mornin' all...
We're completing the purchase of a new build property within the next four weeks, and now its time to sort out insurance. Problem is that our postcode doesn't officially exist yet so its proving impossible to scour quotes on the comparison sites. Do i really have to ring up all the companies to get quotes? And if so, would i be able to haggle internet prices and quidco cashback somehow?! Oh man, i'm not looking forward to spending a weekend on the phone!! thanks in advance

Don't believe u-switch's claim of beating any quote by 10%.
They have refused to beat my policy on a technicality. That they cannot offer the same contents excess. Mine is £50 and they can only match £100. Yes, that's correct, I have to increase my excess!! What a joke.0 -
I wouldnt worry about the excess, would you really claim for anything under £500-£1000?
I dropped my laptop and a replacment was £1600, Ive never had a claim in 25 years so worth claiming (£200 excess). The assessor who came out to inspect the damage told me that every claim is recorded and a history of claiming can go against you.
Worth knowing that they dont give you cash, usually vouchers or a direct replaecment.
Some people are so stupid that they make a lot of claims, then get refused a renewal, so they go elsewhere and tick the box, "no previous claims". What they find next time they claim is that their new insurer refuses to pay out, which would be a bit of a sickener if it was a legitimate big claim!
It seems some people think it is their payback right to claim for something!Life is about appreciating what you have got, not getting what you want.:j

Hi, My insurance is due for renewal at the beginning of December. Unfortunately we have had to claim TWICE this year!!! One in January 2008 when the garden shed was broken into (2 bikes and a hedge trimmer were stolen - total approx £300.00) The second claim was in June 2008 when a bird flew into the kitchen window and we had the double glazed pane was replaced (approx£100) Since I started looking around for new quotes, it's either extortionate or i'm treated like a leper. Help - I don't know where to look next for a 'reasonable' quote.0

A year ago we, my sister and I, took out a contents insurance with Barclays Bank, after being told, "Dont worry you're covered for every eventuallity."
Well last week our fridge/freezer broke down. i.e the fridge has died while the freezer is working overtime. My sister phoned Barclays and was told, "Sorry but you are not covered for wear and tear or for break down, you are only covered for accidental damage."
Naturally we complained and then we we're told, "Well at least the contents of your fridge are covered, tell them that you had lobster and oysters in it."
We have now put in a formal complaint on both matters and are waiting for them, the bank, to get back to us. PLEASE, if you have a Barclays contents insuance, CHECK YOUR POLICY!!! We were miss-sold ours and are taking steps to...GET EVEN!!!
You bought an insurance policy for your home and contents not a maintenance contract - check the facts before you buy - you were not ripped off0 -

Just obtain the nearest postcode to your new house and get the quotes on that. Then call the insurance company with the most competitive quote to verify the price0 -

Just to make you aware here, sometimes it is better not to claim for minimal amounts like this. After you pay the excess, and then consider your future permiums, you will probably be out of pocket. My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.0 -

Home Insurance Renewal
I received my renewal quote from Tesco (£480) which was significantly up from last year when i received the first-timers 50% discount. I went on to confused.com and also to the Tesco site direct. The quote from Tesco's direct was £283 - they are doing 50% discount again this year (thanks to MSE for pointing this out). I also had cheaper quotes from other insurers as low as £200. I called Tesco, asked if they would match the 50% discount (figured if they did not i would go elsewhere) and they matched a quote from Privilege of £275 - they could do this as they both have the same underwriters. So, same insurance, same terms, £200+ "saved", i.e. not spent!
Hope it helps someone.0
