  • I'm visiting a new store tomorrow whilst out for the day. It's much bigger than the one I usually use so hopefully has lots more to offer. Excited :j
    I'm guessing it's an Aldi?
Everywhere you look there is a new Aldi opening but very few Lidl's. Lidl certainly haven't capitalized on the big 4 demise. The problem with Lidl as i see it, it doesn't really know what direction it should go in as it sells a lot of branded items and very often not any cheaper than the big 4.
People will fill their trolley up at Aldi but in Lidl will only buy a few things.
I wouldn't be surprised if Lidl ends up like Netto in a few years... down the pan.

Yes, it is an Aldi. There used to be a Netto in a nearby town. Horrible scruffy place. It's now an Asda. Nearest Lidl to me is about 25 miles so I wouldn't even bother making the trek. I've discovered I can now access four different Aldi stores within a 20 mile radius, three of which are relatively new. Great news :D

The Netto's round here were horrid and scruffy too but i miss them, corned beef 49p a tin, chopped toms 7p a tin, fresh chicken breast fillet £4:99 a kilo,Lidl and Aldi kept their chicken £1 above that,as soon as Netto went and Asda took over it went up £2 a kilo and corned beef went to £1 a tin.

I miss Nettos myself but where I live now there is both an Aldi and Lidl within 20 mins walk.

Had been doing all my shopping at Aldi but had a bit of an altercation with one sergent majorish assistant (didn't get my trolley in position quite fast enough and the sergent major insisted on telling me three times why I should behave the Aldi way as if I didn't know.., in spite of the trolley being perfectly positioned for quite some time by the time she'd finished her lecture. Never going back there again!

I now use Lidl and Asda, where people working there at least give customers the same respect they deserve and actually have a smile on their faces too! I've found the prices to be the same or better as long as you don't go brand crazy. My branch of Lidl's has baked in the store cookies, bread, rolls etc which are delicious!

My aldi 'tensing up as you near the tills' reaction is slowly disappearing. Oh and I am finding fruit and veg to be of a much better standard, and last longer! Can still get my red berry (with lots of red berries) cereal, and lots of other staples for the same price as I used to pay at Aldi.

    Red, Rose and white.

I tried it and found the white and rose quite sharp, will not buy again. Happily get the cheapest Italian from Aldi instead (£ 3.09) which is still a bargain.
Today I'll go in to see if my favourite washing up liquid is back , they have it only as a special once a year I think (bamboo balm).

Yes, they are very good permanent dyes, I used to use the dark brown one regularly, doesn't fade too quickly and covered my few grey hairs. I only switched as I found branded dye in the 99p shop so purely a MSE decision.

Monster claws multipack of 10 (monster munch rip off) 99p

How have they BETTERED pickled onion monster munch? The pack was immense. So much flavour - made my eyes water. Loved them.

    I'll second this - they're lovely!

The Cheese Puffs Wotsits clone are also as good as Wotsits and scrummy!

Agree with some of this, certainly.

My stepson and I used to quite enjoy a Lidl shop a few years ago - lots of cheap things that we liked and a lot of odd sounding things to try out.

Then we discovered Aldi and the trips to Lidl (which is a 2 minute walk away from us as apposed to a 10 minute drive to Aldi) decreased to the point where we probably go once a month or less.

Aldi has offered more and more over the past few years whereas Lidl appears to be standing still - the lack of items to do a "complete shop" becomes evermore apparent compared to Aldi, there are more brand items (which I can buy in any old supermarket - usually cheaper) and now the emphasis on it's "Deluxe" range (good but hardly MSE) has almost done it for me.

There are still plenty of people "filling trolleys" but the store is usually only fairly busy at best whereas Aldi is rammed full of customers whenever I go. The days of a relaxing Aldi shop seem to be well and truly over and I'm not surprised, they thoroughly deserve it.

I live with my ex at the moment. She is a typical Tesco Finest type of brand snob but she's slowly coming around. Has asked me to pop to Aldi in a bit for one of their free-range chickens (beautiful) for dinner tonight. Used to get the one in Tesco (which is closer for us) but she says the Aldi one is nicer. And I must pick up some 45p broccoli whilst I'm there. And some of their 59p Brussels pate. Oh, and the 52p pack of 4 white rolls which are so fresh and delicious. And 2 bottles of their Orange & Barley drink which is fruitier-tasting than Robinson's and half the price. And 2 of their scrummy £1 Carlos' pizzas. And a couple of the 49p Specially Selected fudge yogurts. And...

I think she's finally starting to see sense.
