    My first challenge! :j
In the past Ive been a bit of a bu88er for throwing food away, but no more!!:o We had SOO much stuff left after Christmas, a combination of what Id bought/made, and what friends had brought round when visiting. So, New Years Eve found me gutting the fridge, clearing out all stuff which sadly had gone WAY past its best (or even second best, to be honest!) so Im starting with a clean slate, so to speak. Im aiming for less than £10 throw-away in January, which still seems a heck of a lot, but Ive got to start somewhere!
So far today Ive made made Curried Fridge Bottom Soup, with a tin of Chick Peas lobbed in for good luck. Ive also simmered down all the peelings, and other bits and bobs I found, and made a lovely stock which Im portioning up and freezing. Tonight tea is leftovers from last night, and as for my lunch - a couple of spoons of Hubbys soup that he took for pack-up with a few odd bits of pasta, stirred into this a sachet I got from Co-op, Curried Tuna sandwich filling! Sound pretty weird, but I piled it onto a slice of toast and it was lovely!! The best part of it? The Tuna sachet thingy should have been about a quid but I got 2 for 12p each!!:D
Good luck to everyone who is joining in with the challenge!
Don't put it DOWN, put it AWAY! ;)

I can't find the old thread either - suspect it's deleted since my info shows that I've been thanked in more posts than I've apparently made, so posts must have been deleted somewhere. Hope it hasn't, there was useful info in there.

This is odd, because it's still there, honest :)

I am in again this time, am aiming to throw away as little as possible. Have to admit to throwing away few salad leaves (30p) and very sad looking grapes (50p), but apart from that have been good. On Sunday I made pie from lo turkey, gammon and leeks with sauce made from lo cream and white wine, there was so much filling I made extra pastry and have frozen for another meal next week. Last night we had tuna pasta bake with left over tuna (DD opened a big tin to make a sandwich) veg from bottom of fridge and topped with half packet of lo crisps and some various grated cheese from christmas cheeseboard. Feeling very pleased with myself, last year I probably would have thrown it all away. Also noticed on another pot of cream it says you can freeze it when whipped so will be getting whisk out later so I can freeze it for another day, may even make some ice cream with lo fruit. Oh and DD and DS had lo pasta bake for packed lunch.
    Thoughts to all. Mrs D.

I've done quite well today using LO roast chicken, various bits and pieces of veggies made a chickeny thing. Served with jacket spuds and grated cheese. Enjoyed by all of us, even the kids.

Does anyone have suggestions of what to do with softish satsumas? I don't really eat them as they give me heartburn since I was pregnant with DS. The kids normally eat loads but think these haven't been used up as there's just been so many other yummy snack options over Christmas! I have about 8 satsumas, two oranges, and two oranges with no zest on to use up!
I have some freezer space so could freeze but don't know if I'd need to do something with them first ie. cooked in a cake them frozen? I need to make some cake/snacks for the kids lunchboxes so suggestions to use these that way would also be welcome.

half an onion that had turned green, one lonely carrot that wasn't even fit for a snowman's nose, and a leek that was so dessicated that it had curled itself into a circle!!! Baaaaad Pixie!

Hi, Thought I'd join in for the new year. I already do the challenge really, but I thought I'd stop lurking and join the discussion!

MummyEm, how about marmalade? I made some before Christmas with a load of satsumas/clementines, a leftover grapefruit and a lemon (only used the clementine/satsuma peal in the final pot though). Worked a treat!
Or if you want less cooking you could make sorbet with them perhaps :)

  • Might be about to throw my first stuff away. Just found half a pack of shortcrust pastry in the fridge, which is 6 days past its date.
Looks and smells ok, but does anyone know if it's safe to use?

if its not grey and blotchy its fine
    even then its ......
well fine really....the key here is you are from generations of people who have been able to identify off food by just these criteria

you have been genetically selected as someone able to identify things not to eat - otherwise you would be dead...trust you
not the person obliged by law to print EU compliant food lables !!!!!

hairy bread ( flour baccilli) is penecillin so you migh infact cure something?
    feeling itchy?
