Hi Dawny, since Victory doesn't seem to be around at the mo, I'll fill you in - TOTM = time of the month :D

Consider the next bit to be the required kick up the rear:-

Ultimately you have to make a choice. You can choose to eat in the old way and continue to gain weight OR you can choose to learn some new recipes, start to walk to the shops if possible, use the stairs instead of the escalator or lift etc and be a healthier, happier person.

As the saying goes "Nothing changes if nothing changes". You have to commit yourself to making changes in order to turn your life around.

I know it sounds simplistic, and it's actually anything but simple to do, but at some point it has to happen if you want to see a weight loss. I often tell my members that if I had a magic wand I'd use it for them (and me) but in the absence of the wand a healthy eating lifestyle will work if you're committed.

Keater please don't cut your cals too much or you will set off a chain of events which will make it even harder to lose (and keep it off). Depending on your sex (I assume you're female, but could easily be wrong  ) and how much weight you need to lose, you shouldn't be having much less than 1500 cals in order to lose at a nice steady rate. I know ½lb seems paltry, but it is going in the right direction and if you're exercising as well, you could easily be losing inches all over your body.

I'm off out tonight (gasp!). It's an early Mother's Day gift from one of my daughters. She's taking me out to tea, then to see the Cavern Beatles at Wakefield Theatre Royal. I'm really looking forward to it and will let you know how it went tomorrow.

victory that was a really great post and you are right. You've got to keep busy, otherwise it seems like a really good idea to take a trip to the corner shop . . . .I also find reading the SW mags inspirational - mostly the recipes, but sometimes i like the stories too. It makes you think 'well, if they can do it . . . .' The recipes are great too, even if you aren't doing SW they'll be low fat and i've tried lots of new exciting things thanks to them. I had the sweet and sour sauce from the last edition this week and it was gorgeous. I'm knackered as I've spent all morning attacking the garden. I'm hoping to get some fencing put in this summer but there are trees to come out before then. Plus I tried to move the roof box to find that it's been on it's back all winter and consequently filled with water. . . . thank goodness there were no nasties in it. OH will be v surprised on his return.

Consultant is right..... you have to make changes to your every day life style, include more excercise and less naughty food, eat healthier, no magic wand as consultant says but there is weight loss at the end of it:D

To go on about being your best friend again;) if she/he went to the docs and was told.....her/his life span was reduced by say 20 years because of the excess weight she/he was carrying and it could be easily resolved by loosing the weight what would be the first thing you would say......Get rid of the weight:D

Or that there was high cholestorol/blood readings or potential pre diabetic.....all the shows I watch do all these tests and it seems most of them have hidden health risks they were unaware of but can be easily reversed by changing, being active.....

Also I have spoken to a few 'thin' customers at work and they all say it is hard work to keep that way but they have adapted and have grown to eat small and often, graze, nibble rather than binge and they all say that is the prize they pay to be able to be healthy, BMI fine etc and to wear what they want and live an active, intergrated life with their families and friends......

I really feel p..d off. Have been going to the Gym since Janary and attended 4 times a week. I use the cross trainer for 35 minutes level 12, threadmill for 20 minutes jogging and running and the rowing machine 5 minutes at full belt.
Had my review today and and may fat rate has increased and my weight.
  • Gardening and painting burns up calories right ? I've spent most of the day outside, spent over an hour digging up a raspberry bush in my friends garden, planted half of it in mine, and painted about 1/2 of the garden fence. I am absolutely shattered.

As Im disabled I find traditional exercise really hard.Sigh.
Ive managed to loose 11 lb since Jan which Im happy enough with though it seems slow.I guess I have to factor in the lack of exercise.
What Im trying to say is that you guys and gals who can exercise are very very lucky.
This week some days Ive walked to a friends 200 yards along the road instead of taking the car and for me thats great as I usually take the car.
Hope we all have a good week.

Try not to feel disheartened and give up. Over the last few years I have worked hard in the gym and my body shape has changed considerably, so it does work. I have worked with a personal trainer so have included a weights programme too, but one of the best pieces of advice I was given was to vary my workout. Apparently if you do the same programme all the time your body gets used to it and so does not work so efficiently.

If you use the treadmill, do an uphill walk rather than jog occasionally, and also do an interval programme as this really helps your stamina. Likewise on the cross trainer, vary the programme, and remember you should not be able to hold a conversation whilst working out - or rather you should be slightly out of breath when doing so.

Is there someone at the gym who can help with a programme for the machines/weights? I now have two programmes using weights, the bosu and swiss ball and since doing a total of 4 sessions a week, including different cardio each time, my fitness has increased amazingly and my muscle mass increased. My weight hasn't changed that much in the last few weeks as to be honest I've been eating a bit more than I should, but my clothes are looser and I feel better than I have in a long time.

You have done so well to go so regularly and I promise you you will get there. Three years ago I was in a similar situation and nothing seemed to change much, but suddenly (almost overnight it seemed) my body shape changed. It was like everything clicked into place. The good thing is that once you get there, even if you lapse a little something called 'muscle memory' kicks in and you don't need to work that hard to get back to the same state of fitness.

Good luck -and keep at it.

    Evening all

I wonder if anyone has noticed that I haven't really been as involved in this thread and the whole subject of losing weight as I used to be...?

Well, I have a confession to make - I fell off the wagon sometime ago, and the only reason I've stayed with the thread is because I know you all find the 2 pound weight loss club very motivating. The fact that my scales stopped working didn't help - it was like I was let off the leash, like not having scales anymore meant that I could eat anything I liked, so I did! But of course, scales aren't the only thing that tells you when you've eaten too much - the fact that clothes suddenly start getting too tight is another reminder, which is what happened to me.

Anyway, the faulty scales have been replaced, and weighing myself today wasn't a pleasant experience, so.... I'm back. Today was DAY ONE and I've decided that I need to do something more than just watch what I eat, so I went to find out about joining the gym at a local leisure centre today, and I've convinced DH that we should do it. (He's put on a few pounds since the scales broke too.) And I'm aiming to lose at least 5lbs by 5th April.

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone on this thread - if it wasn't for all of you I'd have given up long ago.

And for the others who are struggling to find the motivation, all I can suggest is you keep reading and posting on this thread, because I really believe that there is a lot of useful information here and it will eventually start to have the desired effect.

We're all in this together - it's a hard slog, but together we can win!
