I have received a quote via e-mail from Tesco home insurance that I never requested.

The cost for Finest home and contents insurance is quoted as £281.40 including online discount. - Finest Cover - GBP £281.40 annual premium
This price includes your online discount
(Inclusive of insurance premium tax where applicable)

Does anyone know if this includes the 50% discount or will it be half of this cost?

Cost to reinsure with my existing insurer (Barclays including -£52.27 2nd yr cashback) is £154.73 with £75 excess with acc cover for both Bldgs and Contents. Will probably go with this but just curious?

It seems like Tesco quote very highly, and their basic insurance doesn't seem to be worth having. I received a quote from Saga for £174 for house & contents but the Tesco finest, which covered pretty much what I wanted ( plus 'consierge' - what on earth is that?) but quoted almost £300 with a £100 excess. I'm hoping that the 50% reduction means it will come to nearer £150, but there is no mention of the discount in the quote. I have never used the quidco site, but certainly like the idea of zero insurance plus being paid!
Barclays were also trumpeting a 50% discount, but found their quote to be quite high and the 50% only applied to the contents insurance, which was barely worth having!

I can't see that it makes any difference so long as the premium has been paid. I have retired, but it never occurred to me to tell my insurance Company. I had paid in one lump sum, so I couldn't see that it made any difference. I am about to re new my insurance so all my details will be brought up to date anyway.

im sorry if this is the wrong place but my parents need to claim for a burst water pipe in loft, they have never had to claim before and my mum is panicing as beds, walls, pictures, a computer etc are ruined. paint is peeling off the door frames and clothes are still in the wardobes wet. they have been told to stay out of the room due to potential asbestos so cannot recover anything. my mum is very upset and is hoping someone here can advise. she is worried they wont pay out for the damaged bedding or beds ;et alone the computer or clothes. she gets the impression they will not pay as things can dry out but considering there is a nursing chair (i used when stayed last year for my baby and planned to with the next one) and baby chairs etc she is worried about mould appearing later when its too late.

is this is the wrong place can someone please move it as she is in a flap and i cant help her. thank you
A happy wife, and mum to 2 lovely little boys :j

I am sorry to hear that, there is no point in worrying though.

If you mum has both buildings and contents, the claim will be met under the Escape of Water peril, for both the damage to the building and damage to any contents.

With regards the reinstatement- the chairs and bedding etc wont just be allowed to 'dry out'. If they have been affected by your water any decent loss adjuster would have them professionally cleaned/dry cleaned as a first option- for things like furniture there are firms that specialise in this area. If this doesnt work then they should be replaced (although given the type of item I would just cash settle them)

Asbestos is a nasty word that gets people scared- the truth is that it has been succesivly downgraded in health and safety legislation and it really isnt as bad as people imagine- yes, if you breathe it in for years then it will do some damage but a couple of hours should be fine.

The cost of fixing/replacing the pipe won't be covered.

Whoever comes out from the insurance company will take note of all the damage caused by the water and take pictures too.

If the property is older than 1999 and has artex ceiling, then before the ceiling is worked on an Asbestos test will probably be done. However, it is only when this is being worked on, i.e., removing the artex etc that it is dangerous. I'd definitely be going in and trying to salvage itmes (this is said not knowing how badly damaged the ceiling is, is it hanging down etc?).
My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.

Direct Line home insurance with 50% off etc

Anyone think this is a bad deal? Considering I need the works (accidental damage, possessions away from home, had a previous claim recently) a quote of £256 for the year seems pretty good to me. This covers laptops etc and seems a really good deal all round.

So would that make it £128? or is £256 the half price deal? I have been looking around for House & Contents insurance and have found some 'good' deals until you add 'accidents in the home' and then it shoots up by around £70 :-( I am in the process of going through the house clearing out, re-decorating, having new carpet put down and having the loft boarded out. So would like to be protected against any accidents. Have not claimed for many years and have accepted that it is not worth making small claims, I simply want to be covered for most eventualities. The best I have come across so far is Barclays who are offering £55 cash back, which would bring down my premium to £170. Anybody found anything to better this?

Is it ok to have contents insurance with one company and building insurance with someone else (should it work out cheaper), or do they both have to be with the same company?
