    Hi takethis,
That's still looking very complicated for a novice especially as I have to do it all via my son's laptop - web pages opening slowly to varying degrees still.

It's very easy, just unfamiliar. Take it step by step.

Did you backup with acronis before you started?

Is your son's web browsing ok

if you boot the machine using F8, then safe mode with networking, does it work

Ok. This is where I'm at. Have a copy of windows xp but haven 't installed yet.

Acronis - found this by chance in the build up to this process, wasn't quite sure what to do but had a go - disc says recovery manager??

Son's laptop & my ipad browsing fine thank goodness or I wouldn't be here now & then I'd be really stuck.

So reboot and press F8 as it reboots. Shall I try that now?

Closed - can you see anything in your intructions on post 72 page 4 that may have caused this as upto that point things were looking good?

Still waiting for the full model number. Is it the C260?

The alternative is the back up the Drivers using Driver BackUp software.

You were having net problems on this machine beforehand, hours to download avast etc.

post 1 said you backed up, how did you do that? If you haven't used acronis to backup, then it's not going to be of use.

The only internet related suggestions in post 72 were

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:9090
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local;<local>

    neither should affect chrome

Yes but by Post 68 I had no problems logging on so thought I was home and dry. Backing up to me meant more my documents and photos. My ex is supposed to be bringing me the back up discs.

Where do I go from here? The reboot & F8. Tempted to abandon ship & take it in somewhere :-(

I'd make sure the backup discs work before reinstalling windows. If you backed up, why has the ex got the discs?

Have you tried a different ethernet lead?

Thank you so much, your help has been very much appreciated. I'm on a massive learning curve here and was determined to try but was feeling increasingly out of my depth . . . . . & like throwing the PC out of the window . . . . or crying! I have now abandoned ship and taken it into a local place that came highly recommended.

I will continue to try to learn & I'm sure I'll be back here again soon - in a couple of weeks when I change my Internet provider perhaps?

Once again, thank you very much for your help and sorry for copping out.
