HV/ said her latch is fine tho there are times when this monkey wont fully open her mouth but still feeds fine.
there is no milk spitting around her mouth. HV said aswell she seemed to have only a bit of tongue tie but that wouldnt affect her latch. MW said for what she could see, she feeds fine.
Some people and i notice too that the whites of her eyes are not white, they are yellow.

Hmm, any tongue tie can affect latch. Do you have funny shaped nipples after she's fed - like a lipstick, i.e. squashed on one side?

Could you ask for a test for jaundice? It's a simple heel prick.

Hello all - thought i'd finally stop lurking and post (long time lurker on the pregnancy thread, been on here a few times). I'm a first time mum with a 4 week old little boy - so still very much adjusting to parenthood!

Was wondering when breastfeeding started to settle down for everyone else? We're still really struggling - my LO seems to feed much better from one side and feeding from the unfavoured side is quite painful. LO is gaining weight and my local feeding specialist says that he's latching well and feeding well. But it's just still so painful for me - my poor nipple is really suffering :(. I'd have thought the latch is still not great, but i'm not sure what else I can do....

All sounds totally normal, Bex, and at four weeks I was still experiencing problems. I think I'd got it pretty much sorted on one side but was still having pain on the right. Have you experimented with different holds? Do you use any cream, e.g. lansinoh?

Congratulations! What's your little one called?

Hi Morocha, my baby had a tongue tie and we were initially told we didn't need to do anything about it. But when I mentioned it again to the midwife she made an appointment for it to be cut and he has been more settled and fed better since the very first feed after having it done. So it may be worth exploring if it should be done. It was a simple procedure which took seconds and he fed straight afterwards. His tongue tie was quite thick though but it may be worth you asking for some more advice on it.

Can I ask what peoples experiences of using a dummy is? I have just started using one with our little man who is now 4 weeks. Basically I didn't want to use one but he was using me as a dummy and it does help to settle him. I only use it when I know he isn't hungry. And just to help settle him and then take it out just before he falls asleep. But I can't stop feeling guilty about giving him a dummy. I know it may sound silly but feel like a bad mum!

Dummies are recommended by the FSID (the cot death specialists)! You're not a bad mum!

Well, it seems all that night-time practice has finally paid off - today at nursery she stood all by herself, not holding onto anything or anyone, for 4 seconds! :jWe'll have her walking around in our bed at 2am next... :o

We use dummies too and I don't feel at all bad about it - it comforts her and helps her settle at night. We only use it for going to sleep though - I'm determined not to end up with one of those toddlers running around with a dummy in their mouth!

Marta, good luck with jabs tomorrow x

    He's Alexander.

I have tried different holds, but find I struggle to support him well which I think is part of the problem. He also doesn't open his mouth that wide which doesn't help. I had been using cradle hold which is fine on the right but not great on the left. The feeding specialist suggested I try feeding with him sitting upright facing me which does get a better latch but still hurts like hell :( . Plus it seems my milk flows faster in that position so he often ends up gulping/choking and coming off all the time (yet more pain).

I'm using Lansinoh which is great in soothing and healing my nipples, but next time I feed they get sore again...

no, she checked me but to be honest she didnt seem to know much, said i could talk to a BF consultant( i told her it hurts when i feed the baby, specially the left nipple) but wasnt sure if she does home visits.

    Hi Bex..

nutella, your baby is growing up fast.
some days i hate not to be able to enjoy my baby fully because of her crying but i really do not want her to grow, shes already 3w+3, where did the time go?

I'd ask for another visit or if there is a lactation consultant in your area get them to look. I've heard from a lot of people that tongue ties are over looked by midwives and HV's.

Well done to your little one Nutella :j won't be long until she's off.

Dummies are MUCH better than thumbs/fingers. They are created nowadays to intefere with teeth as little as possible. Thumbs if sucked often will push the front teeth outwards. x

  • Dizzi - Big Hugs! You are doing fantastically well having an under one and a very pregnant bump! Try to think positively even though I know it must be hard for you.

We love dummies here, felt myself justifying it to people at first but now I don't care, she loves it and its definitely a comfort thing, not usually needed to get her to sleep which is good. She does much prefer chewing her first or indeed index finger and thumb though which is the main reason we gave her one in the first place!

Marta - we have jabs tomorrow too! eek! As for sleepy little ones, I've noticed my little one (9 weeks this week) has been a bit more sleepy but cheerful in herself this week, the week by week book doesn't suggest its a developmental thing so may just be a coincidence.

Eeek we are going for first proper night time bottle tonight. She will be getting it at around 11.30 and we'll see what happens in terms of sleeping. The last few evening she has been complaining for food after 1.5 hours after the last feed started so sometimes only an hour in between the end and start of the next feed. Haven't given her a bottle yet today so just seeing how the normal bottle goes first. Have hungry milk ready to try on another night but less keen to give her that as I've read about big molecules and upsetting the digestive system so need to read into that a bit more before I try her on it.

    Nutella - yay for standing!!!

**Bex** - If the nipple is slightly red and sore then you probably need to sort that out first before putting the lanisoh on. I always think of the lanisoh as a barrier cream to help prevent the nipple being sore but if its already sore then that needs some help to heal first - some sort of moisturising cream to help it? Maybe express for a few days to give that boobie a break? I was still religiously applying lanisoh at 4 weeks but now at 9 weeks these bad boys have toughened up - still hurts sometimes though! Hope you solve the problem :)

moneypenny I wouldn't mess about with formulas, if you get one that is working I'd stick with it. Every 3/4 hours is normal at that age with formula, I'd say consider the hungry baby if she is taking the recommended ounces for her age and wants more within say 1-2 hours xx

  • Bex, welcome and congratulations! I too could feed on the right ok but not the left (no he prefers thr left, huh!)

Have you tried holding him in the position you would to feed him on the right, then keep him same position, but move him over to the left boob (you may need a pile of pillows or cushions, and a helpful OH to work this out to start with!) So basically he ends up feeding from the left but in the same position he would be in if he was feeding from thr right - does that make sense? It helped us as it gave my poor left nipple time to heal, then we moved to cradle (and other positions) normally, which was easier with a non-damaged nipple :)

Reuben can now crawl forwards!!! Hopefully I will lose some weight chasing after him now :D I've given up chocolate and crisps for lent, so the combo of eating less crap and moving more should help!
