Just a shame they decided to put it on my Egg Card, instead of Egg Money.

    Only 4 months of hassle...

My £10 was just a refund I had forgotten about so I'm still waiting but then I did think it was a bit quick.

    Thanks to good old EGG.

It seems it only applies to new customers only.

I have had an egg account for years and they said i was not entitled because i was one of the first to brave this new way of looking at other accounts other than egg...low and behold the egg money manager! I must admit its a great idea but of course i am not entitled because i signed up before thanks alot egg....!

oh well nevermind eh? another example of "NEW CUSTOMERS ONLY" by the banks. I think its time to switch...

NatWest got very funny with me on the phone when they found out I was using this. They even put me on hold and got a manager to talk to me and tell me they were not liable to any fraud. They then sent me an e-mail which I forwarded to Egg. Here are both their responses:

Further to our telephone conversation, I write to confirm that using an aggregation service to view your NatWest accounts may compromise the security of your accounts.

Our Terms and Conditions state that you should not give anyone the security information used when you log on to NatWest Online Banking. This includes recording information in a place that might be discovered (for example inputting such information into a program that you have downloaded onto your computer).

Allowing an aggregate service access to your security details increases the risk of fraud. A fraudster who has access to your security details can impersonate you and remove money from your accounts. If transactions on your accounts are authorised by security information you have provided, you will be liable for those transactions.

Our primary concern is the protection of the confidentiality and security of your finances. If you are currently using an aggregation service to access NatWest Online Banking, please refrain from doing so and change your PIN and password immediately. You should also uninstall any of the aggregator's software if you have downloaded it to your computer.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

    Yours sincerely

    And Egg's response:

Egg would like to assure you that you?re covered under the Egg Guarantee for any third party fraudulent activity when using Egg Money Manager. This covers monetary loss for Egg and non-Egg Accounts accessed via Egg Money Manager.

Further details of the Egg Guarantee can be found on our website new.egg.com/visitor/0,,3_63245--View_1248,00.html#theeggguarantee.

Most terms and conditions require customers to keep their security details confidential and not to disclose them to anyone. By using this service you?re not disclosing your password to a third party; you?re simply having it encrypted and stored on your PC in your password safe. Your password never gets seen by Egg when this service logs you in.

If you?ve any further questions regarding any of the above please do not hesitate to contact our dedicated Egg Money Manager team on 0800 300 6050 who will gladly help.

    Regards

I was initially concerned and then braved EMM. Now I find it very useful. What I don't understand is if banks are concerned, why did they allow it in the first place? Every bank has slighhtly different security questions so they must have allowed EMM at some stage to enable EMM ask us the correct questions at the setting up stage.

It's not a case of 'allowing it.' They can't detect it.
Every bank has slighhtly different security questions so they must have allowed EMM at some stage to enable EMM ask us the correct questions at the setting up stage.
The software usually knows what to expect for particular institutions - if there's one that asks one out a selection of questions, it 'reads' the question and supplies the right answer. This is why you have to enter all the password answers in the setup. This is also why, when an institution makes a significant change to the login procedure, EMM fails to log into that institution.

EMM (and the other aggrigation service, AccountUnity, who provide the software to Egg) works by doing what you'd do manually to log into your account. It types in passwords, selects from the drop downs, clicks login etc.

    Only a lot faster.

Unless the 3rd party banks start timing how long it takes for a particular login to occur, they cannot tell the difference between you logging in and an aggrigation program logging in.

And even if they did start timing, all the aggrigation service would have to do is slow down what it's doing for that particular bank.

    Ah. thank you for that.
So are you happy using EMM knowing that banks are not keen? How reliable is the Egg guarantee ?
I quite likeEMM now and am reluctant to stop using it but want to be sure my money is safe.
    What do people think?

I'm happy using aggrigation software, I wouldn't be happy using Egg's EMM (thus I don't) - though this has more to do with the reliability of Egg's website and the fact I cannot use EMM on other PC's without going through the rigamarole of entering the usernames/passwords on every PC I might want to use it from.

The aggrigation service I use allows you to place the file it stores your details in, on removable media - I just plug my USB Pen into any PC, go to their site and it reads details off there. The only thing I usually have to do on new PC's is load the password safe onto it; and that's just a one off.

AccountUnity - I beleive they were the people to come up with the idea and software and are selling the service to the likes of Egg.
