Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

Do Lidl or Aldi make a product similar to Calgon? I forgot to look.

I did my first big shop at Lidl on Saturday (no meat). It was also my first time using cash only (just started using envelopes) so I needed the total to be under £20. The total was £16 and I said, 'yes' outloud. The cashier looked at me sideways!
Now Ive never reacted like that after I use a debit card.

I can't believe all the stuff I got for £16.

Dishwasher salt in Aldi is 99p, got some yesterday. They have the mini bruschetta in again, the garlic and parsley ones are great, 99p a pack,

Aldi did used to sell their own Calgon and don't sell it anymore. The colleagues at 2 or 3 stores near me all deny selling it!

I think Lidl's dishwasher salt in the box with a pourer is excellent so I've never looked for any in Aldi. I did notice Aldi had rinse aid last week but it was a special on one of the tables so maybe they aren't going to stock it regularly.


I make a special trip to Lidl's every couple of months to buy dishwasher stuff and luxury muesli that DH likes, otherwise I'm happy with Aldi which is nearer for me so more mse on fuel.

You do realise that with the newer dishwasher tabs such as Finish Quantum you don't actually need to use salt or rinse aid in your machines? It's all built into the tablets already.

Ok so what might be a faff to me may not be to you, and the reverse will also be equally true - i.e. there are probably things that you consider a faff that I wouldn't.

So why don't you think on that and stop being so quick to criticise other people. We're meant to be on this forum to help each other and offer recommendations for products we've tried. We're not supposed to be here to pick holes in other people's lifestyles - unless you actually thought you were being helpful in some way?

Of course if you buy 3-in-1 tablets. But guess what is cheaper?

I don't know. You tell me. My dishwasher costs me 13p per wash (discounting water/electricity). It stays cleaner for much longer so I only need to run a cleaner through it every 2-3 months (cost £2).

How much does it cost to use when buying salt, rinse aid, dishwasher tablets and a monthly cleaner?


ETA: I could reduce that to 11p per wash if I used Tesco own brand but I'm not happy with the outcome of those as they leave glasses with white marks on them.

First you mention Finish Quantum ( > 20p per tablet) and then you use Tesco's own brand , but it's still much cheaper to buy everything separately.

Lidl 60 tablets for £3.19 is 5.3p per wash
Lidl 2kg salt for £0.99 lasts longer than one pack if tablets, so less than 1.5p
I use white vinegar as rinse aid 5l for £2.50 - £3, so it's negligible (but even normal rinse aid is 1l for ~80p and lasts very long)

The vinegar keeps the dishwasher clean too, haven't cleaned it for ages and it looks spotless after every wash...

Altogether it's less than 7p per wash. Who would have thought
