I've started working on the checkouts and know what you mean! Whenever I scan fast people ask if I have worked in Aldi(or Lidl) before-which I haven't!
Gone are the days when Aldi staff had to memorise the prices! They would be paid more than the going rate for supermarket staff for this kind of skill, and being efficient.

These days the staff in London stores seem to have moved from Asian to Eastern European. All have a good work ethic and work damned hard for their money as far as I can see.

I agree however they certainly don't bother with really good Customer Service like the big supermarkets do! ( Though that doesn't bother me!)

I what way do Aldi/Lidl not bother with really good customer service?

When ever I have a question the staff are always happy to answer and give me the assistance I need. The staff are always friendly. On the very rare occasions I have returned some thing, usually because the item is to big/small I have had no problems what so ever and the staff have just processed my return without any fuss.

  • All the staff in ours go out of their way to be helpful. Often opening extra tills when it's busy.
The Manager is often stocking the wine shelves up, and will recommend or assist if you have any queries with the wines and spirits. In fact I'd say that in the wine section they are more helpful than in Waitrose.

Aldi and Lidl stores need separate Customer Service Desks. Don't have to be manned all the time. Just install a different sounding bell to the tills to the ones used to alert the others to open up another till.

I have been unfortunate to be stuck behind a customer returning two items (the only till open too) at Aldi and have to fill in paperwork! If the items are under £10, the normal staff can refund. Both items were over £10 - a baby bottle warmer and fishing waders!

Needless to say, I gave up and walked out the store, leaving my £18-20 of shopping on the conveyor belt.

I have been in supermarkets before, down the wine aisle and a customer asks the shop assistant questions about wine. On a few occasions I have helped the actual customer myself! For example, a customer does not drink red wine, but a relative does and wanted a good red wine.

I did a aldi shop the other week and ive never thrown as much food away, having said that a few items where better, but not really worth the effort to go seperatly for.
I got the impression that although items where cheaper, the quality was inferior, in some cases.:(

they do have some good value tool item and general gadgets.:j

Aldi salmon Wellington £3.99 serves 4 - can be found in the freezer section.....delicious!!!

Not much I have disliked in Aldi, don't like their frozen peas or the filled pasta, but love most over things, and their Maris piper frozen chips are sooooooo good :-)

In the stores I use they ask the customer to take the paper work to the packing shelf to be completed and they continue to serve the other customers.
