Hi ladies, a quick question and hope somebody has some experience of a baby who doesn't sleep enough! She's happy and alert and feeding well but she's had on average since Tuesday 7 hours sleep each 24 hours and this is either 1 solid sleep or 2 split sleeps overnight. Yesterday morning she woke up at 8am and didn't sleep at all till 11pm - not even a 5 minute snooze while feeding - she then woke up at 3am and was smiling and feeding till 5am and went back down till 7:14am and is still wide awake now, this has been pretty much the pattern for 4 days now and her eyes are all red and puffy and she looks shattered! How on earth do I get her to sleep anywhere near the length of time she needs to?

I feel your pain! I have had the exact same worries with little CJ since she was wee. All the books said newborns sleep up to 20hrs a day... not mine! 7-8 hours was good going.
I've done my head in with worrying about it, and then questioning whether i should just let it be, and let her do what she wants. In her 12 months, i tried driving her round, rocking, feeding, 2hour walks, singing and sometimes, all of them...
I think where i have got to is that YES, i should intervene and she DOES need more sleep than she would do off her own bat, and that some babies, just don't have the sleep skills to do it by themselves. And yes the red eyes, staring baby look is very familiar to me!
One of the main issues with CJ especially in the early months, is that her sleep"queues" are very hard to see- so easy to miss, and then she tipped over into overtired, and got even harder to go off to sleep, and lo. a vicious circle starts. By the time she actually yawns, she was already well over.
The two most successful things in terms of getting her more sleep, were 1) introducing an age/time based schedule based on how long roughly children of X age should be awake before a nap. That really helped both of us prevent her getting too tired to sleep.
I cant remember how old your LO is?
Where we were recently till about 11months, was morning, then 3 hours awake, nap, three hours awake, nap, three/four hours awake, bed time.
As a much younger baby, it was morning, then 1 hour awake, nap, 2 hours awake, nap, 2 hours awake, nap, 2 hours awake, then bed.
Between the two routines, we have gradually extended the awake time, and dropped naps as she got older.

The second thing, was working on her sleep skills, having a nap routine, so using the same phrases every time before a nap, sitting in the nursing chair for a cuddle in a dimmed room, putting on her Ewan dream sheep, then putting her down sleepy, and then using the gradual withdrawl method of sleep training. Basically giving her lots of warning that it was nap time.
It hasnt been easy, and there are developmental phases when nap times go to pot and i've resorted to boobing her to sleep, and getting into bed with her, but she is so much better now.

HTH, Shout if you want to ask anything else.

Just a quick query babies tummy has been hard after feeds and softening on and off. She looks like she's been straining a bit today but no poos since 5am which is unusual. She is crying a lot again tonight which she has done for the last three nights & those !cries have been for milk. I'm worried to feed her too much tonight (though I have everytime she had a hunger cry) in case I'm over feeding her or the cry is in pain with her tummy. She has calmed down after each feed. Hubby said if she was blocked or constipated and I was 'over feeding her' then she would surely throw the feed back up of it can't go down the usual route, it sounds sensible to me I just don't want to keep feeding if it's actually making her tummy worse :(!

Agh it's So hard knowing what is right to do :/

How old is she now Moneypenny? As they get older, they do poo less often.. CJ went quite quickly from 8 per day, to 3 per day, to suddenly once every 6 days. Scared the life out of me! Is she BF or FF or mixed feeding now? BF are alot less to get constipated. I would suggest trying a few things, bicycling her legs to get things moving, a gentle tummy massage helps too. And if you have a baby chair with a vibration setting, then i always found that helped move things along a bit.

Love the picture Nutella :j they find fun in the stupid little things, or the cupboard under the sink  if you're my child but no interest in toys drives me bonkers.

Evening all :D What is everyone doing tonight? My OH is at work, baby is in bed, stuck my nappy wash on, and gave everywhere a quick tidy around, and now I have 'What to expect when you're expecting' to watch with coffee and a Malteaster Bunny! Feel so sleepy tonight and have no idea why as we all slept until 9.30 this morning  The more sleep you get....

Thanks Gilly :) She does love her toys too, but nothing beats a good bit of packaging!

My OH is at work too, I've just made up tomorrow's milk, done a bit of cleaning, changed the bed sheets and am now watching 'Take me out', drinking coffee and eating chocolate mousse with OH's teenage son who's here for the weekend. Just like Saturday night should be :D

Oh no Sunshine, so sorry to hear Aiden is poorly, sounds horrible :( Hope your night isn't too bad and that the antibiotics kick in soon. Big ((hugs)).
  • Oh sunshine :( thinking of you & praying for a speedy recovery.

Thanks Kira, she is Breastfed, 5 weeks old I think I would have been ok about the lack of poos only or the serious straining and the feeds coming back up. Thankfully the last two feeds have stayed down so I'm no longer too worried - it was dehydration I was worrying about mainly!

Nutella - god help me when she is 18 at least I know where she is now!,!!!
