  • managers like ambiguity in delivery.

Not only in delivery. Managers in most places I've worked are like this as it gives them an easy get out if/when something goes wrong or targets are not met.
theres a lot of may, consider etc in your post.
however you don't know the guidlines or even if they are stipulated
    I know.
The reason for the many "mays, considers etc," is because I don't know what the guidelines say and I was simply stating my personal opinion that a doorstep shouldn't be considered a safe place.

I was going to order a TV from Play or Amazon, but since both use Yodel I decided not to. How the hell they can use a company with such bad rep is beyond me.

No, but if someone was determined to leave a package on my doorstep then I would prefer if they at least made some sort of an effort to attemp to put it out of sight of people passing by.

I would prefer it even more if they didn't leave it there in the first place, but this is something that I may not have any say in.

    £££££s.
As long as customers keep ordering from them, they will use the most cost effective method of delivery.
Amazon are one of the cheapest online retailers around, and they didn't get to be like this by spending more than is needed.

But still in breech of what Yodel state that they will do with an undelivered package.

I don't know of any sensible person who would consider that a doorstep in view of anyone passing by would be considered a safe place.

which is completely irrelevant. If the customer states that they can leave it on the doorstep then the 'safe place' policy doesn't come into effect.

    Why irrelevent?
You might not agree with what I stated, but as it's my opinion it is as relevent as yours.
If people are willing to have packages left on their doorstep then good luck to them. This doesn't mean that I have to do the same or think that it's a sensible thing to do.

If "the customer" (the seller) arranged for something to be left on the doorstep and it was stolen or damaged, all I would do is to reclaim my payment so they would be the ones who lose out.

it's irrelevant if the customer authorises them to leave it on the door step. I didn't say your opinion was irrelevant but the safe place policy; if the customer / sender says it's ok to leave on a doorstep, sling over a garden gate etc then that over-rides a general company policy if the recipient isn't in

Over on parcelforum, they're suggesting that Amazon may move at least partially from using Yodel to MyHermes.

  • It might happen but unless MyHermes will be doing the deliveries for a higher unit price than Yodel, I can't see it making too much of a difference. (And I'm assuming that Yodel are cheaper than MyHermes, which may be an incorrect assumption).

If Amazon negotiate the contract for an extremely low price per piece for delivery, then I think that the current service offered by MyHermes may well reduce in quality as they have to cut costs to make a profit.

From what it says on the other forum, MyHermes may be able to undercut Yodel. But as far as I can see by reading between the lines, MyHermes may promise the earth in terms of deliveries, which are then passed off to couriers making 50p gross (before fuel and other costs) per parcel. And service may be even worse. MyHermes itself doesn't bear the costs for a large proportion of the delivery of a parcel, the couriers themselves do.

Courier delivery services in the UK need a proper kick up the bum. There's got to be something better than the service we've got now.
