Congrats! A great deal!
Just thought I'd emphasise the drawbacks of customer loyalty these days. I saved 50% (£270) off my home and contents insurance by NOT just accepting Tesco's 'automatic' renewal quote sent in a letter. Instead, I went online and got a much cheaper quote as a new customer. I then phoned them and they agreed I could claim their 'online discount'. Easy peasy! Now... how to prevent the missus spending all the £270 we saved...

It depends on the type of policy that you have. If you have a policy that
provides for full replacement, then you have a contractual period of, I believe, six months, in which to repair or replace the damaged items. Otherwise theinsurance company does not have to pay you the amount that they withheld from your settlement for depreciation.

Hi All
This is my first time posting on this thread so please be kind! Lol
Basically our home insurance is due for renewal in November. Now me being the completely un-organised person that I am doesnt have a clue where any of the documents are, nor have we been sent a renewal quote or anything. Just know that for buildings and contents insurance we currently pay £31.67 per month.
My question is this............is this expensive? Do you think we could get it cheaper? We are in Northern Ireland, not sure if that makes a difference. Also can someone give me some pointers as to what I am actually looking for? Went onto one website to get a quote and it asked me about re-build value?! Needless to say I promptly closed that down!
Any advice would be great
Linz xoxoxIts hard to wait around for that something you know may never happen, but its harder to give up when you know its everything you ever wanted.........
People tell me Im going the wrong way..............when its simply a way of my own!0 -

Also if you are paying monthly, over the year you'll probably be paying a lot more than the equivalent annual premium.
There is a rebuilding calculator somewhere on this thread.0 -
After 15yrs claim free I am currently involved in 2 insurance claims. One motor, the other household.
My motor claim has been handled very well, although they are dragging their feet about reclaiming excess, but that was not helped by the person who hit me. ( I was at traffic lights behind another car waiting to turn right. The general consensus from the police was that the person who hit me sped up coming through the lights , hit me in the back then shunted me into the car infront) parking around the corner, giving her right name and address but wrong car registration. After driving past her house I got the right licence plate and it was discovered that she is not insured to drive the car. Thankfully the car is owned by her step father who has admitted that she had access to keys / car etc (otherwise she would have been charged with theft) so we can claim from his insurance company.
I am insured through esure and feel they handled very well. Within 1 hr of reporting the accident I had a hire car arranged and they had arranged collection of my vehicle. It was written off and after some negotiation I received a very good settlement, although at this point minus my excess. I have replaced the vehicle and amendment was made to my existing policy.
My household insurance has however been a nightmare. We discovered our bedroom carpet to be wet. A leak was found to be coming from the ensuite toilet. The floor was not wet in the ensuite as we have ceramic tiles. After investigation we have established that the leak was probably ongoing over a period of time but going down the wall down into the living room wall and under the living room floor. The laminate in the living room was worn and because of this they are saying we should have noticed the damage sooner. Even though there was no water evident other than the bedroom floor.
They originally asked for 3 quotes, despite me saying I didnot know the extent of the damage. I was thinking of damage to the bathroom floor and was worried floorboards might need replacing.
A builder friend recommended getting a drying company to assess the damage myself. I did this and presented this to the insurance company they eventually got drying equipment in. But this was after 3 weeks of the property being wet. The builder visited us and admitted he is being sued by the Health and Safety Executive (my husband works for HSE and his pass was out on the table where he always leaves it) In order to dry the property they lifted my floor! They have taken a scraping from my ceiling and are now saying they are denying the claim because we should have seen the damage sooner. How can you see water damage when theres no water? The water coming down the wall dried into the plaster so the wall was not visibly wet.
The original inspector discovered mould and fungus but said that only takes a few days to appear so could have well developed in the time we sorted the leak to the time of obtaining reports.
We are currently waiting for a reply from the insurance supervisor and have already lodged a formal complaint because of the way that things have been handled.0 -
Hi
my chap has been buying his buildings and contents insurance via his mortgage provider - Skipton - since he took out his mortgage some 18 years ago. His renewal price this year was almost £800 / 2 bed semi valued below 100k (cheeky cheeky terrible people)
He was told when he took out his mortgage that he was required to have their insurance as he was taking an endownment route for repayment. He has continued with the arrangement since then. He gets a renewal quote in with his annual statement, which he has never really understood. He has never been required to sign and accept anything etc.
On two occassions during this 18 years he had to rely on state benefit when out of work, his parter left him with 3 children etc. Obviously his lender was aware of this situation but still didnt think to offer him advice about possible cheaper products elsewhere.
On at least two occassions he has questioned the amount of money going out of his bank account to skipton and was told it was his contribution to the mortgage to top up the state help. This was in fact unture, we now know that skipton had added his insuranceand mortgage together and collected it in one direct debit... so, when they told him the £87 a month was for his mortgage they mis informed him as £78 of this was in fact his monthly insurance premium.
It took him almost two weeks of calls, questions and letters to get accurate information from the recently. Each time he spoke to somebody they told him different informaion. He eventually cancelled at a cost of £25 and got another adequate insurnce for £678 per year cheaper.
The question is HAS he any redress, surely this is very unfair trading. Who is to say he can read, understand the terms and conditions etc.
Any advice thanks

Don't know if this question has been asked before.
I am wanting to get Home Insurance quotes by going to the Comparison Websites and then to Quidco--- will clearing your cookies delete the "trail" left by your postcode (which you have to put in)???
Do the Insurance Companies keep some kind of "trail" of the quotes given --against a post code and then award the commission to the first Comparison Site used?
Thanks Dave
If you used your correct name address etc, then the insurance company can trace you that way and you may not get your cashback if you used a comparason site first.
Its best to use a false name and address but same postcode when using comparason sites.0 -
I've just switched Home Insurance once again. My policy starts tomorrow. Buildings & contents this year cost me £117 with Lloyds TSB.
Oh...one other thing. Did it through quidco. I now have £120 tracked from doing this.
My insurance cost £0 this year, there paying me this time!
Hi, quick question, my home insurance expires tomorrow (3rd Nov) but next February I will rent my property for the unforseeable future and will rent my house from then. Point is I will need Landlords Insurance - do I re-insure from tomorrow with Landlords? - and in any case is any insurance cheaper through a cash back site such as Quidco for example - I would greatly appreciate any readers comments or help on this matter - thank you very much Andy0 -
I think that with home insurance you have to have regard to the quality and good reports on the company as well as the price. Do a search under the name and see how often the company is involved in obtaining CCJs or starting bankruprcy proceedings. The companies that are going down those routes will be the ones looking at the small print to wriggle out of meeting claims. Unfortunately these are often the bigger companies.0

Seems like everyone has a beef with insurers (I put them on a par with traffic wardens for the most part).
Any ideas why Royal Sun Alliance felt the need to take eight credit checks on my file? I only requested a quote (for both H&C) via Confused, and their quote was exorbitant anyway. Eight checks seemed excessive, although I know they underwrite for other brokers, I was a bit stunned to see them (and on my partners credit file too!).
@ Andy: why do you need Landlords insurance? I've never heard of this - when I rented I only had contents cover. What does your tenancy agreement say?Sealed Pot Challenge number 298, up yours HSBC!0
