  • Emsbet my letter for my 20 week scan said have a full bladder. Maybe it's a standard letter. In our hospital the scanning is in X-ray dept and no where near the antenatal bit so if all is well I guess I just have the scan and go. Mines a week Monday, can't wait! Will you find out the sex at your scan?

Hi Emsbet, you shouldn't need a full bladder for the 20 week scan as like you say, your uterus will now have moved further up and not be nestled deep in your pelvis. I had a scan at 16 weeks and wasn't sure what to do so went with a slightly full but not bursting bladder and had to go empty it so by 20 weeks you should be fine. At my hospital you didn't see a midwife or anyone after the 20 week scan.

Not 100% sure about the carpets LMM, they said that they would be in a week to ten days after we ordered them and I would get a call re fitting. Don't want it done until next Wednesday at the earliest as PILs are coming to help us wallpaper as neither DH nor I have done it before :o

So much variation with the bladder stuff! For my 12 week scan I was advised empty bladder, for my 20 week scan, I was told full bladder. My letters also say that all scans after 24 weeks are fine with an empty bladder.

Seems like other hospitals have other ideas! :D

I'd go with a fullish bladder (drink a pint of water one hour beforehand). It's easier to empty it than to fill it!

Oh and Emsbet, even if they found that they could do with you having a more full bladder they would just send you to have a drink and a walk and then try again. Don't be surprised if you get sent for a walk anyway, lots of ladies do to try and get the baby to move as they do loads of measurements at the 20 week scan and if baby isn't in a good position for them then they struggle and its easier if they can encourage baby to change position. It too 4 attempts (2 times each on 2 different days) for them to get all my baby's measurements as it was hiding each time!

Thanks for the info ladies. The letter I had for all my other scans said come with a full bladder but this one doesn't so I'm guessing that's my answer.

LMM, I think we have decided we will find out the sex. I'd like to know as I'm nosey ;) I'm getting a bit nervous about it though and just want them to say baby is fine. BIL and his wife were told at their anomaly scan in the previous pregnancy that the baby's heart hadn't developed properly and that the baby wouldn't live. It was so sad and knowing someone who that has happened to has made the chance of them picking up something more real to me especially as our luck with previous pregnancies hasn't been good.

Had a dream last night that my friend went into labour yesterday afternoon and had her baby this morning! I just got a text to say that she had her little girl at 3.40 this morning! This is the 3rd friend I've had where this has happened! Wonder if I'll predict my own labour? She didn't know she was having a girl and everyone thought she was having a boy except me! Weird!
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

Lovecrafting, I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. Massive hugs.

Emsbet, my 20 week scan is on Friday morning. I asked the midwife at my last appointment about the bladder situation (always a major concern of mine!). She said it didn't need to be full but it would be a good idea to have some in there. Having said that, at my 12 week one I misjudged it and the sonographer said my bladder was practically empty but she had no trouble and I still got a really good picture so I'm not too worried this time. I don't see anyone straight after the scan but I have to make an appointment to see the midwife again next week.
  • Emsbet of course you're going to nervous, and probably more scared than some others because of what's happened before. I'm trying not to worry, but even though the past three scans have been great I know this is the point where they might see something wrong. Until you see your scan and they tell you your baby is fine I don't know if anyone can reassure that everything will be ok. Big hugs xxx
