    I am not happy:mad:

When I went online this morning it was £85 and tracked at £85. Just checked and it has changed to £25.

Any advice ? I know cashback isn't guaranteed but I did the deal and had confirmation when it was £85. How do I stand legally ?

    Have decided to cancel policy.

Who thought insurance was straight forward - I've confused myself totally. If you live in a semi-detached house do you have to take into consideration e-building costs for next door for instance if you have a fire and it spreads (a point my Dad raised)? The market value of my house is approx £220,000 but my current insurers have only got the rebuild cost at £135,000, I know the rebuild cost is lower but I think it is a little too low? Any views would be appreciated.

I just checked my rebuild costs here:
    http://abi.bcis.co.uk

It seems fairly comprehensive, and checks on type of house etc.

Having read through Martin's article and tried all the screen scrapers etc I've had great problems and I would be most grateful for any advice.

We (dh, myself and our two 18+ children) are currently renting a three bed house (private unfurnished). Our contents insurance with the Prudential is due for renewal on 1st October and they've quoted us £201 for £40,000 worth of cover.

When I used Martin's article to try and cut costs I did the valuation room by room and realised that we would be woefully underinsured as between us we have about 5,000 books (we're bookoholics and have been collecting for 30+ years)! The books vary wildly in price (£4-£45 new) and many have been bought second hand but to replace them all new I would estimate would cost around £50,000 (averaging £10 per book). I know it's daft but I'd never really thought of the cost of replacing them all before... we have very little else of any great value (obviously all our money has gone on buying books not furniture, jewelry etc :D ). However, if we add the books to my (generous) estimate for the other contents it totals about £80,000.

I was hoping to use Martin's advice to find the best deal and then go through Quidco for a decent amount of cashback but many of the insurance companies won't even consider insuring us for £80,000, even though the only real risk for the books is fire damage as any single book getting accidentally damaged wouldn't be worth claiming for and I can't see thieves carrying 5,000 books away!

I think the combination of renting and high total value is making it difficult. NFU said they'd insure us if we sent them a list of every book we own! Of the ones I've found that will insure us for this amount and give a bit of cashback through Quidco (Endesleigh and Post Office) they want £230- £250. The only one any cheaper (who no are no longer on Quidco) is Privilege and they've quoted £170.

If anyone can help me find a way of getting the price down a bit more I'd be grateful.

  • Hi,

We are renting a flat for only 6 months, and then hoping to move elsewhere. How does this work in terms of insurance as all the policies are for one year? Do you transfer it to the new place when you change homes?

    Thank you
  • Hi,

Does anyone know the best insurers or how to get the best prices on buildings insurance for converted houses (2 flats - one ground and one first floor) please. The entrances are separate, not communal.

I cannot use the standard online comparison sites as far as I'm aware, nor take advantage of quidco sadly

    Any advise/help much appreciated
  • I had a similar problem with my insurance as it wasn't a regular straight forward policy.

My house is of non standard construction and the online comparison sites don't really cover for that or non standard policies. What I done was done a few quotes online for normal construction as a ball park figure and then phoned them up.

For normal construction Direct Line where the cheapest but wouldn't cover my requirements. I ended up with the AA (they have a specialist department who deal with non standard requirements) and they still gave me an online discount as my original quote was online even though I took it out over the phone and they discounted again as I was a member of the AA also.

I found some of the insurance companies where quoting me cheaper but weren't actually quoting the construction correctly even though I was advising them of every detail, so be wary that they take the correct details otherwise the policy will be void.

    Hope this helps
  • Hi
Don't know if this question has been asked before.
I am wanting to get Home Insurance quotes by going to the Comparison Websites and then to Quidco--- will clearing your cookies delete the "trail" left by your postcode (which you have to put in)???
Do the Insurance Companies keep some kind of "trail" of the quotes given --against a post code and then award the commission to the first Comparison Site used?
    Thanks Dave
  • Hi. This has also happened to me. I have a mortgage with the Bank of Ireland. If you do not insure with their chosen household insurance which I have not this year they will charge £25 admin fee. Can they do this?
