That's odd, I thought the pedestrianised area felt safe and there were none of the guys handing out calling cards for prostitutes that you seem to get every 20 yards on the strip.

some people much prefer it, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. The guys handing out call girl cards don't frighten me. But people lurking around, quite clearly homeless, drunk or on drugs would frighten me whether it is at home or the other side of the world.
Dont take it personally - as I said I worry a lot (and often manage to look at worst possible scenarios - I'm a little paranoid & pessimistic :D) & I just didn't feel comfortable in that general area late evening etc. I enjoyed the show of lights & will go again, but only during the day.
I think if you are going to Vegas for the first time then definitely check Downtown / Freemont Street out

for us, the thing about downtown is that under the canopy, it's fine (though I think you see a lot more down-and-out types there...maybe it's a smaller area, so it seems like more than on the strip)...but venture not too far away from the canopy, and it feels really dodgy...may not BE dodgy, but feels it...first time we went downtown we parked in some random parking garage and walked toward the lights...it didn't feel comfortable at all...whereas I think I would feel safe walking down the Strip with $100 bills taped to me.

The other thing for us, the casinos are much more squeezed in mostly...a lot less space to work with, so a lot less space between rows of machines/tables, etc...so it feels really cramped to me compared to most places on the strip (we sometimes feel the same about Bill's).

In general downtown doesn't have the 'wow' factor for us...I would like to stay a night down there sometime and see what we think then, but hubby has so far resisted. I do like being able to walk out of one casino and take a few steps and be in another...but so far, a couple of hours a trip and we're pretty much done with downtown.

I can understand why some would really like it - but I understand why some don't.

As for the !!!!!! slappers - the Strip is public property...I think there's some argument about Fremont Street being private property, so you have to have a license to solicit...or something like that...I know there have been lawsuits regarding stuff like this both on the Strip and downtown. I really couldn't care less about the !!!!!! slappers though...they're kind of part of Vegas to me now. :)

    CASINOS
The last time we were on FS we saw a homeless drug addict with a black eye clutching a small stuffed toy like it was a child, and 2 sub 5 foot mexicans dressed as batman fighting each other in some sort of turf war as Michael Jackson, Mr T, Kid Rock and Superman watched.

I quite like fremont street, we had 4 nights at the nugget last year and it was very enjoyable and is different to what goes on along the strip. Can appreciate how it may make some feel a bit uneasy though. We had our first 4 nights at the GN last year and during day 2 when jet lag had got the better of us we ventured down to the casino for a hot chocolate and a little blip on the slots. There wasnt a great deal of people knocking about but those that were down there resembled the cast of The Walking Dead. Had one guy sit down next to me on the slots who was clearly smacked off his nut and being a bit of a pest, and couldnt understand anything i was saying. Mainly down to him being in the state he was, and to me deliberately going 'double cockney'. Eventually he got fed up and left and there was no need to get angry or rude. Another one then found my missus and was getting a bit funny, so i went and sat by her, luckily at the same point there was a security guy who looked over, I caught his eye and gave him a nod and he soon moved the pest on (the guy, not my missus).

OK, I've had a look round but can't see the answer to what is probably a dumb question(s)

    Restaurant.com vouchers

1 Are they not date limited? Couldn't see a "Use by date" when I did a dummy booking. Going to Vegas in June, so if I can buy cheap dining now I will.:D

    2. Are they for the total bill so a party of four use the one coupon or do you each have to have a coupon (I suspect the former)

    Cheers

No expiry - they used to be good for a year but they changed that awhile back.

And the specific vouchers give the specific terms - but in all cases (general r.com T&Cs) it's "Only one (1) Restaurant-Specific Gift Certificate may be redeemed per party, per month, per restaurant, even if the party is seated at separate tables and/or receives more than one check."

The specific terms for a voucher will be shown as well - may be minimum spend of $50, or minimum 2 entrees, etc...some will apply an automatic gratuity of xx% based on the full value. Some include alcohol in the total minimum spend, some don't... Some restaurants have higher value vouchers for higher minimum spends which can be great with a bigger party...we had a $75 off $150 voucher at Envy and my in-laws were amazed we could possibly have that much of a discount...but with just my hubby and I, we never would have cleared $150.

I like Fremont Street for its Old Vegas feel -but wouldn't wander off the main drag too far. Like Ferf I quite fancy a couple of days staying there but have never got around to it.
