Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

My stepson is studying hard for exams so thought I'd treat him to a fry-up last night.
Popped into Lidl to get some sausages. Wish I hadn't bothered now - they were not nice.
It was the Hazelmead Farm ones. They were only £1.09 so a great price but I wouldn't buy them again. Horrible lardy aftertaste despite being well-cooked (in Olive Oil - I don't use lard or cooking "fats").
Last time I did a fry-up I had the equivalent cheapie pork sausages from Aldi (the Ashfield Farm ones) and they were delicious. Odd as the Aldi bacon always looks a bit rank and the Lidl bacon is lovely. Oh well.
Also finally tried Aldi's "Harvest Morn Wheat Bisks" Weetabix clone yesterday and couldn't tell the difference from the brand. No big surprise anymore, the Harvest Morn range hasn't let me down yet. Weetabix is currently on offer in most supermarkets for £2 for a box of 24. Aldi's standard price is £2 all the time for the Harvest Morn ones (though currently on offer for £1.85) but this is for a 36 pack! So you get 50% more for an identical product at the same price at Aldi, even when the brand is on offer.
No wonder it's Aldi that are taking 90% of my grocery money each month.0 -

I withdraw my recommendation of the Aldi Bramwell ketchup. I was having some tonight with my dinner and thought it tasted a bit different (a bit more sour and a fuller mouth feel). I still have the old bottle (the dregs of which I will use in cooking). So I did a comparison and noted the following:
1. Old bottle has 189g of tomatoes in every 100g of ketchup, whereas for the new bottle it's only 132g of tomatoes.
2. Old bottle ingredients are tomatoes, sugar, spirit vinegar, salt, spices, citric acid. New bottle ingredients are tomatoes, sugar, spirit vinegar, MODIFIED MAIZE STARCH, salt, spices, natural flavouring.
3. Nothing to do with flavour but the old bottle was 502ml/563g and the new bottle is 500ml/560g.
4. I noticed the new bottle does not carry the Good Housekeeping Institute Approved 2012 that the old one did.
Oh well, it was good whilst it lasted.

Not impressed with any of Aldi's yoghurts. Low fat ones are either watery or have a foul chemical after taste or boring flavours!!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Lidl here: We get the large pots of Greek yoghurt (1 kg), occasionally the flavoured ones for the kids. Once opened they keep about 10 days so I plan a few meals/puddings around them. The plain is nicer than the flavoured which can be a bit gloopy, but still good value for yoghurt by the kiloFirst they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0

I have to disagree with you on this one. I love their Fat Free Vanilla yogurt (450 gm tub) almost as good as Onken and half the price. And their Optifit Active Fat Free Forest Fruits yogurt (4 pack) I find really tasty.
DH and the DGD's like the Duo Crunch and Yogurt split-pots. (They don't have to watch their fat intake as much as I do!)"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -

I'm going to disagree as well. In fact, I'd say Aldi's yogurts are the nicest I've ever had.
The standard cheapie 27p Brooklea ones are lovely and a bargain. But I usually treat myself to a few of the dearer ones too.
My top 2 recommendations would be the Specially Selected Devonshire Fudge yogurt (with little fudge pieces - scrummy!) and another one I can't remember the flippin' name of but it's another Specially Selected one - has strawberry on top and the creamiest yogurt I've ever tasted underneath. I'll update when I next get one (hopefully gonna pop in later today).
I believe both are only about 49p and are heaven on a spoon. They're not low-fat but as a little cheeky treat they can't be beat.0 -
