The Insurance Companies have us all tied up, I couldn't sleep at night without insurance, we pay up, and then hope that nothing will happen! I pay extra for accidental damage, as I feel that the basic insurance doesn't really cover very much. Due to financial circumstances, a neighbour cut out her insurance, then we had extreme weather conditions where our homes suffered damage...... is anyone prepared to take the risk? :eek:if i had known then what i know now0

I phoned a broker for a quote but when they heard how close to water I was none of the undewriters would accept the risk even though I've made no claim for 25 years. I'm tempted to phone others and say I live in a non flood-risk area but then I suppose that any claim for flood damage will invalidate the insurance. I'm also a bit fed up at having being insured by the same company for 25 years with no claims that the premium has rocketed the last couple of years - this year it is £460, surely they should be rewarding loyal customers.0

to TBone - have you tried getting a quote online from your current insurance company as if you were a new customer. I did this last year with my car insurance and ended up getting a quote £140 cheaper with the same company - Liverpool Victoria - that I was already with.0

Hello!
I am looking for contents insurance quotes and am confused by the bit where it asks about items insured away from the home. What items are included in this? Is it just the likes of cameras or does it cover your credit and debit cards?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Why have they cancelled the Insurance, it is common for Insurers to keep the policy running and change the Policy Holders name to"The executors of the late (Insert name)" You will find it difficult to find an insurer wishing to offer cover for the property as it is npo doubt unoccupied.

I've followed the MoneySaving Expert's advice in obtaining Home Insurance and saved £100 by haggling.
The current insurer (company A) wanted almost £360 to renew but they were no longer competitive as I found a quote for £325 from another insurer (company.
I then started haggling...
Company A they said they would reduce their quote from £360 to £277.
Back on the phone to company B who said they could reduce their quote from £325 to £270.
Company A then said they could not go lower than £277 but could throw in a £10 Marks and Spencer voucher, effectively a reduction to £267.
Company B said they could go to £260 and also include pedal cycle cover for free.
Company B won the business - and I saved £100.0 -
just to say, i am so annoyed! decided to shop around for renewal on my barclays home & contents cover to see if i could get a better deal than the £280 renewal. i sure did - from Barclays on confused.com! they quoted £208 for the same insurance, plus £55 cashback, so this has saved me £125 in total this year. I am happy to be saving so much, but imagine if i hadnt switched, the robbing swines!0

Hi everyone, I'm new to this website and desperate for help so hope there is someone who can advise me.
I have a leasehold 2 bed maisonette and since moving in (2006) have been advised by my management company that we have to have buildings insurance supplied by a specific company (which incidently is part of their organisation). This has cost £270 for the year 2007/08 and £350 for 2008/09. We pay for our own contents insurance through our bank/mortgage provider and are unable to benefit from joint insurance deals.
I believe our Buildings Insurance is way above average and not sure if I'm being taken advantage of/conned. Is one obliged to have buildings insurance at all if in a leasehold property. Also what are my rights in sourcing my own insurance provider?
I pay ground rent in addition to the insurance plu service charges (although we recieve no service/maintenance as such).
Any advice or experience would be appreciated.

As your property is Leasehold you are obliged to have buildings cover on it, this should not just cover your property but the other property as well.
You are paying a lot of money though bearing in mind the other property would also in theory be paying around the same for you. Is part of your roof flat as this tends to increase the premium is it is over 25% of the roof area
You should ask for a copy of the policy schedule and then ask the same Insurer (The management agents tend to use large companies such as Norwich Union, Axa & Zurich etc) for a quotation to cover your property and the other property. Hopefully this will come out cheaper than you are paying, if this is the case it may be worth joining forces with the other property owner and telling the managing agent you want the same deal at the renewal date.0
