But what good is that? A transitory satisfaction and then a great big fall into reality. Better to have gone through that door already and worked out what life is really about? (Shruggy shoulders)0

Advice time.
Sorry to hear about the situation you are in. I know this isn't the same, but when I was around 17/18 my mum was really ill. She hid everything from me and my sister, we still don't know what really happened, or what was wrong, and I have found it really problematic ever since. It was just one part of a long line of things which have resulted in me being very distant from the rest of my family, and had left me looking at other families and wondering why they seem so much tighter knit than us and wishing it was different for me. I wish she would have just sat down and told me what was going on.
Appreciate your current predicament is not as straightforward and it's very difficult to know what to do, and I wouldn't know what the right thing to do would be if I had to decide, but think there is a lot to be said for always being open with the people you are closest to even if it might be worse in the immediate term.
P.S. what spirit said on the previous page is much more useful than my post, I am just reflecting on something your post reminded me of which is pretty much irrelevant to what you are dealing with right now.0 -

Good point.... we're all different, but then we all have things in common. It really doesn't matter as long as we feel we are doing the best we can and are being as true to ourselves as is possible, (IMO anyway).0 -

My mum hid her health problems. I'm sure it was because she was desperate to protect us, her children, which cannot be unusual and is more to do with being tight knit than not.
Trust that your mum loved you so much that she did everything possible not to hurt you. Your difficulties with the rest of your family may be about more than this.0 -
Urgh, I hate not being able to sleep and plus I'm going to be knackered for driving lessons tomorrow. Work stuff is bothering me and even though I've promised myself I'll go in tomorrow just to sort things out it's not enough to convince my brain and stomach to untwist at the moment.
On the bright side, I'm out on duty with a police special tomorrow evening (arranged by my wonderful BIL) in preparation for applying to be a police volunteer.Emergency savings: 4600

A lovely walk or two in some of my favourite places that Herts NPs and other relatively local people might enjoy:

It would have been nice if the Grauniad had spelt Ashridge correctly, but then I guess it wouldn't be the Grauniad if it had...
They have a few walks in the Guardian this weekend if people are interested, not just in the Herts area.
ETA, oooh, here's one for Pastures:

You know what the Gaurdian thinks of Hertfordshire people when it suggests a 1.8 mile walk will take you 1 hr 40 minutes!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
