  • A good day for me today - I cooked my vegetarian DD2 a dinner with a receipe I got off of here the other day, she couldn't eat it all but offered to put it in a tub and have it heated up again tomorrow night - good job I was sat down!!!

From DD2's veggie receipe there will be enough left over for me and DD1 tomorrow evening with some lovely garlic bread - DH will have something else (he likes his meat and wouldn't settle for anything veggie).

Half a load of bread was threatening to go off so DH made that into a bread and butter pudding (after picking off the mouldy bits - lol), we have enough for pudding tonight, tomorrow and Thursday....nomnomnom.

Now all I have left are the top and bottom slices of the bread loaf (no-one eats these), does anyone have any idea what I can do with these?

I've never thought of doing that, which is odd given that my mum does it. Good idea, though. will have to look out some suitable containers. :)

Freeze it in an ice cube tray, that way you can pop them into a bag to store them and they are ready portioned for when you do use it.

Leftover milk is a bit of a problem for us. Can't buy it in any smaller quantity than a pint, I don't take milk in drinks (and often drink fruit tea anyway), and milk that's even the teeniest bit off makes me heave. We rarely eat puds other than fruit or yoghurt (both of us need to watch our weight), and can only eat one milk-based sauce a week, so at least some gets tipped down the sink. :(

Why don't you make your own yoghurt? When I'm in the mood, I bring milk up to the boil, about a pint (that's what fits in my flask), I stir in a desert spoon of my last lot of yoghurt (needs to be natural). I wait for the mixture to cool down a bit (say a bit warmer than body temperature is what I aim for). Pop it in to a flask that I've pre heated with hot water. Leave the mixture over night. Wake up to new yoghurt - I'll then sweeten up portions of this with fruit - raw or stewed, etc..

Hey SpikeyHedgehog, good to see you back this month.

Am sure you will be get another good result this month. If I had your fresh bread I'd cut into dice and fry/bake to form chunky croutons for soups or salads... nom!

You could also do a lovely bread and butter pudding with that - so long as you have custard/stuff to make custard.

Thank you, it's good to be back ;-) !

I have done both your suggestions as I decided the carrot loaf was smelling dodgy too. So I diced the ordinary bread, sprinkled herbs & salt & oil on it, mixed well & baked for about 18 minutes while cooking more bread - yummy! Stashed in a freezer bag from mummy & put in the freezer so I don't eat it all... The carrot & raisin loaf is sliced & buttered & soaking in sweetened spiced milk in the fridge & I'll bake that tomorow... Used up the last of the milk from work doing that too.

Made vegetable pasta medley for dinner: pasta, sauteed onion, carrot & sprouts, sprinkled cheese on top. Boys ate it all, so that's good.

Does anyone know if you can freeze broccoli and stilton soup?

  • Hello Everyone,

Please can I join this thread too? We try very hard not to throw food away but there always seems to be something we forget. For instance....at the moment there is a lonely, sorry looking olive in a packet in the fridge....:o.

I think I'll put in the tuna pasta bake later along with a slightly dodgy tomato....see inspired already!!:rotfl:

    Have a lovely day.

  • Bottom of the fridge surprise for tea. Mantra: grate cheese on it, and it will be fine. :rotfl:
  • Quick question - I use bread from the freezer as we never eat a loaf before it goes moldy. I've just thawed out the crusts and made them into breadcrumbs, and I've refrozen them. Will they be okay, even though they were frozen twice?
  • Reporting 20p thrown out since I've had to chuck half an onion and a rather small portion of HM soup.

I can't find the old thread either - suspect it's deleted since my info shows that I've been thanked in more posts than I've apparently made, so posts must have been deleted somewhere. Hope it hasn't, there was useful info in there.

  • In the end OH and I have had brie and cranberry toasted sandwiches with broc/cauli/blue cheese soup. Thanks for the advice re freezing the soup squeaky. I also have four portions of the soup to go into the freezer to use as my work lunches. So that is all of the leftover brie, cranberry, cauli, broc and cream used up.

Have meal planne dthis week and most of next week is done as well. Hoping that this will cut down on wastage as well. I am trying to meal plan around what is in the freezer/fridge/store cupboards this month using ideas from the Goodfood magazine. OH used our tesco vouchers to get me a years subscription as part of my birthday gift.

Have washed the large drawer from the bottom of the fridge as it has what looked like beetroot juice in it! Found half of a mouldy cucumber in it so make that bout 40p of waste :(.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.
