The dummy, do you sterilize it every few hours or only when it falls or so?

I'm curious as to how you've done your feeds when your lo was newborn. Y mw said it was ok to leave the water ready, some people have mentioned about getting the formula ready with hot water and put it in the fridge, the NHS book says to do it fresh every time... My lo asks for a feed randomly, it could be an hour, two, three or almost four and she's very impatient. I don't like to make her wait, because she gulps the formula down and then vomits soon after, so I'm not sure I can do every feed from fresh, specially at night, because by the time she wakes me up, I have to rush and get the bottle quick. If she were like clockwork, I could put the alarm and get it ready, but when I tried that, she slept for a further hour or woke up soon after a feed again, so I ended up throwing it up unused or half way. I would like to find a system that is safe and quick, I know the guidelines but well, they don't really suit me at the moment, with the 30min wait plus my lo random sleep pattern, I should stay awake 24h to ensure she's got the formula as the book says.

If I were to get the formula ready for 3-4 feeds at a time and put it in the fridge, how do you warm it quickly? I tried the hot water tap but seems to take forever, I tried the bowl with boiling water, but o have to wait both for the kettle and the warming process. I though about a bottle warmer, but it seems it also takes a few.minutes and I could not find one with thermostat that tell you when it's ready and do not keep heating it up. The easiest method I've found is the one I'm using, putting boiling water in the freshly sterilized bottles and close them tightly ready for use, but I'm now concerned this method might not be that safe, despite being the one recommended by my mw. Any ideas?

Bottle warmer is the only quick way to heat and its not instant. or use a flask and nake them up as you go?

Marta- dizzi has a really good way to make them fresh and ready straight away. Read back for her post, but I think she has a flask of boiling water, half fills bottle and adds formula, the. a jug of boiled water in the fridge and add to top up and cool down

Re. warming milk from fridge - I timed bottle warmer and kettle, and kettle was quicker! The trick is to pour really hot water from the tap into the kettle, and only as much as you need. It then gets to boiling point really quickly. And once you've put the bottle in the bowl of hot water, lift it up and swirl it around once or twice whilst it's heating to 'spread' the heat quicker.

Dummies - when I sterilise bottles every 24 hours, I throw in any dummies that have been used during that time. So she uses a dummy for up to 24 hours, but any that have been on the floor get thrown into the 'stuff for steriliser' tub straight away and aren't used again until they're sterilised. We have 8 dummies :)

We bought the £20 one from Asda in the baby event, pops up and down easy enough, comes with a bag. Only thing we did was buy an extra thick mattress from Amazon (£25) I think. Slept in it for a week when we visited my folks and slept great :)

You can fit inside a travel cot? Mental!

    Happy Christmas everyone x.

Just logging on quickly before bed. Freddie's enjoyed his first Christmas - it's coincided nicely with his first cold. Last night he woke about 65 times, i.e. every time his nose blocked up and he woke up unable to breathe. I guess it takes a while before they realise they can breathe through their gobs. I'm absolutely !!!!ing exhausted :D

Off to bed. Hope you all had a lovely day x.

Marta - we used a bottle warmer downstairs (the nuby one) and upstairs we used a 2nd kettle, heated water put in a jug and put premade bottle (stored in mini fridge upstairs) into warm but I literally just took the edge off the chill and swirled to speed up as nutella says. Re the guidance I took from it the importance of ensuring that the water u mixed with the powder needs to be above 70degs to kill off any bugs in the milk powder. I accepted the risks of premaking, I would make a batch (not waiting the full half hour) cool quickly and store in back of fridge. Once I got them out to feed I would discard after two hours any unused milk. Obviously if money were no object then cartons in the night would have been used !!
Re what the midwife says I think I said that we were told that too but I changed to hot water when realised but ultimately you as mum make up your mind what suits you/risks accepted etc. the Dizzi method or Mozzy method are fine in my book but may not suit others etc

Let's see if I'm getting this right, because the general lack of sleep is making my brain mushy!

Option A) boil water, put into the bottles before the 30min wait, add formula, close them, put them under running water to cool quickly and store them in the back of the fridge for up to 24h. When a feed is needed, you run ia bottle under hot water or put it in a bowl of hot water to warm it up a bit to around room temperature. Discard milk after 2h.

Option B) prepare as you go. Boil water, put it in a flask. When you need a feed, add half of the water you need for a feed from the flask into the bottle, add the formula, shake and kill the germs if any, add the rest of the water with cold water from the fridge (boiled and sterilized previously). Maybe play with measurements until you get the temperature right? Why can't I just add directly boiling water+ formula + cold water? Why do I need the flask?

Is there any other method I'm missing?

I hope you had a lovely Christmas! Ours was very good and DH gave me an extra present by doing the whole night shift so I could sleep, because yesterday I linked my night shift with Christmas dinner making, so I had not slept much. So to ensure I didn't wake up, he took her into the living room and stayed awake until 9am. He's a brilliant husband and a great dad :)

We had lots of soft toys for her, between our presents and what everybody else gave us,she might easily have like 15 soft toys all of a sudden!! Lol. I guess she'll be able to enjoy them in a couple of months? When do they start to play with stuff?

You dont have to have a flask, you can use straight from kettle it just saves you re boiling etc everytime you need a feed. :) xxxx

    Oooh, I see!! Thanks!!
Mw came again today, 5th visit so far, I'm impressed with the postnatal care. My lo put back all the weight and a bit more!!! She's put 360g in two days, that's more than a pound, I think. She said that she thinks my LO hasn't got reflux but bad wind. She hasn't thrown up since yesterday evening, but we are keeping her straight up for 20min after a feed and we wind her often, although DH is better at that than me!! I'm consider buying a sling, so I can have her with her back straight and still move easily around. We do have a baby carrier, but it's fiddly to put on for this kind of purpose. I'd like something very flexible, easy to put on and take off, just to be at home, something I won't mind if she pukes on it but where she can feel cosy and that will soothe her if she's got wind.... Can you recommend any? I was having a look at the Moby slings, but I can't really tell if it's easy to put on if I'm on my own. I don't mind paying a bit more if it does worth it, but with prices ranging £20-£50, I'd like something recommended by mums who have used them. I've just joined Amazon family and I could use the discount on that.
