  • Those with Sky check out the PBS channel this weekend. There is a 2 part documentary about the history of Vegas.

    HOTELS
Another one here who likes a trip one evening of the holiday to " see the lights" at downtown.
Our first trip to Vegas,we got a bus downtown, and when we wanted to go back up the strip, stupidly walked to the downtown transportation centre ( like I say, first trip,so we didnt know any better )
And we had a dirty scruffy guy off his head on something, muttering to us all the way to the transportation centre.......only time we've ever felt intimidated in Vegas, and we have stayed at the strat once, and walked around there of an evening....well,from the bus stop,or monorail stop at Sahara.
I think the best advice for a good time downtown, can be summed up similar to the advice given to the two Americans leaving the slaughtered lamb pub,in American werewolf in london....."stick to the road"

I agree about staying downtown for at least 1 night, we did this last March on our 6th trip to LV, the Golden Nugget pool and rooms were great.

This March we arrive on 17th and are staying there again for 2 nights, hopefully we wont be too jetlagged to enjoy the St Patrick Day festivities.

There are some colourful characters  around so I'm also not too keen in venturing away from the canopy. "Beware the Beastie of the Moors "

We nearly walked to the bus/transportation terminal about 6 years ago, but last time the "ace" stopped at the Nugget and picked us up again so the routes have changed over the years if any first timers read this.

What do you think of 530GBP for a wraparound suite at Cosmo for 3 nights (thurs-sun) in August?

I know I could get a cheaper hotel but like Cosmo and thought it was a good price. Its for 4 (2ad,2ch).

No free cancellation and no free breakfast.

I've mentioned this before, but if anyone is planning (which you will be doing) on going up to Freemont Street, then I recommend having a go on that zipline they now have.

    It's brilliant :T

And it should now be all the way along, as it was only halfway when we did it, and the fella helping to run it said that it was running the entire length from Dec 2011.
BTW I agree with not straying too far from the canopy. We went in the daytime last year and it wasn't too bad (a couple tramps sleeping in the side of the pavements) But on a night sometimes you have to be a bit wary.

    VALUE FOR MONEY
At the moment I'm using 1.5 for the exchange rate - but you can check somewhere like xe.com ...thing is though, if you're booking a fully pre-paid deal direct with the hotel then you know you have locked the exchange rate in...if you're paying upon check out (like we normally do) the rate can obviously move (for or against you)...and depending on how you will pay, there may be exchange fees to consider too.

but for simple comparison purposes it will give you an idea.

Are the rates with the hotel going through one of the offers like hot deals, friends and family, etc?
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
  • there wasn't a deal for as far ahead as September. they have 20% off when you stay 2 or more nights, so I could maybe wait until something like that comes up to see what the price is like then.
  • Hi guys!

Just want to say thanks for everyone's help so far....:j

So we have booked some flights today...exciting!

    30th Aug: Depart 12.35 MAN - Arrive 14.50 LAS (10hrs 15 min) Virgin Flight

    13th Sept: Depart 21.20 LAX - Arrive 15.55 LHR (10 hrs 30 min)
    Virgin Flight

    £574p/p

Got flights from Flightcentre - I thought they were a good price for direct to be honest? Only thing is we have to get a train from LHR to Doncaster when we arrive home....

    Things still to do....

Book 5nts on central Vegas strip - As we are trying to budget, we would like to get a decent room ( we are gettin hitched after all!) for about £50 p/n - is this achievable? It's our 1st time in Vegas too! Do you think we'd get an upgrade - is it worth the risk?!

It seems no offers are around yet for our dates - 30th Aug - 4th Sept, but we wondered if we should book accom early cos of Labour Day (3rd Sept), or is it better to wait?

My brother and his wife have booked at Mirage 29th Aug - 5th Sept, is this central? Any downsides?

Book Wedding Chapel! - We like the look of Graceland for our comittment ceremony, cos of the Elvis thing! and seems reasonable price $199, has anyone else done it? What did you think?

Book flight from LAS - SFO for 4th Sept - Flightcentre wanted £92p/p - I thought this was a little steep? I know it's after Labour Day, so wondered if it's best to book early?

Are there any extra baggage fees / taxes that we need to consider with such internal US flights?

Book 4 nts in San Francisco - Room rates seem more expensive (expected), but can anyone recommend a decent hotel / b&b that's good value/location?

Hire a convertible to drive down the West Coast! - Gunna look at CarHire3000, as mentioned, but needed advice on best way to book....

We are hiring a car after we check out of San Fran on the 8th Sept, and spending 4nts along the coast (where, we just don't know! advice greatly received!), before arriving in LA for 1nt on 12th Sept.

So my question is...do we drop the car off before we check into our hotel in LA or do we leave it in the hotel car park and drive to LAX ourselves and drop it off there before boarding our return flight back home? - Just worried about the crazy LA driving! and we have never driven outside UK also!?!

    General aim of trip....

We wanted to use 2 weeks to have a blast in Vegas (get hitched!), possibly see the Grand Canyon (half a day), and the other half of the trip we wanted to see San Fran and some beach style places along the West Cali Coast, before having a day and night in LA - probably do the tours as we have heard that LA is a bit lousy TBH! But thought we can't go all that way and not see it!

Soooo....I'd be grateful for any tips / opinions on our trip, if we have enough time to do everything / Do you think we should be doing anything different etc?....I shall await the fountain of knowledge that is the trusty money saving experts! Thanks again!

    Cheers,

    Kath
