Leftover milk is a bit of a problem for us. Can't buy it in any smaller quantity than a pint, I don't take milk in drinks (and often drink fruit tea anyway), and milk that's even the teeniest bit off makes me heave. We rarely eat puds other than fruit or yoghurt (both of us need to watch our weight), and can only eat one milk-based sauce a week, so at least some gets tipped down the sink. :(
Shouldn't be, when you think it's on the turn try making homemade paneer or yoghurt.

I'd like to join in with this, was going to be my challenge for 2011 but I didn't get very far as the year didn't go to plan & life got in the way.

I'm usually better if I have a thread to declare things on so I'm glad I've found this for this year.

Yesterday I went through both our freezers, fridge & cupboards, threw out some stuff that was really old/not labelled all ready to start with a new year. I have a list of what we have and so hopefully this will help me stay on track.
    Initial Mortgage January 2024 - £160,000
Initial Mortgage free date - January 2058
    Mortgage as of 1st February 2024 - £159,134.98
    Overpayments to date - £79.62
Current Mortgage free date - January 2058
  • Oops - sorting through the cupboards today and had to throw away a forgotten packet of rice cakes, along with half a box of icing sugar as it had mini bugs on the top. Very gross, and we can't really figure out where they came from. Here's hoping they will be the last things I throw away for the rest of the month!
  • Not doing too bad up to today - just thrown away 4 small party vol au vants and a mini springroll about 40p worth.
But need to have a proper check on fridge tomorrow and rescue food before it ends up in bin but as have little room in freezer to "save" food in there will have to be imaginative over next few days.

    Sprout cheesecake anyone?:o

I'm usually so careful about not binning but am having to throw this Big Pear Pie out. I bought it reduced to 99p last week thinking someone would eat it (lots of guests to cater for) - wrong! I don't eat processed foods and there's no way I'm touching it. 1st day of the month and 99p gone already....!
I couldn't bear to throw this out so took the pastry off and tried the filling, which was surprisingly good although still not really my thing. Will get through it slowly (a couple of spoonfuls at a time if I fancy something sweet), if it's still there when the binmen come at the end of the week I'll throw it out....estimated waste reduced to just 25p :D.

  • Still can't bring up the old thread! Maybe those who can still see it had subscribed to it (I hadn't!). Not to worry, onwards and upwards!

I need to join in :)

Im setting myself the challange of living out of the cupboards and freezer. I buy food each week and end up with the cupboards bursting. I need to use up what I have and start again.
  • Hi,

I tried joining before, but didn't get in to the swing of it. To be fair, I'm generally not terrible. But I did a clean out of the freezer just before new year and had to dump a whole aubergine! (Sacrilege, I love aubergine, but this could not be salvaged).

I'm aiming for less than 2 Euro a month, except peelings (No garden to compost/grow my own and given I don't buy Organic I prefer to peel most my veg)

Going to use this to force myself to use up odds and ends, especially end of loafs of bread (yes I know bread crumbs, etc...)
