  • Renewal quote at £200 with Tesco, checked online and same cover available for £127 with Tesco. Called them today and they renewed for the £127 with no real explanation of why I was quoted so much higher initially.

Not impressed and the temptation to move was quite strong but I stuck with them in the end.

They generally have offers for new customers to reel you in then hoik your premium the following year - as you have found, by not renewing you can in many cases actually get a much cheaper quote from your existing insurer just by coming back as a "new" customer.

I'm a new customer every year, even if if it means going back to the same insurer.

I have received a quote via e-mail from Tesco home insurance that I never requested.

The cost for Finest home and contents insurance is quoted as £281.40 including online discount. - Finest Cover - GBP £281.40 annual premium
This price includes your online discount
(Inclusive of insurance premium tax where applicable
    )

Does anyone know if this includes the 50% discount or will it be half of this cost?

Cost to reinsure with my existing insurer (Barclays including -£52.27 2nd yr cashback) is £154.73 with £75 excess with acc cover for both Bldgs and Contents. Will probably go with this but just curious?

I've just booked out my contents insurance for my flat with Legal & General. I used MoneySupermarket first to get a few quotes and was happy with a price around £70, seemed pretty good. I'm very time pressed so finding the absolute cheapest rate is not so important to me (yes, MSE heretic!) as just getting it sorted reasoanbly quickly.

I then followed the MS link to the Legal & General site, fillied in their details to get the same quote again, fine I thought. But because I have a lodger in my flat who isn't a family member, I couldn't book it online and had to phone up the company. I tried a couple of other companies but had the same problem.

When I called L&G, I spent 20 minutes answering all the questions, then was given a price of £176! Apparently just having a lodger had more than doubled it. I took it on, but now have 14 days to cancel if I wish.

I know the theory on buying such things is to compare quotes, but if I have to ring every company up it will take all day. I presume this is a common problem as having a lodger in a flat is hardly remarkable, so my question is whether there are ways that anyone knows to get around this so that I can compare a few prices and not be ripped off.

    Thanks.

I've just been struggling with this one, also.
    Renewal cost with Sainsbury's 195.00
I've run around on Confused and they all come in at about that. Different excess, slightly diff levels of cover etc.

Tesco's is the same 200 quid, or thereabouts. However, shouldn't that be 100 quid, with the current 50%. Or are they really trying to say that the online price includes that and at any other time of the year it would cost me nearly 400 quid from them, to insure a one bed flat!
I've even gone through to the buy page and there's nothing about "Your 50% discount". I don't get it, or I'm smelling a rat, somewhere?

With 50% off they should be beating everybody, surely...

Yes I smell a rat also! I got a quote of £400 for the "Finest" insurance. With a 50 % discount this would be £200, and as such would be my cheapest quote. However when I went to buy I got as far as a the entering card details page and there was still no mention of the discount. I didn't go any further because £400 is definitely not good value!

Can anyone who has bought insurance with Tesco recently comment on where (if) their 50% discount was applied?

    Cheers
    Andrew

I don't think there is, but would love to find there's an easier way. I'm looking for travel insurance for pre existing medical conditions, and have spent the best part of 2 days phoning round for quotes and checking online. I will say on the plus side that it's been well worth it, as quotes have varied from £715, to £204.
    Good luck.

    My ten bob's worth!:p

As mentioned at the very start of this thread you really have to watch out for the cheapest insurance types not covering you for a lot of high risk accidents. Many policies only cover accidental damage electronics and bathroom fittings and simply do not cover damage to furnishings. Some, more so than ever these days, don't even cover for floods so watch out.

Even high net worth insurance doesn't protect many items unless they have been valued. The majority of these policies require any item worth over £5000 for be valued in order to gain full protection. You can get free valuations from some specialist companies. Even if you have to pay it would be well worth it if the dreaded were to happen.

There's always the argument that insuring goods which depreciate is at times folly, there's trains of though for and against this approach, I guess it just depends on the situation.

Just liked to say, I used all the comparison tables mentioned on this site and also went directly to a couple of places like norwich union direct.

For me, I found that Co-op insurance was one of the cheapest and most well known companies. I therefore took out my insurance with them. Came to £162 p/y for building and contents, extra accidental damage and there so called home emergency malarky, £100 excess for both. To add this bonus, quidco will give me £70. All in all, £92 per year. No bad a deal for a person in their 30s. The nearest most reliable home insurance was HSBC (norwich union) at £240 p/y with £50 cashback.

Just to say, I used moneysupermarket and they listed some companies I never heard of with excess of £250 and £140 per year.

I phoned up Co-op and they told me no matter who it is, every home insurance automatically has 30% no claims inserted into the quote. So not a bad bargain.

This does not mean that this will be cheaper for you but I suggest you try this as no comparison tables use this.

No a bad find for me and I rate this hot!

Hi I,m new to this so please forgive me if this information in the wrong place.
I have just received my renewal quote from Northern rock for £416.52 for building and content. I,ve had my morgage with them so I,ve just kept renewing each year. I called to cancel the policy and they have told me I have to sign a declartion to cancel and pay £25.00 for administration. Can they do that? Has this happened to anyone else?

Funnily enough, I was clearing out my files yesterday and came across letters between my mortgage Company & myself from many years ago, when insurance companies were just becoming very competitive and I wanted to change my insurance from them (which was very expensive) to another company. They said they had to approve the policy first for which they would charge me £30! I wrote a polite letter telling them I found this charge unacceptable, they wrote back a very apologetic letter telling me that they would refund the charge.
So nothing ventured - nothing gained! ;)
if i had known then what i know now
