Going to have to throw away the home made veggie meal (Migraine last night so didn't eat and won't be edible tonight), probably about 50p worth and the bread and butter pudding we made the other night will also have to go, guessing at about 75p for that
Must try harder!!!0 -
threw away some blueberries
under 90p?? but cant remember so ill just put 90p
only bought them a ew days ago, they tasted awful0 -
We got the ASDA delivery not long ago, asked for a couple of onions and ended up with a 1kg bag! Luckily OH's mum will be having some or else they probably would have been wasted. Asked for 400g of broccoli and got over 1kg. Might give away some of this too....Savings £8,865.22 £/15,000 Aiming to save enough for a house deposit.0

A 1kg bag of onions lasts us a month without them turning, just poke a couple of holes in the bag and store them in a cool dark place.0 -
Yup, onions last forever - just take them out of the plastic and store them somewhere cool and dark. Broccoli not so much - but if you've any space in your freezer, you could chop some up and blanch it? The stalks are edible tooGrocery challenge September 2022: £230.04/£200

My OH doesn't like many onions so at his rate of eating onions these could probably last a year and I think they'd be a bit manky by then...Savings £8,865.22 £/15,000 Aiming to save enough for a house deposit.0

I threw away some leftover curry tonight. It was just horrid and watery after I reheated it. I left it, but just haven't fancied finishing it, so it's gone in the bin unfortunatelyNinja Saving Turtle0

First waste of 2012 today
- 1 apple that was beyond saving = 13p (The rest however are being salvaged in apple crumbles!)
- 1/2 lettuce I completely forgot to use up = 45p
- Part of a pepper that was just a bit too tough and wrinkly to do anything with = 24p
So, starting with 82p/£10
Hopefully the rest of the week will be a bit better...0 -
love these threads and the great advice and support people give. trying very hard to get into the frugal spirit as want to make some serious inroads to my debts this year. Food shopping and waste is a big bug bear for dh and me so looking at being more sensible and less wasteful.
Noticed you mentioned an ice cream tub for stock making - would you mind explaining what/how to save things that i caould use for stock making? i generally just use the carcass or bones with a carrot/onion/celery/bay(from tree in garden) and peppercorn which i just simmer for a while.
you mentioned peelings and i've seen others refer to this but not sure what/how to do. Thanks in advance:)
My boys & I are vegetarian, so meat carcasses etc are unknown territory for me ;-) but what I do with the veg trimmings is put the worst bits - any mouldy carrot tops, the very outside skin of onions, etc in the compost bin, & the rest gets stored till I've got ' enough' to make stock. The last couple of times I made it, I was storing the trimmings in a freezer bag at the bottom of the fridge, so I didn't keep anything from green veg as it goes yucky quicker, but Squeaky (I think) said about using an ice cream tub or similar to store them in the freezer till it's full, so this time I'll put everything in it - used lemon carcasses before & the ends of root ginger that are too small to grate without seriously endangering my fingers.
When I'm ready, I throw it all in my biggest saucepan with plenty of water & seasonings, bring up to the boil & simmer for a while... Actually, last time, I left it simmering for about an hour (oops!) So it was well reduced by the time I remembered it...
I strain it & put into good size tubs & freeze, sometimes I remember to measure it out so I can label the tub saying how much is there, sometimes I don't so have to defrost before I can measure it... Because all my discard stuff is veg matter, when it's cold, it goes in the compost - I wouldn't do that with meat though.
I've not started keeping fruit trimmings yet, but I've seen others suggesting keeping apple peel, cores etc & making fruit stock & other stuff from them. A lot of our fruit is eaten as packed lunches, & we do bring the cores home for the compost bin, but I don't fancy then doing much with brown cores that have been sitting in lunch boxes for half the day ;-) I guess I need to get another ice cream tub from mummy & start using that. Or buy some ice cream & eat it, what sacrifices we have to make lol ;-)
Hope that helps!0 -
I made some experimental no yeast bread yesterday - only to find that I couldn't get it into the oven... guess which muppet had completely forgotten about half a tray of roast potatoes! Call it 40p.
It's not really the waste itself that bothers me - it's the fact that roasties are a rare treat and I didn't get to eat themHi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
