are there ever any deals (on flights and/or hotels) to be had for last minute trips with direct flights?

would prefer to fly direct, but flights in jul/aug/sept are all pretty standard at about £700pp and not nearer the £500 mark which would be great!

Not a chance. Flights get more expensive the nearer to the date of travel as those that have to go last minute are prepared to pay the price.

As an example, we paid around £680 direct with BA with a connection from Aberdeen (that always adds on £80-100). I watched the price daily right up until we left and it never went down to that again. However 2 days before we left a bog standard economy seat was £5000!

Does it have to be one of those two as neither are great? If not then consider the Imperial Palace for location or the Excalibur.

Circus Circus all the way. We stayed in Riveria a few years ago, and it smelt of stale ciggy smoke (even though it was supposed to be non-smoking), the rooms were clean, but very tired looking, and it just felt, well, manky for want of a better term. It just seems old, and dark. Not very pleasant.
CC has just been done up, but we stayed there a few years after Riveria and as long as you stay in the tower bit (I think it's called the Manor Top - which you really should avoid, because is across the road) you should be ok. The rooms were bright and clean, only problem was that they aren't very soundproof, so you can hear what goes off in the corridors.
Oh and another gripe - if it hasn't been sorted by now, is that the lifts take an age to arrive at your floor. It's not much fun having to descent 23 flights of stairs with a hangover  we got fed up with waiting.:rotfl:
I can't comment on either Excalibur or Imperial as Luci has suggested I'm afraid, but others will be on soon with suggestions for you :)

    The Riv

CircusCircus attracts too many kids and is dirty. Both times the rooms were pristine at the Riviera.

I actually rather like the Riviera for its Old Vegas feel (and the fact they upgraded me from a priceline dirt cheap room into a one bedroom suite with balcony on my first stay -and gave me free rooms and food when I contacted them to thank them -on my next trip)

No noise -and the number of kids attracted to CircusCircus -noise could be a real issue.

Hi everyone! I posted a couple of days ago saying that I might be making an impromptu trip to Vegas at the beginning of April. If I could elaborate a little bit:

I have two friends in Germany who are going to Vegas from April 2nd - April 12th. They have booked a package which includes flights from Germany and 10 nights at Vdara.

They invited me to join them and say I am more than welcome to stay in their room. The room will have two King size beds, so it would involve two people sharing a bed but that's not a problem. And I would only have to pay EUR 20 per night for staying there (I offered this to them as I would feel bad staying there for free).

So if I decide to go, all I need to do is decide how long to go for in that window of 2nd-12th April, and book flights.

The best flights I've found so far are April 4th-10th through STA Travel. That was about GBP 530-535. Indirect but I don't mind about that.

The dates are good for me cos that's the Easter bank holiday weekend which means I'd only need to take 3 or 4 days off of work depending on how long I go for, which is ideal.

Does GBP 530-535 seem like an OK deal for indirect flights? Has anyone seen anything better? Add onto that 6 x 20 EUR for 6 nights at Vdara and I'm looking at about GBP 635 in total which isn't bad.

Incidentally, does anyone here have any experience with Vdara?

Thanks for any help that anyone might be able to offer :)

can't comment on the flights i'm afraid, but absolutely love the Vdara... have done a couple of trip reports of you search the 2011/2010 threads.

it doesn't have a casino and is kind of behind Aria and Bellagio... which means it's peaceful and about a 10min stroll/5min walk onto the Strip. it's really not as far as others seem to make out! the staff are amazing and the rooms are really nice... we've been to LV twice and stayed here both times. we found the most interesting way to get to the Strip was through Bellagio, which is connected by a special walkway. it takes you past Jean Philippe, the greatest coffee/pastry place in LV! :D

the pool is fairly small, but never jam packed and really nice, getting a lot of sun... rarely any kids there as it's more of a couples/business clientèle i think
