I am not sure how long this list is being held for as I think they can be held for up to a year.
There will always be people retiring, leaving to have babies, re-locating for various reasons or just taking up alternative employment.
When this happens they will go back to the reserve list but 5 months on they may have to go through maybe 10 people to find someone still interested in taking up a post.
Civil service has a natural turn over of staff like any other business but it is more cost effective to maintain waiting lists than to advertise for each vacancy as it arises

I was under the impression that we were reserves for this position. If people retire or have babies etc in my department they are certainly not replaced. The only new faces we ever get are transfers in perhaps or surplus staff re shuffled.

You n me too, Bosscat. My department had a large recruitment exercise in 2010 recruiting around 100 C Band equivalent grades and they had a 100 strong reserve list. I believe around 4 or 5 were taken from it and that was over a 12 month waiting list period.

However, it doesn't cost anything to keep a long reserve. It just allows for hope in a commonly hopless situation.

That said, I really do believe there will be a lot of people, especially in the those areas such as the midlands, who will be successful yet. For every fifty provisional jobs there's the potential for as many as 25 posts unfilled from multiple applicants.

    And good luck to them.

Great insights as usual. I wonder if you would share your thoughts/knowledge on the following. I have been offered a post and, like some others I imagine, have never worked for the CS before. A few things running through my mind. First, what is the effect on existing staff morale when an outsider with no experience gains a post at EO level. Second, the job specifications etc. indicate a whole range of possible job roles being on offer. Do you believe all these roles are actually advisor roles. Third, what sort of induction / on job training do you envisage being on offer. Your thoughts (and everyone else's of course) much appreciated. Thanks.

Hopefully this time there will be very few, if any, surplus staff left in the dept [they were first in line for the EO posts] so maybe DWP will use people from the reserve list?

Redsky, I was told yesterday by the recruitment helpline that the reason the numbers have been reduced so dramatically is that they decided to use up all the surplus staff first, then offer the remaining positions to candidates.

The rediculous thing about that is the organisation was supposed to do this BEFORE the campaign, and I believe it was only meant to amount to about 1500. Considering, and what I have now been told, some areas have been reduced from 150 down to 24. Absolutely abysmal. 24 external positions. That means 126 staff sitting around doing nothing for god knows how long in the department.

Saying that, I was also informed the the provisional offers sent out will be the final numbers and not reduced any further. So at least that is a small mercy!

That's right - if it's raining then the Sun hasn't come up and it's still nighttime.

More rubbish from the mouth of Makem 'fountain of not quite enough knowledge' Bill.

I think if you were going into a situation where you were leading a team of ten or twelve then you might find that it would be difficult to motivate them and get them on your side. However, these roles are not processing; they're face to face (f2f). In f2f you tend to manage your own workload as opposed to staff. You will have a diary and a quota of customers to deal with. You will have people referred to you by AOs but you won't normally be expected to manage them. There is normally a more senior C Band who would have responsibility for managing the AOs in the office, or on their floor plate, looking after their HR and performance targets etc.

As for training, I was told that the training will take at least five weeks, primarily classroom, before you’re allowed to start communicating solo with customers and that you will be well supervised doing that at first. That said, I am only telling you what I was told by an HEO within DWP, who is not involved in the training process. I think he was just referring to training that had been given previously. Your work is more likely to be Youth Contract and dealing with people under the age of 25, and moreover 18; new signers etc.

Nothing to get hung up about though, as you’ll not be alone in your training and you’ll all be in the same boat. The post is subject to a 6 month probation period and normally a probation period would mean having three meetings with your line manager during that time, maybe at 2 month, 4 month and at the end of the period. You would be assessed and guidance will be given. If you weren’t up to the job you would not be held for six months unless they thought they could improve you sufficiently. That said, it is rare for people to be dumped as the recruitment process is quite thorough. Probation does not give you the protection of permanent employment. They can dismiss you summarily and without having to justify their reasons, although you would be well aware that this was to be your predicament before it happened. It tends to be the arrogant ones who don’t want to listen and wish to unsettle others that get shown the door. I don’t remember seeing (m)any of them on here J…do you?

ok just got my email about reserve list placement! Coventry/Warks/Worcs. Score of 35. Kind of frustrating.

    Morning Daniel

I can confirm you are 2nd on the reserve list.

    Kind Regards
