In answer to Chewhislegoff, McGill is in Canada, and it is well-ranked internationally - generally McGill > Edinburgh > Lancaster. I expect that McGill will cost more per year, but Edinburgh is a 4 year course. (Maybe we should move to Scotland, so Edinburgh is free?)
LIR, those are very, very good questions - I will ask.
i think you missed the boat on moving to scotland, i think you have to have lived there for 2 years or something (and let's be honest, that's just not worth it!).
most of the league tables have lancaster above edinburgh i think, although there's not much in it. on graduate prospects both seem similar in the league tables. i expect you've already looked at this anyway!
i expect i'd rather be in edinburgh than lancaster from a "where would it be better to live" point of view.
i think LIR is right though - if he has specific career aims now, then it's important to look at the specific course and the specific prospects for graduates in that specific course, rather than the general reputation of the university.
if he's just going to uni to get a degree and doesn't really know what he wants to do yet, then i think this matters less, as generally when you end up doing something not related to your degree, employers in that field aren't going to know anything about the specifics of that course (i.e. if you have a civil engineering degree from the best uni for civil engineering in the country which has a general ranking of 15th best university in the country, and then you apply to a law firm, they are going to consider the general ranking and not the departmental repuation).0 -

Don't let him be tempted to skip the first year and join the second (as he'll be a year older than the Scottish entry age of 17 he might think of doing that).
Reason is he'll be billy-no-mates as all the friendship groups form in the 1st year. Those who get on socially with the class do better as they have better mutual support/information etc.).
If you look at my old London- Edinburgh thread you might find that Edinburgh's a great place to live.:D
Canada's lovely, and as McGill was founded by a Glaswegian I should give it an honourable mention. How expensive it would be, I'm not sure. They do four year degrees there too.
Lanacaster's in the countryside I think, I pass it on the motorway (M6). Does he like town or country? I found out I'm a townie after going to a rural uni:(There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Okay, guys and guyesses, I need some serious advice please. My son has received uni offers from Edinburgh, Lancaster, and McGill. Which should he take? We live in London, btw, and I shall probably have to foot most of the bill.
Why will you have to foot the bill? Tell him "Thought you'd never f*** off, here, have £5. See you in 3 years"0 -

No idea though.
I wouldn't even know how to pick a Uni for myself .... else I'd probably go to one. It's all too confusing.0 -

That didn't stop me. As a hippie yoof in London, I had no one to advise me, so I picked the one which looked like it had the nicest environment.
Arriving in the City of Bath for the Blues Festival later that year, I knew I'd made a great choice.0 -

It depends on the subject and the course obviously.
What does Mrs GDB think? Is she happy for you to encourage son to go to Canada?
You could box clever and accept all 3, Lancaster and Edin through UCAS and McGill separately. Then you need to decide which is 1st and 2nd out of UK ones. How do the offers compare?
Edinburgh has the fast train line + possibly flights down to London, so more likelihood of trips home. Will he have a car at uni? If not how will he get there and back. We've done innumerable trips up and down to Manchester, but at least we have family to stay with when we go.
Schools are usually good at offering an opinion, though eldest was advised to go to Durham which he wouldn't have enjoyed as much as M/C as schools tend to concentrate their reasoning on the academic.
I'd vote Edinburgh but do I have to give a reason?
Mine has got to choose between Bristol, Nottingham, Birmingham, Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan; I think the offers are going to have some influence.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Of those I'd go for Nottingham or Birmingham. Far enough away for independence and parents not knowing what I'm up to, but close enough to bring the laundry home once a month and raid the larder. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Dh chose based on a landscaping feature and made right choice for him.
I chose based on course content, i.e. sensible choice. In retrospect, reluctantly i admit it was the wrong choice. It was the right choice had i stayed in that industry career, but i did not. Had i gone to the other strong choice the course might not have been as rigorous but i probably would have stayed in touch with more people....ultimately, i think chewy is right....course content is good if you know you are gonna do it forever, if its a degree, rather than the start if a career, i think i would let the uni trump the course if the two were different.0 -

Touche mon brave.
Out of interest, I've told everyone here who I find attractive (George, Robert Downey Jr, etc).
