Not good. If the computer runs out of "physical" memory it has to use the hard disc as what is called "virtual" memory. As the hard disc is a lot slower than physical memory, the computer starts getting very slow. If you upgrade your memory to 2GB it should make a huge difference; this can either be done at a local computer shop or, if you feel confident enough, by yourself - usually it involves little more than opening the case, removing the old memory boards and putting the new ones in; about a 5-10 minute job.
If you go the latter route, go to crucial memory at http://www.crucial.com/uk/ and run their scanner which will identify exactly what you need. I've used them a number of times and found them excellent.0 -
CCleaner is generally recommended. I have been using it for years without any issues and it's free :j

I have tried before and get to steps that don't make sense (to me) or are written in jargon I don't know. One thing that I think it could be is the memory. Is the physical memory being at 88% ok? Nothing is showing as "free".
So how far did you get? If you could just post what is requested in step 1 it would help people trying to help you 'see' the info about your machine. You can always ask specific questions on here for anything that you don't understand.dixie_dean wrote: »Cheers. will try those two. Typically I just uninstalled them a few hours ago to try and speed things up!
Uninstalling small programs like that will not speed up your machine, as they are only actually active when you choose to run them.dixie_dean wrote: »I find strange/interesting but may not be, is that sometimes it runs fine and sometimes pretty quick but maybe 20% of the time is awful - does that provide any clues?
Is it definitely your machine that is slow and not your internet connection - who is your ISP and what speed are you getting here? Click the BEGIN TEST button. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Think it is the computer as when a friend used my wifi at the same time his was fine and mine was slow.
I think I may have some extra memory in an old laptop. would the same card work in a dell and a toshiba machine (sorry if thats a silly question!)And if, you know, your history...0 -
as above said CCleaner. someone on here told me to remove the one I had which wasnt free and use CCleaner and the results are the same. All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0

still worth getting CCleaner done as advised. Installing HijackThis, running and posting the log here usually results in Closed (user) pointing out best steps, but this may be too complex? its not hard, but thats easy for me to say :-DFriendly greeting!0

That's fine - it's what you want to do.
Do the same thing for the the registry option as well (on the left of the window).0
