morning to get two packs of the recessed led eyeball spots.
Anyway their t bags were on that half price deal, so I got some.
A LOVELY cup of tea, really clean tasting & refreshing. I'm quite fussy about tea, try it!

Well I've done two shops in Lidl since last posting and I would say the results are somewhat mixed:

Orange juice (not from concentrated) was rather watery
Nail polish remover - very harsh
Face cream - a little heavy
    Dark chocolate - not nice

The greek yoghurt isn't as thick/creamy as Sainsburys but may persist as its a great deal cheaper and also comes in 1kg tubs and we seem to get through so much of it.

However the milk seemed creamier, seeded wholemeal loaf was nice, OH loved the museli and the granola was lovely (although I suspect it has a good few more calories than my normal brand).

I'm going to keep trying bits so I can build up a list, but I can't see it ever being the place for a main shop.

  • with regards to queues

lidl may have one till sometimes but they can serve 4 people in the same time someone in ASDA may serve one person. Queues look deceptively long but you can served quicker then waiting behind two people. OK they don't smile with puppy dog eyes while they serve you but hey I aint looking for a relationship I just want to get to the car

As do Aldi. AFAIK they still have both the burger & meatball types.

I bought 3 packs of the English Breakfast tea when on offer before Christmas, after much coercion from the Lidl w/end offer thread regulars. They were absolutely right.

Still love a good cup of Twinings though.
